Analysis of the Influence of Mechanical Properties on the Residual Stress in Offshore Chain Links Using the Finite Element Method

Production offshore units have a relative long operational life (about 20 years), during which are submitted to the ocean adverse environment loading produced by the combination of wind, waves and currents. This complex loading history can promote the nucleation and propagation of cracks in mooring line components. The presence of defects establishes a critical situation that can lead to catastrophic failures. In spite of residual stress plays a preponderant part in the structural integrity of a mechanical component, the presence of residual stress is not considered in traditional design of these mechanical components. Therefore, is fundamental to develop new and more precise methodologies for assessing the structural integrity of mooring components. The present contribution regards on modeling and simulation of the residual stress distributions in studless chain links using a tri-dimensional elastoplastic finite element model with large displacements. In the analysis three material conditions, associated with different mechanical properties, were considered. The results indicate that the presence of residual stresses modify significantly the stress distribution in the component. Also, residual stress distribution depends on the mechanical properties of the chain link material. The structural integrity of the mechanical component was studied using the concept of critical volume associated to the material volume susceptible to a certain critical crack size. This methodology permits the evaluation of the critical crack length distribution related to brittle fracture of the component.

This article presents the results of experimental research on the mechanical properties of pine wood (Pinus L. Sp. Pl. 1000. 1753). In the course of the research process, stress-strain curves were determined for cases of tensile, compression and shear of standardized shapes samples. The collected data set was used to determine several material constants such as: modulus of elasticity, shear modulus or yield point. The aim of the research was to determine the material properties necessary to develop the model used in the finite element analysis (FEM), which demonstrates the symmetrical nature of the stress distribution in the sample. This model will be used to analyze the process of grinding wood base materials in terms of the peak cutting force estimation and the tool geometry influence determination. The main purpose of the developed model will be to determine the maximum stress value necessary to estimate the destructive force for the tested wood sample. The tests were carried out for timber of around 8.74% and 19.9% moisture content (MC). Significant differences were found between the mechanical properties of wood depending on moisture content and the direction of the applied force depending on the arrangement of wood fibers. Unlike other studies in the literature, this one relates to all three stress states (tensile, compression and shear) in all significant directions (anatomical). To verify the usability of the determined mechanical parameters of wood, all three strength tests (tensile, compression and shear) were mapped in the FEM analysis. The accuracy of the model in determining the maximum destructive force of the material is equal to the average 8% (for tensile testing 14%, compression 2.5%, shear 6.5%), while the average coverage of the FEM characteristic with the results of the strength test in the field of elastic-plastic deformations with the adopted ±15% error overlap on average by about 77%. The analyses were performed in the ABAQUS/Standard 2020 program in the field of elastic-plastic deformations. Research with the use of numerical models after extension with a damage model will enable the design of energy-saving and durable grinding machines.

Dissimilar metal welded joints (DMWJs) possess significant localized mechanical heterogeneity. Using finite element software ABAQUS with the User-defined Material (UMAT) subroutine, this study proposed a constitutive equation that may be used to express the heterogeneous mechanical properties of the heat-affected and fusion zones at the interfaces in DMWJs. By eliminating sudden stress changes at the material interfaces, the proposed approach provides a more realistic and accurate characterization of the mechanical heterogeneity in the local regions of DMWJs than existing methods. As such, the proposed approach enables the structural integrity of DMWJs to be analyzed in greater detail.

The welding H-section beam has good mechanical properties with its superior structure. So they become the main components of steel structure and have been widely used. In this paper, the welded H-section beam is used as the research object. The finite element simulation model is established. The heat source parameters are determined. The deformation of the steel due to the welding process is studied. The results show that the bottom plate and the bottom plate inward bending is about 2.32mm cause by welding process. The residual stress can reach 400MPa.

Gyroscope is the core of an inertia system and made by machining process. Machining process imports large residual stress. The residual stress will be released and induces large deformation of gyroscope frame. In this paper, the effects of residual stress on deformation of gyroscope frame were simulated by finite element method. Different stress distribution leads different deformation. Compressive stress can make sample long and tensile stress make sample short. The stress released in deformation process which reduced about 90%.

In this article, a 3D finite element based thermo-mechanical model for friction stir welding (FSW) of a marine-grade aluminium alloy 5083 is proposed. The model demonstrates the thermal evaluation and the distribution of residual stresses and strains under the variation of process variables. The temperature profile of the weld joint during the FSW process and the mechanical properties of the joints are also experimentally evaluated. The necessary calibration of the model for the correct implementation of the thermal loading, mechanical loading, and boundary conditions was performed using the experimental results. The model simulation and experimental results are analyses in view of the process-property correlation study. The residual stress was evaluated along, and across the weld, centreline referred as longitudinal and transverse residual stresses, respectively. The magnitude of longitudinal residual stress is noted 60-80% higher than that of the transverse direction. The longitudinal residual stress generated a tensile oval shaped stress region around the tool shoulder confined to a maximum distance of about 25mm from the axis of the tool along the weld line. It encompasses the weld-nugget to thermo-mechanically affected zone (TMAZ), while the parent metal region is mostly experiences the compressive residual stresses. However, the transverse residual stress region appears like wing shaped region spread out in both the advancing and retreating side of the weld and occupying approximately double the area as compared to the longitudinal residual stresses. Overall, the study revealed a corelation between the FSW process variables such as welding speed and the tool rotational speed with the residual stress and the mechanical properties of the joint.

AbstractNeutron diffraction was used to measure the residual stress distribution in an FeAl weld overlay on steel. It was found that the residual stresses accumulated during welding were essentially removed by the post-weld heat treatment that was applied to the specimen; most residual stresses in the specimen developed during cooling following the post-weld heat treatment. The experimental data were compared with a plasto-elastic finite element analysis. While some disagreement exists in absolute strain values, there is satisfactory agreement in strain spatial distribution between the experimental data and the finite element analysis.

In this study a probabilistic Leak-Before-Break (LBB) analysis was carried out based on the R6 FAD Option 1 assessment method. The method uses the material fracture toughness and yield stress in order to determine, deterministically, a Critical Crack Length (CCL) and a Leakage Rate (LR) through a crack. In order to define the fracture toughness of the material, the Master Curve approach was used accordingly to BS7910:2013 Annex J. Initially, deterministic analyses were carried out and the fracture toughness and yield stress were set to 190 MPa√m and 158 MPa, respectively. In order to implement a probabilistic approach, the yield stress and fracture toughness were introduced as stochastic parameter. The Fracture toughness was generated using a Weibull distribution to match the Master Curve. The distribution was built such that 190 MPa√m represents the 5% probability fracture toughness. The Yield stress (0.2% proof strength) was generated using a normal distribution with standard deviation 10.35 MPa such that the average value was 175 MPa and the lower bound (5% of probability of occurrence) was 158 MPa. The choice of building the distribution as above mentioned was justified by the fact that in structural integrity assessment the lower 5% is generally used for material parameters. Thus, once a Detectable Leakage Rate (DLR) was determined, it was possible to assign an implicit probability of failure to the deterministic case. The calculations were then extended by using several LR formulas. The calculations were carried out making use of the probabilistic software RAP++ coupled to MATLAB. The probabilities of failure were calculated with regard to a postulated DLR and a DLRSF corrected with a safety factor of 10. The probabilities of failure for the DLRSF were proved to be 9 to 15 times higher than for the postulated DLR case, which leads to the opportunity of conservatism reduction.
