New Installation Method for Subsea Pipelines in South China Sea

The subsea pipelines between two platforms located in South China Sea were required to be replaced. In between the two platforms is a Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) unit including the mooring system, anchors and Pipeline End Termination (PLET). The new pipelines need to run below the FPSO and the mooring lines. This paper discusses a new installation method for the subsea pipelines in South China Sea. There are technical challenges to install the new 18-km pipelines in Panyu oil field. On the one hand, it needs to ensure a 500-m radius safety zone from the FPSO. The pipeline laying vessel shall not work within the safety zone due to possible interference with anchor lines. On the other hand, the new pipelines have to run below the FPSO and the mooring lines in order to avoid potential interference with existing cable and riser system. This paper considers the existing pipeline installation methods and generates a new method to install the pipelines in South China Sea. A concept of ‘dummy pipe’ is introduced to simulate the installation operation. The paper presents a series of installation sequences including assisting the pipeline laying and pulling, accurately positioning the pipelines, and protecting the existing facility. Figures are used to illustrate the installation deployment. Messenger lines were installed to run below the FPSO. The installation process was monitored. The new pipelines were installed in the field successfully. In addition, this paper further presents some recommendation for future installation practice.

ABSTRACT We detected and characterized two distinct scuticociliate ciliates inside Acropora corals in the South China Sea. One, voraciously foraging on Symbiodinium, resembled the brown band disease of ciliates. The other, which is closely related to Paranophrys magna, grazed on detritus instead of Symbiodinium. These two ciliates may serve contrasting functions (competitor versus “cleaner”) in the coral-ciliate-Symbiodinium triangular relationship.

This chapter (and the next) look at the US’s recent intervention in the South China Sea and China’s responses. It considers the varying domestic and strategic concerns of these primarily island countries. It analyses the drivers of their responses to the sovereignty disputes in the Sea and to the key US initiative of the TPP. This chapter and the next are linked to the one that follows on Vietnam, which also plays a critical role in the shifting relation of forces in the South China Sea disputes. This is the region where the US has invested most hopes in a dramatic shift in regional alignments against China. These chapters assess the US’s progress, and conclude that – despite its lack of a local ally with anything like the weight of Japan or South Korea and the immense geographic extension of American power involved in maintaining its presence in the region – in some respects the US ’rebalance’ strategies have made more progress here to China’s south than to its east.

Abstract There are many studies on the history of the islands in the South China Sea. The present article looks at the references to these islands in one source, Huang Zhong’s 黄衷 Hai yu 海語 (preface 1536). This mainly concerns two entries in that work. One entry bears the title Wanli shitang 萬里石塘, the other is called Wanli changsha 萬里長沙. The article presents English translations of these entries together with detailed comments. These comments are necessary because both entries contain several terms and passages that are difficult to understand. The comments investigate questions related to the geography and other phenoma of this area. This involves citations from contemporary sources as well as from some earlier and later works. In that sense the article may classify as a long philological note, or a collection of glosses, on a particular aspect described in one important mid-Ming text.

A new concept Spar FPSO (Floating Production Storage and Offloading) is proposed for South China Sea deepwater oil field development integrating the advantages of the deep-draft Spar concept whose excellent stability and global performance enables dry-tree drilling and production, and the conventional ship-shaped FPSO for oil storage and offloading. This paper presents a study of the tandem offloading system for the new concept Spar FPSO. The paper will first give an overview of various offloading configurations and their characteristics for deepwater development; then a tandem offloading system similar to conventional ship-shaped FPSO is recommended for further investigation considering operational experience, safety and economical benefits. As the offloading operations are generally weather-limited, offloading environmental conditions for the study are selected based on API, ABS and South China Sea offshore operation practices. For a case study, hydrodynamic performance of the Spar FPSO in tandem offloading configuration with a shuttle tanker in 1500m water depth was investigated numerically and experimentally. Numerical simulations were conducted by means of fully coupled nonlinear time-domain analysis. The distance between the shuttle tanker and the Spar FPSO is optimized based on the relative motions of the two floaters and the hawser tension requirement of the shuttle tanker. Experimental results from model test are presented and compared with analytical time-domain simulation results. It is shown that the results of numerical simulations are consistent with the model test. The tandem offloading system demonstrates robust performance and cost-effectiveness for the proposed Spar FPSO concept.
