Reliability Assessment of TLP Air-Gap in Nonlinear Waves

The present study demonstrates effects of the CresT JIP (Cooperative Research on Extreme Seas and their impacT) findings regarding extreme and rogue waves through a simplified structure reliability analysis of a generic TLP structure defined by the project. The study demonstrates effects of wave nonlinearity beyond the second order, diffraction-radiation of incoming waves with the structure, spatial variations of crest statistics, a vertical displacement of the TLP system at the deck location as well as sea water level variations due to surge and tide. In order to account for these effects a stochastic model is suggested. Sensitivity studies are carried out to identify importance of analysed parameters and their stochastic behaviour to the failure probability. Uncertainties related to the analysis are identified and ranked given special attention to the effect of wave nonlinearities beyond the 2nd order. Recommendations for future research needs are suggested.

Non-linear effects caused by extreme crest loading might be governing for important structural limit states. For TLP’s, non-linear effects caused by extreme crest might lead to tether overload and tether slack. Simple scaling of ULS results is not necessarily adequate if wave in deck events (or other NL phenomena) might occur with annual probability >10−4. In this case ALS analysis should be performed, and detailed knowledge of the physics and statistics of extreme crest events, and of the loading caused by these waves, is required. Ignoring the possibility for wave in deck events and establishing the characteristic tension from data where there are no wave in deck events, might lead to unrealistic low estimates for the extreme tether tension. The present study demonstrates effects of the CresT JIP (Cooperative Research on Extreme Seas and their impacT) findings regarding extreme and rogue waves through a simplified reliability analysis of a generic TLP defined by the project. In this paper, SRA for tether overload is discussed, with emphasize on the effect of tension Twid caused by wave in deck events. Data from TLP basin test undertaken as part of the CresT JIP are applied, and parametric models for tether tension from measured crests and measured tether tension data are established. The model for Twid is used in the SRA for analysis of tether overloads for design sea states and for long term analysis for different geographic locations. Special attention is given to assessment of the effect of higher order crest non-linearities beyond 2nd order. The crest models are based on results from other work packages of the Crest JIP. Recommendations for future research needs are given.

Abstract. This research redefined the job demands–resources (JD-R) job crafting model ( Tims & Bakker, 2010 ) to resolve theoretical and empirical inconsistencies regarding the crafting of job demands and developed a German version of the Job Crafting Scale (JCS; Tims, Bakker, & Derks, 2012 ) in two separate studies (total N = 512). In Study 1 the German version of the JCS was developed and tested for its factor structure, reliability, and construct validity. Study 2 dealt with the validity of our redefined JD-R job crafting model. The results show that, like the original version, the German version comprises four job crafting types, and the German version of the JCS is a valid and reliable generic measure that can be used for future research with German-speaking samples. Evidence for the redefined JD-R job crafting model was based on findings relating job crafting to work engagement and emotional exhaustion.

In this article, we study the psychometric properties of a short scale (TRANS-18) which was designed to detect safe behaviors (personal and vehicle-related) and psychophysiological disorders. 244 drivers participated in the study, including drivers of freight transport vehicles (regular, dangerous and special), cranes, and passenger transport (regular transport and chartered coaches), ambulances and taxis. After carrying out an exploratory factor analysis of the scale, the findings show a structure comprised of three factors related to psychophysiological disorders, and to both personal and vehicle-related safety behaviors. Furthermore, these three factors had adequate reliability and all three also showed validity with regard to burnout, fatigue and job tension. In short, this scale may be ideally suited for adequately identifying the safety behaviors and safety problems of transport drivers. Future research could use the TRANS-18 as a screening tool in combination with other instruments.

This paper presents a computational study on a new method of detecting multiple simultaneous damages in a cable-stayed bridge by use of the analysis of the vertical dynamic response of a vehicle passing the bridge. First, the study uses a finite-element method to simulate the vehicle cable-stayed bridge system. Then, the vertical vibration interaction between the bridge and the vehicle is solved by a time-step integration scheme. In this research, we consider that two kinds of damage including cable tension loss and deck damage may occur simultaneously at different locations. The differences between the vertical displacement responses of a vehicle passing the damaged bridge and the healthy bridge are sampled and called the relative displacement response vector of the vehicle. The proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) is utilized to decompose the relative displacement response vector of the vehicle passing the bridge with unknown multiple damages into an optimal set of basis vectors formed from the ones of the vehicle moving over the known damaged bridges. The associated system parameters variation with the unknown multiple damages can be reconstructed further. Discussions are given concerning the feasibility and limitation of the proposed detection technique as well as directions for future research.

Abstract. The cycling of inorganic bromine in the marine boundary layer (mbl) has received increased attention in recent years. Bromide, a constituent of sea water, is injected into the atmosphere in association with sea-salt aerosol by breaking waves on the ocean surface. Measurements reveal that supermicrometer sea-salt aerosol is depleted in bromine by about 50% relative to conservative tracers, whereas marine submicrometer aerosol is often enriched in bromine. Model calculations, laboratory studies, and field observations strongly suggest that these depletions reflect the chemical transformation of particulate bromide to reactive inorganic gases that influence the processing of ozone and other important constituents of marine air. However, currently available techniques cannot reliably quantify many \\chem{Br}-containing compounds at ambient concentrations and, consequently, our understanding of inorganic Br cycling over the oceans and its global significance are uncertain. To provide a more coherent framework for future research, we have reviewed measurements in marine aerosol, the gas phase, and in rain. We also summarize sources and sinks, as well as model and laboratory studies of chemical transformations. The focus is on inorganic bromine over the open oceans, excluding the polar regions. The generation of sea-salt aerosol at the ocean surface is the major tropospheric source producing about 6.2 Tg/a of bromide. The transport of  Br from continents (as mineral aerosol, and as products from biomass-burning and fossil-fuel combustion) can be of local importance. Transport of degradation products of long-lived Br-containing compounds from the stratosphere and other sources contribute lesser amounts. Available evidence suggests that, following aerosol acidification, sea-salt bromide reacts to form Br2 and BrCl that volatilize to the gas phase and photolyze in daylight to produce atomic Br and Cl. Subsequent transformations can destroy tropospheric ozone, oxidize dimethylsulfide (DMS) and hydrocarbons in the gas phase and S(IV) in aerosol solutions, and thereby potentially influence climate. The diurnal cycle of gas-phase \\Br and the corresponding particulate Br deficits are correlated. Higher values of Br in the gas phase during daytime are consistent with expectations based on photochemistry. Mechanisms that explain the widely reported accumulation of particulate Br in submicrometer aerosols are not yet understood. We expect that the importance of inorganic Br cycling will vary in the future as a function of both increasing acidification of the atmosphere (through anthropogenic emissions) and climate changes. The latter affects bromine cycling via meteorological factors including global wind fields (and the associated production of sea-salt aerosol), temperature, and relative humidity.

The concept of emotional creativity is based on a social constructivist theory of emotion and refers to an individual’s ability to experience and express novel, sincere, and effective mixtures of emotions. The present research examines the psychometric properties of the Georgian version of Emotional Creativity Inventory (G-ECI; Averill, 1999). 834 individuals across five studies completed the G-ECI. Results from exploratory factor analysis indicate that the factor structure of the original ECI broadly replicates in the Georgian translation. The Cronbach’s alpha reliabilities of the G-ECI scales are mostly acceptable. There are significant gender differences. Examining the construct validity of G-ECI with other constructs (namely, with emotional intelligence, creativity and flow) showed the expected relationships. In conclusion, the Georgian version of the emotional creativity inventory seems well suited for future research purposes. Commercialisation activities require knowledge sharing between groups such as researchers and commercial managers. The existence of research based Knowledge-stewarding Communities of Practice (CoPs) within industry/research/government innovation collaborations has important implications for innovation management practice. The context of the study is four Australian Cooperative Research Centres (CRCs) composed of academic, government and industry personnel. Semi-structured interviews with a total of twenty scientists, engineers and managers explored collectively shared and dissimilar perceptions of time in commercialisation activities. Knowledge-stewarding CoP members and commercial participants in triple helix organisations working to commercialise inventions report differing temporal perceptions. Commercial and research groups described distinctively different views of pace and flexibility, contributing to tension, distrust and negatively influencing knowledge sharing, communication and commercialisation outcomes. Management techniques in use in the four CRCs and an agenda for future research conclude the chapter. This chapter contributes to the literature on collaborative innovation management and inter-organisational CoPs.

Purpose – This study aims to propose a new construct – prodigality and develop a measurement scale to support the construct. Design/methodology/approach – Combining the paradigms of Churchill, Malhotra and Birks, the item generation and content validity yielded the development of a modified scale. Three main steps in assessment of the scale: dimensional structure, reliability and validity led to the development of a prodigality scale. A total of 32 items were generated, through assessing Qur’anic verses that are related to Muslim consumption patterns linked to in Islam. Findings – In total, 23 items remained after content validity. A pre-test using exploratory factor analysis on the 23-item scale created a two-factor scale. According to extracted validity and reliability scores, prodigality scale was statistically supported. A pool of nine items is proposed for the eventual measurement of the prodigality. Research limitations/implications – The proposed measurement scale warrants further exploratory study. Future research should assess the validity across different Muslim geographies and Islamic schools of thought and practice. Originality/value – Prodigality is proposed as a new construct that focuses primarily on the Qur’an and seeks to achieve relevance and acceptance by both Sunni and Shia denominations. The measurement scale is believed to extend the existing body of literature and contribute new knowledge on Muslim consumption.

Earthquake cause ground deformation in sedimented surface areas like Pasni and that is a hazard. Such earthquake induced ground displacements can seriously damage building structures. On 7 February 2017, an earthquake with 6.3 magnitudes strike near to Pasni. We have successfully distinguished widely spread ground displacements for the Pasni earthquake by using InSAR-based analysis with Sentinel-1 satellite C-band data. The maps of surface displacement field resulting from the earthquake are generated. Sentinel-1 Wide Swath data acquired from 9 December 2016 to 28 February 2017 was used to generate displacement map. The interferogram revealed the area of deformation. The comparison map of interferometric vertical displacement in different time period was treated as an evidence of deformation caused by earthquake. Profile graphs of interferogram were created to estimate the vertical displacement range and trend. Pasni lies in strong earthquake magnitude effected area. The major surface deformation areas are divided into different zones based on significance of deformation. The average displacement in Pasni is estimated about 250 mm. Maximum pasni area is uplifted by earthquake and maximum uplifting occurs was about 1200 mm. Some of areas was subsidized like the areas near to shoreline and maximum subsidence was estimated about 1500 mm. Pasni is facing many problems due to increasing sea water intrusion under prevailing climatic change where land deformation due to a strong earthquake can augment its vulnerability.

Abstract Extreme events, such as rogue waves, earthquakes, and stock market crashes, occur spontaneously in many dynamical systems. Because of their usually adverse consequences, quantification, prediction, and mitigation of extreme events are highly desirable. Here, we review several aspects of extreme events in phenomena described by high-dimensional, chaotic dynamical systems. We especially focus on two pressing aspects of the problem: (i) mechanisms underlying the formation of extreme events and (ii) real-time prediction of extreme events. For each aspect, we explore methods relying on models, data, or both. We discuss the strengths and limitations of each approach as well as possible future research directions.
