Enhancement of High Damping VIV Through Roughness Distribution for Energy Harnessing at 8×103 < Re < 1.5×105

Vortex Induced Vibration (VIV) of a circular cylinder in a steady flow is enhanced using distributed surface roughness. VIV enhancement is needed in harnessing clean and renewable energy from ocean/river currents using the VIVACE (VIV for Aquatic Clean Energy) Converter (Bernitsas et al. 2006a, 2006b; Raghavan et al. 2007). High damping is mandatory in energy harnessing and higher Reynolds numbers are required to reach the high lift TrSL3 regime. Roughness is added to the surface of the cylinder in the form of sandpaper strips to achieve three goals: (1) Trip separation in a controlled manner. (2) Fully correlate the flow regardless of the Reynolds number regime. (3) Energize the boundary layer, thus inducing higher vorticity and circulation and consequently lift. Our experiments show that it is possible to achieve all three goals and reach VIV amplitudes of 2.1 to 2.7 diameters under high damping. The range of synchronization increased dramatically but its end was not observed within the capabilities of our experimental facility.

Boundary layer separation can lead to partial loss of lift and higher aerodynamic losses on low-pressure turbine airfoils at low Reynolds number in high bypass ratio engines. The combined effects of upstream wakes and surface roughness on boundary layer development have been investigated experimentally to improve the performance of ultra-high-lift low-pressure turbine (LPT) blades. The measurement was performed on a linear cascade with an ultra-high-lift aft-loaded LP turbine profile named IET-LPTA with Zweifel loading coefficient of about 1.37. The wakes were simulated by the moving cylindrical bars upstream of the cascade. The time-mean aerodynamic performance and the boundary layer behavior on suction surface had been measured with two 3-hole probes and a hot-wire probe. Three roughness heights ranging from 8.8–20.9μm combined with three roughness deposit positions ranging from 5.2%–39.5% suction surface length formed a large measurement matrix. The roughness with height of 8.8μm (1.05×10−4 chord length) covering 5.2% suction surface reduced the profile loss across the whole Reynolds number range. Under the effect of roughness associated with upstream wakes, the freestream turbulence intensity (FSTI) is responsible in part for the development of the wake-induced transition region, calmed region and natural transition region of the boundary layer. The transition length and the transition onset of the boundary layer were also affected by the FSTI.

Periodic wakes affect not only the surface boundary layer characteristics of low-pressure turbine blades and profile losses but also the vortex structures of the secondary flow and the corresponding losses. Thus, understanding the physical mechanisms of unsteady interactions and the potential to eliminate secondary losses is becoming increasingly important for improving the performance of high-lift low-pressure turbines. However, few studies have focused on the unsteady interaction mechanism between periodic wakes and endwall secondary flow in low-pressure turbines. This paper verified the accuracy of computational fluid dynamics by comparing experimental results and those of the numerical predictions by taking a high-lift low-pressure turbine cascade as the research object. Discussion was focused on the interaction mechanisms between the upstream wakes and secondary flow within the high-lift low-pressure turbine. The results indicated that upstream wakes have both positive and negative effects on the endwall flow, where the periodic wakes can decrease significantly the size of the separation bubble, prevent the formation of secondary vorticity structures at relatively high Reynolds numbers (100,000 and 150,000), and reduce the cross-passage pressure gradient of cascade. In addition, periodic wakes can improve the cascade incidence characteristic in terms of reducing the overturning and underturning of the secondary flow at downstream of the cascade all of which are beneficial for decreasing the endwall secondary losses, whereas more endwall boundary layer is involved in the main flow passage due to the wake transport, resulting in increased strength of the secondary flow at low Reynolds number of 25,000 and 50,000. Compared with the results without wakes, the total pressure loss for unsteady condition at the cascade exit decreases by 2.7% and 6.1% at high Reynolds number of 100,000 and 150,000, respectively. However, the secondary loss at unsteady flow conditions increases at low Reynolds number of 25,000 and 50,000.

The performance of the low pressure turbine (LPT) can vary appreciably, because this component operates under a wide range of Reynolds numbers. At higher Reynolds numbers, mid and aft loaded profiles have the advantage that transition of suction side boundary layer happens further downstream than at front loaded profiles, resulting in lower profile loss. At lower Reynolds numbers, aft loading of the blade can mean that if a suction side separation exists, it may remain open up to the trailing edge. This is especially the case when blade lift is increased via increased pitch to chord ratio. There is a trend in research towards exploring the effect of coupling boundary layer control with highly loaded turbine blades, in order to maximize performance over the full relevant Reynolds number range. In an earlier work, pulsed blowing with fluidic oscillators was shown to be effective in reducing the extent of the separated flow region and to significantly decrease the profile losses caused by separation over a wide range of Reynolds numbers. These experiments were carried out in the High-Speed Cascade Wind Tunnel of the German Federal Armed Forces University Munich, Germany, which allows to capture the effects of pulsed blowing at engine relevant conditions. The assumed control mechanism was the triggering of boundary layer transition by excitation of the Tollmien-Schlichting waves. The current work aims to gain further insight into the effects of pulsed blowing. It investigates the effect of a highly efficient configuration of pulsed blowing at a frequency of 9.5 kHz on the boundary layer at a Reynolds number of 70000 and exit Mach number of 0.6. The boundary layer profiles were measured at five positions between peak Mach number and the trailing edge with hot wire anemometry and pneumatic probes. Experiments were conducted with and without actuation under steady as well as periodically unsteady inflow conditions. The results show the development of the boundary layer and its interaction with incoming wakes. It is shown that pulsed blowing accelerates transition over the separation bubble and drastically reduces the boundary layer thickness.

Computations of two-dimensional solutions of the Navier–Stokes equations are carried out for finite-amplitude waves on steady unidirectional flow. Several cases are considered. The numerical method employs pseudospectral techniques in the streamwise direction and finite differences on a stretched grid in the transverse direction, with matching to asymptotic solutions when unbounded. Earlier results for Poiseuille flow in a channel are re-obtained, except that attention is drawn to the dependence of the minimum Reynolds number on the physical constraint of constant flux or constant pressure gradient. Attempts to calculate waves in Couette flow by continuation in the velocity of a channel wall fail. The asymptotic suction boundary layer is shown to possess finite-amplitude waves at Reynolds numbers orders of magnitude less than the critical Reynolds number for linear instability. Waves in the Blasius boundary layer and unsteady Rayleigh profile are calculated by employing the artifice of adding a body force to cancel the spatial or temporal growth. The results are verified by comparison with perturbation analysis in the vicinity of the linear-instability critical Reynolds numbers.

The results of flow experiments performed in a cylinder array designed to mimic a VHTR Nuclear Plant lower plenum design are presented. Pressure drop and velocity field measurements were made. Based on these measurements, five regimes of behavior are identified that are found to depend on Reynolds number. It is found that the recirculation region behind the cylinders is shorter than that of half cylinders placed on the wall representing the symmetry plane. Unlike a single cylinder, the separation point is found to always be on the rear of the cylinders, even at very low Reynolds number. Boundary layer transition is found to occur at much lower Reynolds numbers than previously reported.

A simple analytical model for two-dimensional mean flow at very large Reynolds numbers around a circular cylinder with distributed roughness is presented and the results of the theory are compared with experiment. The theory uses the wake-source potential-flow model of Parkinson and Jandali together with an extension to the case of rough-walled circular cylinders of the Stratford-Townsend theory for turbulent boundary-layer separation. In addition, a semi-empirical relation between the base-pressure coefficient and the location of separation is used. Calculation of the boundary-layer development, needed as part of the theory, is accomplished using an integral method, taking into account the influence of surface roughness on the laminar boundary layer and transition as well as on the turbulent boundary layer. Good agreement with experiment is shown by the results of the theory. The significant effects of surface roughness on the mean-pressure distribution on a circular cylinder at large Reynolds numbers and the physical mechanisms giving rise to these effects are demonstrated by the model.

Abstract This paper presents an experimental investigation on nitrogen and helium flow through microchannels etched in silicon with hydraulic diameters between 10 and 40 microns, and Reynolds numbers ranging from 0.3 to 600. The objectives of this research are (1) to fabricate microchannels with uniform surface roughness and local pressure measurement; (2) to determine the friction factor within the locally fully developed region of the microchannel; and (3) to evaluate the effect of surface roughness on momentum transfer by comparison with smooth microchannels. The friction factor results are presented as the product of friction factor and Reynolds number plotted against Reynolds number. The following conclusions have been reached in the present investigation: (1) microchannels with uniform corrugated surfaces can be fabricated using standard photolithographic processes; and (2) surface features with low aspect ratios of height to width have little effect on the friction factor for laminar flow in microchannels.

The blow-down type of intermittent, supersonic tunnel is attractive because of its simplicity and because relatively high Reynolds numbers can be obtained for a given size of test section. An adverse characteristic, however, is the fall of stagnation temperature during runs, which can affect experiments in several ways. The Reynolds number varies and the absolute velocity is not constant, even if the Mach number and pressure are; heat-transfer cannot be studied under controlled conditions and the experimental errors arising from the effect of heat-transfer on the boundary layer vary in time. These effects can become significant in quantitative experiments if the tunnel is large and the variation of temperature very rapid; the expense required to eliminate them might then be justified.

Urban-type rough-wall boundary layers developing over staggered cube arrays with plan area packing density, $\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}_{p}$, of 6.25 %, 25 % or 44.4 % have been studied at two Reynolds numbers within a wind tunnel using hot-wire anemometry (HWA). A fixed HWA probe is used to capture the outer-layer flow while a second moving probe is used to capture the inner-layer flow at 13 wall-normal positions between $1.25h$ and $4h$ where $h$ is the height of the roughness elements. The synchronized two-point HWA measurements are used to extract the near-canopy large-scale signal using spectral linear stochastic estimation and a predictive model is calibrated in each of the six measurement configurations. Analysis of the predictive model coefficients demonstrates that the canopy geometry has a significant influence on both the superposition and amplitude modulation. The universal signal, the signal that exists in the absence of any large-scale influence, is also modified as a result of local canopy geometry suggesting that although the nonlinear interactions within urban-type rough-wall boundary layers can be modelled using the predictive model as proposed by Mathis et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 681, 2011, pp. 537–566), the model must be however calibrated for each type of canopy flow regime. The Reynolds number does not significantly affect any of the model coefficients, at least over the limited range of Reynolds numbers studied here. Finally, the predictive model is validated using a prediction of the near-canopy signal at a higher Reynolds number and a prediction using reference signals measured in different canopy geometries to run the model. Statistics up to the fourth order and spectra are accurately reproduced demonstrating the capability of the predictive model in an urban-type rough-wall boundary layer.
