Practical Method of Updating Stochastic Remaining Life of Pipelines Using ILI Data

The paper describes a new practical method of updating the stochastic remnant life of pipelines with defects using ILI data. The paper describes a comprehensive algorithm for assessing pipeline remnant life taking into account the stochastic results of in-line inspection (ILI). It is assumed that the pipeline segment wall has a longitudinal external crack of semi-elliptical form and is described by the J-integral. The limit state function (LSF) is described as the difference of the critical and current value of the J-integral. The latter is calculated for the current time of pipe performance and is assumed known due to monitoring of the pumping equipment. The critical crack depth is defined using the notion of fracture toughness and the J-integral approach. The algorithm contains solutions of three sequentially interconnected problems. First, the deterministic problem of fatigue crack growth (FCG) is analyzed. Then the stochastic FCG is analyzed. The probability of failure assessment algorithm is designed on the basis of the authors’ version of the adaptive important sampling (AIS) procedure. The main steps of the AIS algorithm are described in detail. The samples are generated in such a way, that at all times a majority of samples belong to the fracture region. Finally, the results of the latest ILI are fused into the algorithm, providing best possible assessment of pipeline remnant life as a random variable. The remnant life update for pipeline segment with crack-like defects using ILI data takes into account three possible outcomes: defect not discovered: defect is discovered but not measured; defect is discovered and measured. This result permits solving most important problems of pipeline maintenance: prioritization of pipeline segments for repair/rehabilitation; optimization of the time between ILI; minimization of pipe operational risk. Two real cases are described of assessing the probability of fracture/leak of a pipeline section with an external crack at different periods of its performance. The described approach currently is being generalized for the case of multiple stress corrosion SC cracks.

The response of a component in a multidisciplinary system is affected by not only the discipline to which it belongs, but also by other disciplines of the system. If any components are subject to time-dependent uncertainties, responses of all the components and the system are also time dependent. Thus, time-dependent multidisciplinary reliability analysis is required. To extend the current time-dependent reliability analysis for a single component, this work develops a time-dependent multidisciplinary reliability method for components in a multidisciplinary system under stationary stochastic processes. The method modifies the First and Second Order Reliability Methods (FORM and SORM) so that the Multidisciplinary Analysis (MDA) is incorporated while approximating the limit-state function of the component under consideration. Then Monte Carlo simulation is used to calculate the reliability without calling the original limit-state function. Two examples are used to demonstrate and evaluate the proposed method.

Considering the disadvantages of the slice method commonly employed in reliability analysis of slopes, a novel method (Spoke model) was proposed for reliability analysis and safety factor calculation of slopes in this work based on geometrical relationship among slices. The safety factor and the coefficients of limit state function of slopes could be achieved with the Gaussian integral method. The minimum safety factor and the minimum reliability index, as well as their corresponding coordinates on the slip surface, can be calculated with the improved JC method and the searching method. A novel and practical method for reliability analysis of slopes has been achieved. With this method the slice process could be avoided, which helps to eliminate some calculation errors caused by oversimplified assumption. Moreover, the explicit expression of safety factor in this method requires no repeated iterative solution, which is employed in traditional slice methods, as well as can be developed into a limit state function required by calculation of the reliability index. It is demonstrated that this method works efficiently and succinctly in evaluation of reliability index and safety factor for soil slopes.

This paper aims to carry out sensitivity analyses to study how the effect of each design variable on the performance of self-centering buckling restrained brace (SC-BRB) and the corresponding buckling restrained brace (BRB) without shape memory alloy (SMA) rods. Furthermore, the reliability analyses of BRB and SC-BRB are performed in this study. Considering the high computational cost of the simulation methods, three Meta-models including the Kriging, radial basis function (RBF), and polynomial response surface (PRSM) are utilized to construct the surrogate models. For this aim, the nonlinear dynamic analyses are conducted on both BRB and SC-BRB by using OpenSees software. The results showed that the SMA area, SMA length ratio, and BRB core area have the most effect on the failure probability of SC-BRB. It is concluded that Kriging-based Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) gives the best performance to estimate the limit state function (LSF) of BRB and SC-BRB in the reliability analysis procedures. Considering the effects of changing the maximum cyclic loading on the failure probability computation and comparison of the failure probability for different LSFs, it is also found that the reliability indices of SC-BRB were always higher than the corresponding reliability indices determined for BRB which confirms the performance superiority of SC-BRB than BRB.

The response surface method was proposed as a collection of statistical and mathematical techniques that are useful for modeling and analyzing a system which is influenced by several input variables. This method gives an explicit approximation of the implicit limit state function of the structure through a number of deterministic structural analyses. However, the position of the experimental points is very important to improve the accuracy of the evaluation of failure probability. In the paper, the experimental points are obtained by using Givens transformation in such way these experimental points nearly close to limit state function. A Numerical example is presented to demonstrate the improved accuracy and computational efficiency of the proposed method compared to the classical response surface method. As seen from the result of the example, the proposed method leads to a better approximation of the limit state function over a large region of the design space, and the number of experimental points using the proposed method is less than that of classical response surface method.

This study is focused on examining the effect of critical crack width in combination with crack depth on chloride penetration into concrete. Because concrete structures have to meet a minimum service-life, critical crack width has become an important parameter. Specimens with different crack width / crack length have been subjected to rapid chloride migration testing (RCM). The results of this study show a critical crack width of about 0.012 mm. Cracks smaller than this critical crack width are considered not to have a significant influence on the rate of chloride transport inwards, while chloride penetration does proceed faster above this critical crack width.

Piping elbows under bending moment are vulnerable to cracking at crown. The structural integrity assessment requires evaluation of J-integral. The J-integral values for elbows with axial part-through internal crack at crown under in-plane bending moment are limited in open literature. This paper presents the J-integral results of a thick and thin, 90-degree, long radius elbow subjected to in-plane opening bending moment based on number of finite element analyses covering different crack configurations. The non-linear elastic-plastic finite element analyses were performed using WARP3D software. Both geometrical and material nonlinearity were considered in the study. The geometry considered were for Rm/t = 5, and 12 with ratio of crack depth to wall thickness, a/t = 0.15, 0.25, 0.5 and 0.75 and ratio of crack length to crack depth, 2c/a = 6, 8, 10 and 12.

Today there is an urgent need for effective monitoring whether for old buildings or new ones. While conventional early warning system for real-time monitoring is based on safety factor, this paper proposes a new reliability-based framework to monitor the safety of RC buildings probabilistically. The framework includes modeling resistance, predicting probability distribution of load effect, calculating reliability and setting reliability index threshold. The in-situ test data enables to update the resistance model through a Bayesian process. Meanwhile, the observed monitoring data predicts the probability distribution of load effect. FORM is used to calculate the reliability because the limit state function for real-time monitoring is linear and simple. This study shows that the reliability-based early warning system is of more scientific sense in quantifying the safety and may be applied to many engineering fields.

<p>The Response Surface Method (RSM) has become an essential tool to solve structural reliability problems due to its accuracy, efficacy, and facility for coupling with Nonlinear Finite Element Analysis (NLFEA). In this paper, some strategies to improve the RSM efficacy without compromising its accuracy are tested. Initially, each strategy is implemented to assess the safety level of a highly nonlinear explicit limit state function. The strategy with the best results is then identified and used to carry out a reliability analysis of a prestressed concrete bridge, considering the nonlinear material behavior through NLFEA simulation. The calculated value of &#120573; is compared with the target value established in Eurocode for ULS. The results showed how RSM can be a practical methodology and how the improvements presented can reduce the computational cost of a traditional RSM giving a good alternative to simulation methods such as Monte Carlo.</p>

This paper reports the results of the study on the failure modes and limit loads of piping in nuclear power plants subjected to cyclic seismic loading. By investigating the past fracture tests and earthquake resistance tests, it became clear that dominant failure mode of piping was fatigue, and the effect of ratchet strain was negligible. Until now, the stress generated with the acceleration of an earthquake was classified into the primary stress. However, the relationship between the input acceleration and the seismic response displacement of the pipe observed from earthquake resistance tests is non-linear, and increasing rate of displacement is lower than that of input acceleration in elastic-plastic stress condition. Therefore, the seismic loading can be treated as displacement controlled loading. To evaluate the reliability-based critical acceleration, a limit state function was defined taking the variations in the fatigue strength or some parameters into consideration. By using the limit state function, the reliability was evaluated for the typical piping of boiling water reactor (BWR) plants subjected to cyclic seismic loading, and a partial safety factors were calculated. Based on these results, a fatigue curve corresponding to the target reliability was proposed.
