The influence of selective laser melting (SLM) process parameters such as laser power, build direction and scan hatch spacing on mechanical properties, microstructures and porosity formation in AISI 316L components is presented. Experimental activities are performed based on a statistical design-of-experiment approach based on a three-factor, two-level experimental plane. Mechanical tests, as well as optical and SEM analyses were carried out to correlate the resulting microstructures and defects to the process parameters. In order to better characterize the process, gas type, gas flux, coater speed and component positioning were also taken into account.

The results of the research on selective laser melting process of the Inconel 718 superalloy powder under conditions of additive manufacturing of parts for special purposes are presented. The influence of process parameters on the quality of manufactured parts is shown. Process parameters which allow manufacturing parts with the density close to 100%, are determined. Also, the results of mechanical tests and investigation of microstructure are presented.

Abstract For the derivation of part quality increasing process strategies, knowledge about interactions between sub-processes of selective laser melting (SLM) and resulting part properties is necessary. The SLM process consists of three major sub-processes: powder coating, exposure, and material consolidation. According to the interaction of sub-processes, resulting processing conditions during SLM determine the part properties by changing micro structural pore number and distribution. In addition to absolute temperatures, the time-dependency of the thermal fields also influences the porosity of molten parts. Present process strategies tend to decrease building time by acceleration of the subprocesses. Apart from prior investigated acceleration of the exposure, the powder coating step is focused. Within the paper, the authors analyze the basic interactions between different coating parameters and part properties. The authors estimate an interaction between coating speed and resulting part properties due to a force impact caused by the moved coating mechanism. Therefore, specimens produced with different coating speeds are analyzed with imaging technologies as well as mechanical tests. Based on the investigations, new processing strategies can be established considering the forces applied to the powder bed during the coating process, as well as the unique compaction behavior of current and future used powders.

The aim of this study is to observe the effect of process parameters on residual stresses and relative density of Ti6Al4V samples produced by Selective Laser Melting. The investigated parameters were hatch laser power, hatch laser velocity, border laser velocity, high-temperature preheating and time delay. Residual stresses were evaluated by the bridge curvature method and relative density by the optical method. The effect of the observed process parameters was estimated by the design of experiment and surface response methods. It was found that for an effective residual stress reduction, the high preheating temperature was the most significant parameter. High preheating temperature also increased the relative density but caused changes in the chemical composition of Ti6Al4V unmelted powder. Chemical analysis proved that after one build job with high preheating temperature, oxygen and hydrogen content exceeded the ASTM B348 limits for Grade 5 titanium.

Selective Laser Melting SLM is one of the most popular three dimensional printing methods, which can be used for manufactured real elements (with high geometrical complexity) in many application, such as medicine, automotive or aerospace industries. The SLM final parts are characterized by high mechanical properties and satisfactory physicochemical properties. However, the properties of parts depend of process parameters optimization. In this paper, effects of processing parameters, such as laser power P, scanning speed SP, layer thickness t or point distance PD on defect formation and relative densities of manufactured elements are explored. For the purpose the stainless steel 316L and pure titanium Grade II are used. The process optimization were carried out according to the formula of energy density, which is delivered to the powder material. The stainless steel samples were divided into 12 groups, depends of the energy density. The titanium parts were printed at the same value of energy, and the process parameters are changed. The microscope observation and relative density measurements were carried out. Based on the obtained results, it can be confuted that the SLM parameters have a significant effect on the samples properties and the mechanism formed defect in both material are similar.
