Closed-Loop Flow Boiling Module With a Plated Heat Sink

A compact flow boiling module was developed for cooling a 100-W class package of about one-inch square in size. The cold plate, where heat is transferred from the package was made with a porous plating inside to augment boiling heat transfer. Heat transfer increased by a maximum of 50 percent when an organic refrigerant HFE-7100 was used, while the conditions for heat rejection to the ambient were kept unchanged. The heat rejection was achieved with an 80-mm fan with a matching corrugated fin radiator, whose effectiveness limits the overall size of the cooling module. The microscopic structure in the cold plate negatively influenced boiling of water, holding large patches of vapor bubbles on the surface. When the convective effect was increased by decreasing the cross sectional area of the channel by 10 times, heat transfer was further augmented approximately by 2 folds, making the use of the organic refrigerant an attractive option as the working fluid.

Flow boiling has the ability to remove high heat fluxes while maintaining a low wall superheat. Various researchers have developed enhanced microchannel geometries to improve the heat transfer performance of the system. Recently, a number of new studies have used the increasing flow cross-sectional area concept to overcome flow instabilities and record high CHF. In this work, a new geometry is experimentally investigated utilizing a radial cross-section, which provides the increasing fluid flow cross-sectional area in the flow direction. The flow boiling performance is studied using radial microchannels and water as the working fluid. Four different flow rates ranging from 120–400 mL/min are studied for this new geometry. Heat transfer performance (boiling curve and heat transfer coefficient) and pressure drop characteristics are discussed for all flow rates. Furthermore, the work is supported by high speed visualization of the bubble dynamics. The boiling performance obtained is compared to the existing data in the literature.

The effect of flow instabilities on flow boiling heat transfer in microchannels is investigated using water as the working fluid. The experimental test section has six parallel rectangular microchannels with each having a cross sectional area of 1054 × 197 microns. Flow restrictors are introduced at the inlet of each microchannel to stabilize the flow boiling process and avoid the backflow phenomena. The mass flow rate, inlet temperature of water, and the electric current supplied to the resistive cartridge heater are controlled to provide quantitative heat transfer information. The results are compared with the unrestricted flow configuration.

Flow boiling through microchannels is characterized by nucleation of vapor bubbles on the channel walls and their rapid growth as they fill the entire channel cross-section. In parallel microchannels connected through a common header, formation of vapor bubbles often results in flow maldistribution that leads to reversed flow in certain channels. The reversed flow is detrimental to the heat transfer and leads to early CHF condition. One way of eliminating the reversed flow is to incorporate flow restrictions at the channel inlet. In the present numerical study, a nucleating vapor bubble placed near the restricted end of a microchannel is numerically simulated. The complete Navier-Stokes equations along with continuity and energy equations are solved using the SIMPLER method. The liquid-vapor interface is captured using the level set technique. The results show that with no restriction the bubble moves towards the nearest channel outlet, whereas in the presence of a restriction, the bubble moves towards the distant but unrestricted end. It is proposed that channels with increasing cross-sectional area may be used to promote unidirectional growth of the vapor plugs and prevent reversed flow.

Driven by higher energy efficiency targets and industrial needs of process intensification and miniaturization, nanofluids have been proposed in energy conversion, power generation, chemical, electronic cooling, biological, and environmental systems. In space conditioning and in cooling systems for high power density electronics, vapor compression cycles provide cooling. The working fluid is a refrigerant and oil mixture. A small amount of lubricating oil is needed to lubricate and to seal the sliding parts of the compressors. In heat exchangers the oil in excess penalizes the heat transfer and increases the flow losses: both effects are highly undesired but yet unavoidable. This paper studies the heat transfer characteristics of nanorefrigerants, a new class of nanofluids defined as refrigerant and lubricant mixtures in which nano-size particles are dispersed in the high-viscosity liquid phase. The heat transfer coefficient is strongly governed by the viscous film excess layer that resides at the wall surface. In the state-of-the-art knowledge, while nanoparticles in the refrigerant and lubricant mixtures were recently experimentally studied and yielded convective in-tube flow boiling heat transfer enhancements by as much as 101%, the interactions of nanoparticles with the mixture still pose several open questions. The model developed in this work suggested that the nanoparticles in this excess layer generate a micro-convective mass flux transverse to the flow direction that augments the thermal energy transport within the oil film in addition to the macroscopic heat conduction and fluid convection effects. The nanoparticles motion in the shearing-induced and non-uniform shear rate field is added to the motion of the nanoparticles due to their own Brownian diffusion. The augmentation of the liquid phase thermal conductivity was predicted by the developed model but alone it did not fully explain the intensification on the two-phase flow boiling heat transfer coefficient reported in previous work in the literature. Thus, additional nano- and micro-scale heat transfer intensification mechanisms were proposed.

In-Vessel Retention by External Reactor Vessel Cooling (IVR-ERVC) is method of removing the decay heat by cooling reactor vessel after corium relocation, and is also one of severe accident management strategies. Estimating heat transfer coefficients (HTCs) is important to evaluate heat transfer capability of the ERVC. In this study, the HTCs of outer wall of reactor vessel lower head were experimentally measured under the IVR-ERVC situation of Large Loss of Coolant Accident (LLOCA) condition. Experimental equipment was designed to simulate flow boiling condition of ERVC natural circulation, and based on APR+ design. This study focused on effects of real reactor vessel geometry (2.5 m of radius curvature) and material (SA508) for the HTCs. Curved rectangular water channel (test section) was design to simulate water channel which is between the reactor vessel lower head outer wall and thermal insulator. Radius curvature, length, width and gap size of the test section were respectively 2.5 m, 1 m, 0.07 m and 0.15 m. Two connection parts were connected at inlet and outlet of the test section to maintain fluid flow condition, and its cross section geometry was same with one of test section. To simulate vessel lower head outer wall, thin SA508 plate was used as main heater, and test section supported the main heater. Thickness, width, length and radius curvature of the main heater were 1.2 mm, 0.07 m, 1 m and 2.5 m respectively. The main heater was heated by DC rectifier, and applied heat flux was under CHF value. The test section was changed for each experiment. The HTCs of whole reactor vessel lower head (bottom: 0 ° and top: 90 °) were measured by inclining the test section, and experiments were conducted at four angular ranges; 0–22.5, 22.5–45, 45–67.5 and 67.5–90 °. DI water was used as working fluid in this experiment, and all experiments were conducted at 400 kg/m2s of constant mass flux with atmospheric pressure. The working fluid temperatures were measured at two point of water loop by K-type thermocouple. The main heater surface temperatures were measured by IR camera. The main heater was coated by carbon spray to make uniform surface emissivity, and the IR camera emissivity calibration was also conducted with the coated main heater. The HTCs were calculated by measured main heater surface temperature. In this research, the HTC results of 10, 30, 60 and 90 ° inclination angle were presented, and were plotted with wall super heat.

The present study focuses on the experimental investigation of boiling heat transfer characteristics and pressure drop in a silicon microchannel heat sink. The microchannel heat sink consists of a rectangular silicon chip in which 45 rectangular microchannels were chemically etched with a depth of 295 μm, width of 254 μm, and a length of 16 mm. Un-encapsulated Thermochromic liquid Crystals (TLC) are used in the present work to enable nonintrusive and high spatial resolution temperature measurements. This measuring technique is used to provide accurate full and local surface-temperature and heat transfer coefficient measurements. Experiments are carried out for mass velocities ranging between 290 to 457 kg/m2.s and heat fluxes from 6.04 to 13.06 W/cm2 using FC-72 as the working fluid. Experimental results show that the pressure drop increases as the exit quality and the flow rate increase. High values of heat transfer coefficient can be obtained at low exit quality (xe < 0.2). However, the heat transfer coefficient decreases sharply and remains almost constant as the quality increases for an exit quality higher than 0.2.

The flow boiling process suffers from severe instabilities induced due to nucleation of vapor bubbles in a minichannel or a microchannel in a superheated liquid environment. In an effort to improve the flow boiling stability, several modifications are introduced and experiments are performed on 1054 × 197 μm microchannels with water as the working fluid. The cavity sizes and local liquid and wall conditions required at the onset of nucleation are analyzed. The effects of an inlet pressure restrictor and fabricated nucleation sites are evaluated as a means of stabilizing the flow boiling process and avoiding the backflow phenomena. The results are compared with the unrestricted flow configurations in smooth channels.

Flow boiling and heat transfer enhancement in four parallel microchannels using a dielectric working fluid, HFE 7000, was investigated. Each channel was 1000 μm wide and 510 μm high. A unique channel surface enhancement technique via diffusion bonding a layer of conductive fine wire mesh onto the heating wall was developed. According to the obtained flow boiling curves for both the bare and mesh channels, the amount of wall superheat was significantly reduced for the mesh channel at all stream-wise locations. This indicated that the nucleate boiling in the mesh channel was enhanced due to the increase of nucleation sites the mesh introduced. Both the nucleate boiling dominated and convective evaporation dominated regimes were identified. In addition, the overall trend for the flow boiling heat transfer coefficient, with respect to vapor quality, was increasing until the vapor quality reached approximately 0.4. The critical heat flux (CHF) for the mesh channel was also significantly higher than that of the bare channel in the low vapor quality region. Due to the fact of how the mesh was incorporated into the channels, no pressure drop penalty was identified for the mesh channels. Potential applications for this kind of mesh channel include high heat-flux electronic cooling systems and various energy conversion systems.

Abstract The micro structured surfaces have significant impact on the flow patterns and heat transfer mechanisms during the flow boiling process. The hydrophobic surface promotes bubble nucleation while the hydrophilic surface supplies liquid to a heating surface, thus there is a trade-off between a hydrophobic and a hydrophilic surface. To examine the effect of heterogeneous wetting surface on flow boiling process, an experimental investigation of flow boiling in a rectangular vertical narrow microchannel with the heterogeneous wetting surface was conducted with deionized water as the working fluid. The heat transfer characteristics of flow boiling in the microchannel was studied and the flow pattern was photographed with a high-speed camera. The onset of flow boiling and heat transfer coefficient were discussed with the variation of heatfluxes and mass fluxes, the trends of which were analyzed along with the flow patterns. During the boiling process, the dominated heat transfer mechanism was nucleate boiling, with numerous nucleate sites between the hydrophilic/hydrophobic stripes and on the hydrophobic ones. In the meantime, after the merged bubbles were constrained by the channel walls, it would be difficult for them to expand towards upstream since they were restricted by the contact line between hydrophilic/hydrophobic stripes, thereby reduce the flow instability and achieve remarkable heat transfer performance.

Flow boiling through microchannels is characterized by nucleation and growth of vapor bubbles that fills the entire channel cross-sectional area. As the bubble nucleates and grows inside the microchannel, a thin film of liquid or a microlayer gets trapped between the bubble and the channel walls. The heat transfer mechanism present at the channel walls during flow boiling is studied numerically. These mechanisms are compared to the heat transfer mechanisms present during nucleate boiling and in a moving evaporating meniscus. It is shown that the thermal and the flow fields present inside the microchannels around the bubbles are fundamentally different compared to nucleate boiling or in a moving evaporating meniscus. It is explained that how thin film evaporation is responsible for creating an apparent nucleate boiling heat transfer mechanism inside the microchannels.
