Accurate Short Period Corrosion Growth Rates From Combined MFL-UT Inline Inspection: A Case Study

Inline inspection (ILI) identifies most significant anomalies - at the time of inspection. To recognize those individual features, which have the highest potential to enter these ranks, perhaps soon, is a challenging question, which is not necessarily covered with established ILI approaches. Whether the circumstances permit the identification and reliable description of individual corrosion hot spots depend on the ILI quality, the specific feature shape-dependent sizing, the comparability of the data and the time-dependent development of the anomaly. This case study demonstrates the enormous benefits of the combination of two technologies. The robust, indirect Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL) methodology and the direct Ultrasonic Testing (UT) ILI tool. The intelligent interpretative combination of the two ILI information sources exceeds significantly the straight forward statistical combination benefit. The presented approach demonstrates how to: • identify features not suitable to UT stand alone sizing. • compensate systematic errors from MFL sizing models and calibration assumptions. • introduce UT shape information as major improvement to MFL sizing. • apply MFL amplitude based depth sizing. • reduce the subsequent sizing tolerance to values, which allow corrosion prediction based on even short term repeated ILI intervals. Applied to the identified group of pinholes and embedded pinholes with an average maximum depth of more than 50% the method delivered a depth sizing accuracy of ±6.0% wall thickness at 80% certainty. The fact, that even smaller corrosion growth rate values become resolvable, allows for the equivalent shortening of the re-inspection intervals and for the prolongation of the validity of prediction, whatever may be advisable in specific cases. Also it is shown, that this approach does not require to rerun similar tools, because systematic errors can be compensated absolutely with this approach. The optimization of inspection strategies and methods with regard to specific pipeline problems can have monetary benefit even at higher inspection costs. More sophisticated ILI systems requiring specialist data analysis become justified for equivalent pipeline use cases. The presented combination of the two independent ILI methodologies bears significant useful potential to approach aggressive corrosion mechanisms, e.g. microbial corrosion or CP shielding.

In-Line Inspection (ILI) is used to prioritize metal loss conditions based on predicted failure pressure in accordance with methods prescribed in industry standards such as ASME B31G-2009. Corrosion may occur in multiple areas of metal loss that interact and may result in a lower failure pressure than if flaws were analyzed separately. The B31G standard recommends a flaw interaction criterion for ILI metal loss predictions within a longitudinal and circumferential spacing of 3 times wall thickness, but cautions that methods employed for clustering of ILI anomalies should be validated with results from direct measurements in the ditch. Recent advances in non-destructive examination (NDE) and data correlation software have enabled reliable comparisons of ILI burst pressure predictions with the results from in-ditch examination. Data correlation using pattern matching algorithms allows the consideration of detection and reporting thresholds for both ILI and field measurements, and determination of error in the calculated failure pressure prediction attributable to the flaw interaction criterion. This paper presents a case study of magnetic flux leakage ILI failure pressure predictions compared with field results obtained during excavations. The effect of interaction criterion on calculated failure pressure and the probability of an ILI measurement underestimating failure pressure have been studied. We concluded a reason failure pressure specifications do not exist for ILI measurements is because of the variety of possible interaction criteria and data thresholds that can be employed, and demonstrate herein a method for their validation.

Mining planning and its correct sequencing are essential to facilitate the exploitation of minerals both economically and environmentally, thus ensuring the feasibility of the mining in operational and economic terms. The small geological complexity or the low aggregate value of a mineral deposit tends to result in the planning stages being neglected, so the mining begins without the necessary detailing or it is only scheduled for a short period of time. Thus, in order to ensure a sustainable sequence of operations, and to predict the environmental impacts caused by mining activities and suggest options that would allow the establishment of mitigation measures for these impacts, the feasibility of the technical and economic utilization was evaluated for an occurrence of bentonite in the Bañado de Medina deposit located in the Department of Cerro Largo, Uruguay, respecting the local environment in the process so as to give the project a strong character of sustainability.

Shared psychotic disorder, characterized by shared delusion among two or more subjects (termed “Folie à deux,” “trois,” etc.), is often associated with strong religious beliefs or social isolation, factors creating strong psychological sympathy. Recently, we treated a rare familial case of “Folie à quatre” in central Tokyo without such influences. The proband was a schizophrenia patient and younger brother within monozygotic twins. Positive symptoms were “transmitted” to remaining family members, his elder brother, mother, and father father, in a relatively short period of three months. Although the pathophysiology of these positive symptoms (delusions and hallucinations) remains unclear, the transmission pattern suggests the primacy of social and environmental factors (and/or their interaction), while genetics appeared less influential in this “Folie à famille.” Although undiagnosed psychoses in the whole family cannot be excluded, they did not share the other negative schizophrenia symptoms of the proband. A strong familial connection appeared to be the most important factor for the common delusion and hallucination.

Abstract Gold alloys and silver alloys have always been widely employed in the production of significant objects. With high reflectivity, precious metals are perceived as both materials and colours, and can be skilfully combined to produce metallic polychrome effects. Because their structure and composition contain information on their manufacture, use, disclaim and degradation, items in gold and in silver enclose major information on the technologies employed by past societies and on exchange networks. This information can be acquired using appropriate analytical protocols, established according to the nature of the query and the characteristics of the objects. By using physicochemical techniques, it is possible to identify the technologies, materials and tools used by the artisan and, in particular cases, to situate the sources of raw materials and the workshops producing the objects, as well as to follow the trade routes. The aim of this work is to outline major achievements in the study of goldwork and silverwork based on the different physicochemical methods that are available, and to refer the analytical difficulties that have to be faced when studying objects made from precious metals. Based on several examples, three topics are addressed. The first concerns the major role of the techniques of exam when describing shaping, decorating, assembling and finishing; the second considers the search for metallic polychrome effects in some cultural areas; and the third discusses the challenging question of fingerprinting. A fourth section is dedicated to a short reflection on the difficulties related to the identification of the atmospheric corrosion mechanisms of precious metals.

This paper explores as a case study the development of e-cigarette use and smoking within small friendship group (n=8) in Glasgow, Scotland. Interviewed twice at six months apart these 16/17 year olds reported substantial change in their use of and attitudes towards e-cigarettes and tobacco. At time 1 vaping generated much excitement and interest, with 6/8 having their own vape device. At time 2 only two young people still vaped, with the others no longer professing any interest in continued vaping. The two regular smokers, who had been smoking before they first vaped, now only vaped privately and to reduce their tobacco intake. This small case study illustrates plasticity in the use of electronic cigarettes; just as young people can initiate using these devices so too can they more away from their use- with such changes in actual use occurring within a relatively short period of time. These findings demonstrate more than anything else the volatility in young peoples’ substance use behaviour. If we are to better understand these behaviours we require both quantitative and qualitative research studies that are capable of both monitoring changes in individual and group behaviour over time but which are also able to elucidate the nuance of individual behaviour differentiating between long term, frequent, consistent use and more episodic, experimental and infrequent use by young people.

In March 2020, most physical therapy schools across the globe transitioned to online learning in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. This change posed unique challenges not only because it required adapting to new technology in a short period but, more importantly, it involved developing ways to teach hands-on psychomotor and clinical skills virtually while maintaining the quality of instruction. In response to the rapid transition, the physical therapy program at MGH Institute of Health Professions (IHP)designed and implemented a novel and effective coaching model to address the challenges. The model was developed based on experiential learning theory, constructivism, a coaching framework, and andragogical principles of feedback and reflection. Not only did the model meet its objectives of effectively teaching basic psychomotor skills in the virtual environment, but it may also have andragogical benefits that can be applied to traditional face-to-face methods. This case study describes the theoretical underpinning of the model, its development and implementation, the perceived effectiveness for learning psychomotor skills in a virtual environment, and the potential for broader relevance to future models of physical therapy education.

The people of Nepal have witnessed a number of political shifts within a comparatively short period of the country's history. The political revolution of 1950, which precedes all important political movements, eliminated the century-long Rana oligarchy and established the multiparty system. In 1960, late King Mahendra abolished the newly established multi-party system and implemented his own model of governance called the Panchayat system. The Panchayat system was designed to allow the King to rule the country according to his will, and the system alienated ordinary people from political processes. This system, too, came to an end after the popular movement of 1990 (widely known as jana andolan) which re-established the multi-party system in the country.
