Abstract The goal of this research is to present an analytical model of nanostructures and study the effects of their geometry on the performance of micro channels. The pressure drop experienced by micro channels is of interest as it presents a limit on forced convection heat transfer. This work will demonstrate how the presence of nanostructures primarily affects pressure drop as well as other cooling flow characteristics. Additional work in the impact of microchannel cross-sectional geometry and friction factor formulation is provided as well. Multiple transient analyses were performed in ANSYS FLUENT to ascertain performance characteristics of microchannels without the presence of hydrophobic nanostructures. The results were compared to the analytical model developed in this study.

Knowledge of flow pattern and flow pattern transitions is essential to the development of reliable predictive tools for pressure drop and heat transfer in two-phase micro-channel heat sinks. In the present study, experiments were conducted with adiabatic nitrogen-water two-phase flow in a rectangular micro-channel having a 0.406 × 2.032 mm cross-section. Superficial velocities of nitrogen and water ranged from 0.08 to 81.92 m/s and 0.04 to 10.24 m/s, respectively. Flow patterns were first identified using high-speed video imaging, and still photos were then taken for representative patterns. Results reveal that the dominant flow patterns are slug and annular, with bubbly flow occurring only occasionally; stratified and churn flow were never observed. A flow pattern map was constructed and compared with previous maps and predictions of flow pattern transition models. Annual flow is identified as the dominant flow pattern for conditions relevant to two-phase micro-channel heat sinks, and forms the basis for development of a theoretical model for both pressure drop and heat transfer in micro-channels. Features unique to two-phase micro-channel flow, such as laminar liquid and gas flows, smooth liquid-gas interface, and strong entrainment and deposition effects are incorporated into the model. The model shows good agreement with experimental data for water-cooled heat sinks.

Abstract In this work, we extend our heat transfer performance study on our proposed new and novel 3D printable architected heat sinks with geometrically complex structures based on triply periodic minimal surfaces (TPMS). Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling is used to assess the effect of porosity distribution, heat load, and isothermal boundary condition on the performance of the proposed TPMS-based heat sinks in active cooling using natural and forced convection heat transfer environments. The convection heat transfer coefficient, surface temperature, pressure drop are predicted using CFD method. The CFD model is validated using experimental results for the pressure drop and is verified by standard analytical results. Three TPMS structures are investigated in different orientations. Dimensionless heat transfer groups are developed to globalize the heat transfer performance of the proposed heat sinks.

Few papers investigated the effect of different nano-fluids and geometrical parameters of the micro channels on the performance of heat sinks. In this study, Nusselt number and pressure drop are investigated in differential geometry and Reynolds numbers. Then the effect of the micro-channel is studied for different heat flux. The results show that hexagonal micro-channels represents a better performance than the rectangular and the heat transfer of without using nano-particles in the hexagonal cross-section is about 9% higher than the rectangular cross-section and with the presence of nanoparticles (Al2O3 - CUO- TiO2, φ  =  4%), heat transfer is about 30 to 40% higher than the base liquid.

The high thermal resistance of the airside of the compact heat exchanger results in a low heat transfer rate. Vortex generator (VG) is one of the effective passive methods to increase convection heat transfer by generating longitudinal vortex (LV), which results in an increase in fluid mixing. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the convection heat transfer characteristics and the pressure drop of airflow in a rectangular channel in the presence of a concave rectangular winglet VG on a heated plate. Numerical calculations were performed on rectangular winglet pairs vortex generators (RWP VGs) and concave rectangular winglet pairs vortex generators (CRWP VGs) with a 45° angle of attack and one, two, and three pairs of VGs with and without holes. The simulation results show that the decrease in the value of convection heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop on CRWP with three perforated VG configuration is 4.63% and 3.28%, respectively, of the three pairs of CRWP VG without holes at an airflow velocity of 2 m/s.

The design and reliable operation of a two-phase micro-channel heat sink require a fundamental understanding of the complex transport phenomena associated with convective boiling in small, parallel coolant passages. This understanding is the primary goal of this paper. This goal is realized by exploring the following aspects of boiling in micro-channels: hydrodynamic instability, two-phase flow patterns, pressure drop, and convective boiling heat transfer. High-speed photographic methods were used to determine dominant flow patterns and explore as well as characterize hydrodynamic instabilities. Two types of dynamic instability were identified, a severe pressure drop oscillation and a mild parallel channel instability, and a simple method is recommended to completely suppress the former. Predictions of three popular two-phase pressure drop models and correlations were compared to micro-channel water data, and only a separated flow (Lockhart-Martinelli) correlation based on the assumption of laminar flow in both phases gave acceptable predictions. Several popular heat transfer correlations were also examined and deemed unsuitable for micro-channel heat sinks because all these correlations are based on turbulent flow assumptions, and do not capture the unique features of micro-channel flow such as abrupt transition to slug flow, hydrodynamic instability, and high droplet entrainment in the annular regime. These findings point to the need for further study of boiling behavior and new predictive tools specifically tailored to micro-channel heat sinks.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to numerically investigate the heat transfer enhancement by using two different nanofluids flow throughout the square duct under a constant heat flux (500 × 103 W/m2). Design/methodology/approach In numerical computations, ANSYS Fluent code based on the finite volume method was used to solve governing equations by iteratively. Water, Al2O3-water and TiO2-water nanofluids were used for different flow velocities changing 1 m/s to 8 m/s (i.e. Reynolds number varying from 3,000 to 100,000). Findings The results were compared with results published previously in the literature and close agreement was observed especially considering Dittus and Boelter correlation for water. It was found that from the obtained results, increasing flow velocity and volume fractions of nanoparticles has caused to increase Nu number for all cases. Besides, variations of pressure drop, Darcy friction factor are presented graphically and discussed in detail. The results are consistent with a deviation of 1.3 to 15 per cent with the results of other researchers. Originality/value The effects of the Re numbers and volume fractions of nanoparticles (0.01 ≤ Φ ≤ 0.04) on the heat transfer and fluid flow characteristics such as average Nu number, pressure drop (ΔP) and Darcy friction factor (f) were investigated.

This work numerically studies the thermal and hydraulic performance of double-layered microchannel heat sinks (DL-MCHS) for their application in the cooling of high heat flux microelectronic devices. The superiority of double-layered microchannel heat sinks was assessed by a comparison with a single-layered microchannel heat sink (SL-MCHS) with the same triangular microchannels. Five DL-MCHSs with different cross-sectional shapes—triangular, rectangular, trapezoidal, circular and reentrant Ω-shaped—were explored and compared. The results showed that DL-MCHS decreased wall temperatures and thermal resistance considerably, induced much more uniform wall temperature distribution, and reduced the pressure drop and pumping power in comparison with SL-MCHS. The DL-MCHS with trapezoidal microchannels performed the worst with regard to thermal resistance, pressure drop, and pumping power. The DL-MCHS with rectangular microchannels produced the best overall thermal performance and seemed to be the optimum when thermal performance was the prime concern. Nevertheless, the DL-MCHS with reentrant Ω-shaped microchannels should be selected when pumping power consumption was the most important consideration.

Many studies related with characteristics of fluid flow acrossing in a bluff body have been conducted. The aim of this research paper was to reduce pressure drop occuring in narrow channels, in which there was a circular cylindrical configuration with square cylinder as disturbance body. Another goal of this research was to reduce the drag force occuring in circular cylinder. Experimentally research of flow characteristics of the wind tunnel had a narrow channel a square cross-section, with implemenred of Reynolds number based on the hydraulic diameter from 5.21x104 to 1.56x105. Wind tunnel that was used had a 125x125mm cross-sectional area and the blockage ratio 26.4% and 36.4%. Specimen was in the form of circular cylinder and square cylinder as disturbance body. Variation of angle position was the inlet disturbance body with α = 200, 300, 400, 500 and 600, respectively. The results was obtained from this study was Reynolds Number value was directly linear with pressure drop there, it was marked by increasing of Reynolds number, the value was also increasing pressure drop. Additional information was obtained by adding inlet disturbance body shaped of square cylinder on the upstream side of the circular cylinder that could reduce pressure drop in the duct and reduce drag happening on a circular cylinder. The position of the optimum angle to reduce pressure drop and drag force was found on the inlet disturbance body with angle α = 300.
