Dynamics of Towed Cables With Active Controls

The transverse dynamics of a towed cable was studied both experimentally and analytically. Forced oscillation was applied on the upstream end of a cable towed in its longitudinal direction, while transverse motion in the downstream end was restricted by springs. Reynolds numbers based on length were in the 6.5 − 32.5 × 106 range and cable length to diameter ratio was 1180. The amplitude of the forced motion was 4.55 diameters. The transverse response was measured at two locations and compared to results from computer simulation, showing that the model known as the Paidoussis equation overpredicted the response by a factor of two around resonance. Modification of force coefficients with respect to a modified KC number improved the results, but important trends were not captured. Curve fitting the cross flow drag coefficient to experimental data gave a result 3.3 times the drag coefficient past a cylinder in supercritical flow. The discrepancies are believed to be caused by forward speed effect on the formation of vortices and the transient behavior of the wake, but the physics of this is not clear.

An aerodynamic investigation was conducted to determine the laminar-flow drag coefficient of spheres of various sizes in a subsonic wind tunnel. The tests were conducted using the M.I.T.-N.A.S.A. prototype magnetic-balance system. By measuring the drag of different sized spheres without model support interference the tunnel wall effect can be deduced. The present results indicate that the classical wind tunnel correction does not completely account for the effects of model size and wall interference. That is, the corrected drag coefficient data for the different sphere sizes differ among themselves in the region of Reynolds number overlap.A comparison of the present sphere drag results with those of numerous other investigations including free-flight and ballistic-range data is given. The drag coefficients presented here are slightly lower than those of other workers for Reynolds numbers ranging from 20 000 to 150 000, but fall between the limits of experimental scatter for Reynolds numbers from 150 000 to 260 000.An analysis of the estimated error in the present data indicates the primary source to be measurement of the wind tunnel parameters rather than errors resulting from the balance system.

This paper deals with wave forces on a single cylinder. The wave forces are simulated in a laboratory by oscillating a cylinder sinusoidally in water otherwise at rest. This effort is a parametric study relating a force coefficient to such variables as instantaneous Reynolds number, period parameter, and d/νT. The force is not decomposed into drag and inertia components, but is represented as a continuous function of the previously mentioned parameters. The idea is to determine how the acceleration affects the force. Considerable deviation from a Reynolds-number only dependence is noted for low Reynolds numbers. The steady-flow drag coefficient value is asymptotically obtained for large Reynolds numbers.

Experimental investigations of wind turbine blades having NACA airfoils 0021 and 4412 with and without tubercles on the leading edge have been performed in a wind tunnel. It was found that the lift coefficient of the airfoil 0021 with tubercles was higher at Re = 1.2×105 and 1.69×105 in post critical region (at higher angle of attach) than airfoils without tubercles but this difference relatively diminished at higher Reynolds numbers and beyond indicating that there is no effect on the lift coefficients of airfoils with tubercles at higher Reynolds numbers whereas drag coefficient remains unchanged. It is noted that at Re = 1.69×105, the lift coefficient of airfoil without tubercles drops from 0.96 to 0.42 as the angle of attack increases from 15° to 20° which is about 56% and the corresponding values of lift coefficient for airfoil with tubercles are 0.86 and 0.7 at respective angles with18% drop.

SummaryA method is developed for calculating the profile drag of a yawed wing of infinite span, based on the assumption that the form of the spanwise distribution of velocity in the boundary layer, whether laminar or turbulent, is insensitive to the chordwise pressure distribution. The form is assumed to be the same as that accepted for the boundary layer on an unyawed plate with zero external pressure gradient. Experimental evidence indicates that these assumptions are reasonable in this context. The method is applied to a flat plate and the N.A.C.A. 64-012 section at zero incidence for a range of Reynolds numbers between 106 and 108, angles of yaw up to 45°, and a range of transition point positions. It is shown that the drag coefficients of a flat plate varies with yaw as cos½ Λ (where Λ is the angle of yaw) if the boundary layer is completely laminar, and it varies as if the boundary layer is completely turbulent. The drag coefficient of the N.A.C.A. 64-012 section, however, varies closely as cos½ Λ for transition point positions between 0 and 0.5 c. Further calculations on wing sections of other shapes and thicknesses and more detailed experimental checks of the basic assumptions at higher Reynolds numbers are desirable.

The fluid-structure energy transfer of a tensioned beam of length to diameter ratio 200, subject to vortex-induced vibrations in linear shear flow, is investigated by means of direct numerical simulation at three Reynolds numbers, from 110 to 1,100. In both the in-line and cross-flow directions, the high-wavenumber structural responses are characterized by mixed standing-traveling wave patterns. The spanwise zones where the flow provides energy to excite the structural vibrations are located mainly within the region of high current where the lock-in condition is established, i.e. where vortex shedding and cross-flow vibration frequencies coincide. However, the energy input is not uniform across the entire lock-in region. This can be related to observed changes from counterclockwise to clockwise structural orbits. The energy transfer is also impacted by the possible occurrence of multi-frequency vibrations.

Numerical investigations have been performed for the flow past square-section cylinders with a spanwise geometric deformation leading to a stagnation face with a sinusoidal waviness. The computations were performed using a spectral/hp element solver over a range of Reynolds numbers from 10 to 150.Starting from fully developed shedding past a straight cylinder at a Reynolds number of 100, a sufficiently high waviness is impulsively introduced resulting in the stabilization of the near wake to a time-independent state. It is shown that the spanwise waviness sets up a cross-flow within the growing boundary layer on the leading-edge surface thereby generating streamwise and vertical components of vorticity. These additional components of vorticity appear in regions close to the inflection points of the wavy stagnation face where the spanwise vorticity is weakened. This redistribution of vorticity leads to the breakdown of the unsteady and staggered Kármán vortex wake into a steady and symmetric near-wake structure. The steady nature of the near wake is associated with a reduction in total drag of about 16% at a Reynolds number of 100 compared with the straight, non-wavy cylinder.Further increases in the amplitude of the waviness lead to the emergence of hairpin vortices from the near-wake region. This wake topology has similarities to the wake of a sphere at low Reynolds numbers. The physical structure of the wake due to the variation of the amplitude of the waviness is identified with five distinct regimes. Furthermore, the introduction of a waviness at a wavelength close to the mode A wavelength and the primary wavelength of the straight square-section cylinder leads to the suppression of the Kármán street at a minimal waviness amplitude.

Abstract Measurements of the local heat transfer distribution on smooth and roughened surfaces under an array of angled impinging jets are presented. The test rig is designed to simulate impingement with cross-flow in one direction which is a common method for cooling gas turbine components such as the combustion liner. Jet angle is varied between 30, 60, and 90 degrees as measured from the impingement surface, which is either smooth or randomly roughened. Liquid crystal video thermography is used to capture surface temperature data at five different jet Reynolds numbers ranging between 15,000 and 35,000. The effect of jet angle, Reynolds number, gap, and surface roughness on heat transfer efficiency and pressure loss is determined along with the various interactions among these parameters. Peak heat transfer coefficients for the range of Reynolds number from 15,000 to 35,000 are highest for orthogonal jets impinging on roughened surface; peak Nu values for this configuration ranged from 88 to 165 depending on Reynolds number. The ratio of peak to average Nu is lowest for 30-degree jets impinging on roughened surfaces. It is often desirable to minimize this ratio in order to decrease thermal gradients, which could lead to thermal fatigue. High thermal stress can significantly reduce the useful life of engineering components and machinery. Peak heat transfer coefficients decay in the cross-flow direction by close to 24% over a dimensionless length of 20. The decrease of spanwise average Nu in the crossflow direction is lowest for the case of 30-degree jets impinging on a roughened surface where the decrease was less than 3%. The decrease is greatest for 30-degree jet impingement on a smooth surface where the stagnation point Nu decreased by more than 23% for some Reynolds numbers.

Porous disks are commonly encountered in experimental studies dealing with flow through objects such as wind turbines, parachutes, and fluidic devices to regulate pressure and/or downstream turbulence. Perforations are typically staggered and only porosity is altered to attain the required disk drag coefficient, despite a documented influence of topology. Few works have reported, however, to which extent the spatial distribution of the circular perforations affect the mean flow pertaining freestanding disks, and for this reason, this work presents a first, more systematic study focused on the effect of azimuthally varying hole topology and porosity on disk drag and near-wake characteristics. An experimental study performed in airflows of negligible freestream turbulence at Reynolds numbers in the order of 105 is reported and related to the existing literature to ensure reliability. Complementary to drag measurements, near-wake surveys have been performed on a variety of perforation layouts using two-component laser Doppler velocimetry and two-component particle image velocimetry. It is shown that minor changes in perforations can cause drastic changes in near-wake flow topology and no perforation layout can be consistently associated with highest drag. Explicit empirical expressions for drag coefficient linked with the simplified topologies considered have been derived.
