A New Role on the Pipeline EPCM Project

Recent developments in the application of spatial information technologies have brought opportunities for dramatic improvements in speed, accuracy and cost-effectiveness of production of pipeline project deliverables. In addition to the potential for design and construction improvements, life cycle improvements are found through the use of spatial data relating to pipeline operation, environmental stewardship, regulatory, public and other stakeholder communications. However, these opportunities have not been consistently captured on all pipeline jobs. Part of the challenge in the introduction of new technology is to align members of the team so that skills and assigned tasks are matched. Traditionally, pipeline design and construction projects have employed a proven team organization structure. Changes to the tradition are necessary. This paper discusses the main advantages of using spatial information on a pipeline project. Furthermore, a discussion of the various project team roles explores how to leverage the new technologies effectively. Examples drawn from the largest pipeline projects currently in process will highlight the lessons learned to date.

This article introduces Proxy Technology Assessment (PTA) as a methodological approach that can widen the scope of virtual world and game research. Studies of how people experience virtual worlds and games often focus on individual in-world or in-game experiences. However, people do not perceive these worlds and games in isolation. They are embedded within a social context that has strongly intertwined online and offline components. Studying virtual experiences while accounting for these interconnections calls for new methodological approaches. PTA answers this call.Combining several methods, PTA can be used to investigate how new technology may impact and settle within people's everyday life (Pierson et al., 2006). It involves introducing related devices or applications, available today, to users in their natural setting and studying the context-embedded practices they alter or evoke. This allows researchers to detect social and functional requirements to improve the design of new technologies. These requirements, like the practices under investigation, do not stop at the outlines of a magic circle (cf. Huizinga, 1955).We will start this article by contextualizing and defining PTA. Next, we will describe the practical implementation of PTA. Each step of the procedure will be illustrated with examples and supplemented with lessons learned from two interdisciplinary scientific projects, Hi-Masquerade and Teleon, concerned with how people perceive and use virtual worlds and games respectively.

Since antiquity, human activity and technological innovations endanger environmental balance. Any new technology generates more business activity, leading to increased resource extraction and waste and directly menacing natural ecosystems. As a result, technological progress and economic growth are based on unsustainable practices. In the last few decades, ICT has accelerated and globalized business activity and many problems emerged as scarcity of natural resources, global warming, and population growth are only few of them. For less than 20 years, information technologies made the world smaller and smarter. ICT transformed all aspects of human life including business processes and practices, communication, logistics and transportation, learning, entertainment, commerce, and many others. The present research aims to outline some of the challenges to new technologies and IT/IS practices. It proposes a practice-oriented framework for adoption of green IT/IS strategy in companies. While literature is dominated by specific technological issues, businesses still miss the general vision of sustainable/green/clean technologies and how to adopt green IT/IS. Therefore, the discussion section of this chapter proposes an analysis of wider practices and initiatives leading to green IT/IS.

New technologies have changed the way today's own label products are being offered. Today the Internet and even more the so-called social networks have played key roles in dispersing any particular product in a more efficient and dynamic sense. Also, having a smartphone and a wireless high-speed network are no longer a luxury or a temporary fad, but rather a necessity for the new generations. These technological advances and new marketing trends have not gone unnoticed by the medium and large stores. The augmented reality applied to interactive catalogs is a new technology that supports the adding of virtual reality to a real environment which in turn makes it a tool for discovering new uses, forms, and in this case, spending habits. The challenge for companies with their private labels in achieving their business objectives, is providing customers with products and services of the highest quality, thus promoting the efficient and streamlined use of all resources that are accounted for and at the same time promoting the use of new information technologies as a strategic competitive.

This paper presents a case study of the organizational change process associated with the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) year-long research program that implemented a cloud-based mobile project inspection application to 18 project engineering offices (PEO) across the state. Ultimately, four out of the 18 PEOs decided to adopt the new technology. Data from semi-structured interviews and a user study conducted two months after implementation are used to identify organizational change strategies used by WSDOT, and how those relate to ideas from the general literature on change management. The loss of upper management program leaders, inadequate communication and training to prepare personnel for the change, and policy and procedural uncertainties in integrating the change with other systems and operations were found to be factors that may have influenced the outcome of the program. While this paper focuses on one DOT’s efforts, other DOTs may have similar organizational structures and implementation efforts, and the findings and lessons learned could serve as a representative model for how such implementation might best be accomplished in a DOT and how that might differ from traditional change management guidance.

ABSTRACT The author of this essay argues that the success or failure of development depends on the availability of technology. The invention and development of new technologies are instrumental in changing the way people live, the way people communicate and the way people respond to their environment. However, despite the advantages of new technologies, the problem of access remains an enduring one. In South Africa, access to new communications and information technologies is limited to a few people owing to the high costs of these technologies. Therefore, the mere acquisition of new technology may not help that much to end the underdevelopment of many parts of the world, including South Africa. Mjwacu claims that the imbalance or gap that the use of new technology and the failure to development the social infrastructure needed to use this technology can lead directly to an infringement of people's right of access to the media. She argues that the emphasis needs to be placed on establishing community-based communication systems in countries such as South Africa to advance both their technological and social development.

During the past decade, Taiwan has experienced an unusual and fast growing in the industry of mapping, remote sensing, spatial information and related markets. A successful space program and dozens of advanced airborne and ground-based remote sensing instruments as well as mobile mapping systems have been implemented and put into operation to support the vast demands of geospatial data acquisition. Moreover, in addition to the government agencies and research institutes, there are also tens of companies in the private sector providing geo-spatial data and services. However, the fast developing industry is also posing a great challenge to the education sector in Taiwan, especially the higher education for geo-spatial information. Facing this fast developing industry, the demands of skilled professionals and new technologies in order to address diversified needs are indubitably high. Consequently, while delighting in the expanding and prospering benefitted from the fast growing industry, how to fulfill these demands has become a challenge for the remote sensing and spatial information disciplines in the higher education institutes in Taiwan. This paper provides a brief insight into the status of the remote sensing and spatial information industry in Taiwan as well as the challenges of the education and technology transfer to support the increasing demands and to ensure the continuous development of the industry. In addition to the report of the current status of the remote sensing and spatial information related courses and programs in the colleges and universities, current and potential threatening issues and possible resolutions are also discussed in different points of view.

Мобильные ГИС-приложения становятся все более сложными, как решаемые с их помощью задачи. Обычное ГИС-приложение должно включать такие элементы, как искусственный интеллект, распознавание образов или машинное обучение, реляционные или нереляционные базы данных, пространственное представление и рассуждения. Такие компании, как Google и Apple, разрабатывают новые технологии, связанные с разработкой мобильных приложений. Например, Apple представила в 2019 году на WWDC2019 и WWDC2020 новую технологию под названием SwiftUI, которая направлена на сложности разработки мобильного приложения и позволяющая интегрировать такие технологии, как Mapkit, для представления пространственной информации. В данной работе представлены исследования преимуществ использования SwiftUI для интеграции Mapkit в качестве основы пространственного представления для облегчения разработки мобильных ГИС-приложений. Информационные технологии имеют большое разнообразие применений в различных областях науки. Например, искусственный интеллект и машинное обучение - это технологии, которые начинают широко использоваться в мобильных приложениях. Целью данной работы является исследования способов разработки мобильных приложений, которые могут выполнять представление и вычисления информации в соответствии с требованиями. Mobile GIS applications are becoming more and more complex, as the tasks they solve are. A typical GIS application should include elements such as artificial intelligence, pattern recognition or machine learning, relational or non-relational databases, spatial representation and reasoning. Companies such as Google and Apple are developing new technologies related to the development of mobile applications. For example, Apple introduced a new technology called SwiftUI at WWDC2019 and WWDC2020 in 2019, which aims to reduce the complexity of mobile application development and allows integrating technologies such as Mapkit to represent spatial information. This paper presents studies of the advantages of using SwiftUI to integrate Mapkit as a basis for spatial representation to facilitate the development of mobile GIS applications. Information technologies have a wide variety of applications in various fields of science. For example, artificial intelligence and machine learning are technologies that are beginning to be widely used in mobile applications. The purpose of this work is to investigate ways to develop mobile applications that can perform the presentation and calculation of information in accordance with the requirements.

Abstract. Digitization and connectivity are hot topics for nearly every company today; numerous new technologies offer diverse options. In this project, a specific technology − smart glasses − was implemented in a manufacturing company. The implementation process was innovative, as the employees’ perspective was taken into account from the beginning, rather than solely designing the technological aspects and involving the users after decisions were taken. Employees involved with the new technology were surveyed to take into account the employees’ expectations and fears regarding work design characteristics. This allowed us to customize features of the smart glasses, adapt the work organization, and inform employees about unclear points concerning the implementation process. Moreover, the competencies required for future work were analyzed using a comprehensive work analysis method. We report the results of two quantitative studies and summarize the lessons learned from this project, which can serve as a guideline for other companies.

The territories and objects of the nature reserve fund are the important centers for the provision of services related to environmentally friendly tourism in the Sumy region. As of 01.01.2017, the nature reserve fund of the region has 263 territories and objects with a total (actual) area of 176.7 thousand hectares, of which the national value is 19 objects with an area of 50.5 thousand hectares (7.3 %), of local importance – 244 objects with an area of 126.2 thousand hectares (92.7 %). The ratio of the area of the NRF to the area of the oblast ("reserve index") is 7.41 %. The largest recreational and tourist potential has the three largest protected areas of Sumy Region: Desniansko-Starogutsky National Nature Park, Getmanski National Nature Park, and the Seymsky Regional Landscape Park. Involvement of territories and objects of the nature reserve fund in tourism activity should be carried out under strict observance of environmental legislation, defined protection regimes and norms regarding volumes, intensity of recreational loads. Such activities should complement the monitoring system research, including using new technologies based on geographic information systems (GIS). It is expedient and informative to use such resources as Google Maps, EARTH OBSERVING SYSTEM (EOS), Public cadastral maps of Ukraine, etc. The application of these information-analytical technologies and the results of the space monitoring provides an assessment of the dynamics of the characteristics of the biotopes and the spatial distribution of such investigated integral environmental parameters as the shape and perimeter of the protected zone of the protected object and the processes of its seasonal and long-term successional changes. Provided that a service network is created, tourist ecological routes with use of forest recreational ecosystems to the northeast of Sumy may be interesting. The introduction of information technologies into the system of natural protected areas will significantly affect the observance of the regime of protection of territories and objects of the ecological network and will allow to improve measures on environmental monitoring and background monitoring. A promising area of geomonitoring is the creation of GIS-forms of natural-protected fund objects that combine the collection, storage, processing, access, display and distribution of spatial data, allows you to store, make changes, analyze and monitor their condition in a consistent manner. The exploitation of these databases with system monitoring of zoned and ordered complexes will allow to remove uncontrolled recreational loads for a significant part of natural groups and ensure their effective use on the basis of sustainable development.
