Boiling Characteristics of Refrigerant Mixture Flow in Micro Scale Heat Exchangers Enhanced With Micro-Coils

Flow in three horizontal channels for subcooled and saturated boiling characteristics are reported in this study. An experimental setup composed of heating elements provided heat flux variations on the channels. The heat transfer coefficient was found to be dependent on both the heat flux as well as mass flux levels. Results show that micro-coil inserts enhanced the heat transfer performance over that in smooth channels by 25% as compared to correlations for wire-coil inserts and 30% as compared to correlation for convective boiling process.

Experimental results from single-phase refrigerant mixture flow in smooth and micro-coil enhanced meso-channels are presented. R-407C — a mixture of R-32 (23%)/R-125 (25%)/R-134a (52%) — is used as the working fluid and different micro-coils are used in conjunction with two meso-channels (2.78mm and 3.97 mm) to obtain distinct roughness parameters. The flow was varied over a range of Reynolds numbers and experiments were conducted over a heat flux range of 2 to 11 kW/m2. The heat transfer coefficient was found to be dependent on both the heat flux as well as mass flux levels. Results show that heat transfer characteristics are comparable to R-113, and that micro-coil inserts enhanced the heat transfer performance compared to the performance in smooth meso-channels.

Convective boiling heat transfer coefficients of R-22 were obtained in a flat extruded aluminum tube with Dh = 1.41 mm. The test range covered mass flux from 100 to 600 kg/m2 s, heat flux from 5 to 15 kW/m2 and saturation temperature from 5°C to 15°C. The heat transfer coefficient curve shows a decreasing trend after a certain quality (critical quality). The critical quality decreases as the heat flux increases, and as the mass flux decreases. The early dryout at a high heat flux results in a unique ‘cross-over’ of the heat transfer coefficient curves. The heat transfer coefficient increases as the mass flux increases. At a low quality region, however, the effect of mass flux is not prominent. The heat transfer coefficient increases as the saturation temperature increases. The effect of saturation temperature, however, diminishes as the heat flux decreases. Both the Shah and the Kandlikar correlations underpredict the low mass flux and overpredict the high mass flux data.

A two-dimensional model is developed to numerically study the water flow boiling through a tree-shaped microchannel by VOF method. In this work, the bubble dynamics and flow patterns along the channel are examined. Additionally, the pressure drop, heat transfer performance and the effects of mass flow rate and heat flux on the heat transfer coefficient are analyzed and discussed. The numerical results indicate that, there are three main bubble dynamic behaviors at the wall, namely coalesce-lift-off, coalesce-slide and coalesce-reattachment. At the bifurcation in high branching level, the slug bubbles may coalesce or breakup. The flow patterns of bubbly, bubbly-slug flows occur at low branching level and slug flow occurs at high branching level. The passage of bubbles causes the increasing of fluid temperature and local pressure. Additionally, the pressure drop decreases with the branching level. The flow pattern and channel confinement effect play a vital role in heat transfer performance. The nucleate boiling dominant heat transfer is observed at low branching level, the heat transfer performance is enhanced with increasing branching level from [Formula: see text] to 2. While, at high branching level, the heat transfer performance becomes weaker due to the suppression of nucleate boiling. Moreover, the heat transfer coefficient increases with the mass flow rate and heat flux.

The influence of quality, flow regime, heat flux, and mass flux on the electrohydrodynamic (EHD) enhancement of convective boiling of R-134a in a horizontal smooth tube was investigated in detail. The EHD forces generated significant enhancements in the heat transfer coefficient, but the enhancements were highly dependent on the quality, flow regime, heat flux, and mass flux. The experimental data provided evidence that an optimum EHD enhancement exists for a given set of these variables with a specific electrode design. However, experimental data also provided evidence that the EHD forces can drastically reduce the rate of heat transfer at certain conditions

The heat flux on the receiver tube is non-uniform because of uneven solar flux and receiver structure, which causes overheating and thermal stress failure of receiver and affected safe operations of the Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) system. In order to reduce the temperature difference in receiver tube wall and improve the efficiency of CSP system, the ternary eutectic salt LiF-NaF-KF (46.5-11.5-42 wt.%, hereafter FLiNaK), which has a better high thermal stability than that of nitrate salts at operating temperature of 900 °C, is selected as HTF, and heat transfer performance of FLiNaK in a corrugated receive tube with non-uniform heat flux is simulated by CFD software in the present work. The numerical results reveal that the non-uniform heat flux has a great influence on the temperature distributions of the receive tube and FLiNaK salt. Compared with the result of bare tube, the corrugated tube can not only significantly reduce the temperature difference in tube wall and salt by improving the uniformity of temperature distribution but also enhance the heat transfer of the salt, where the heat transfer coefficient increases with the Reynolds number and heat flux. Moreover, the enhanced effect of the corrugated tube depends on both the pitch and the height of ridges. It is found that the heat transfer coefficient of the salt gets a maximum when the ratio of the height of ridge to the pitch is 0.2. The research presented here may provide guidelines for design optimization of receiver tube in CSP system.

Abstract The paper presents results from an experimental study on refrigerant mixture flow (R-407C) in which the heat transfer coefficient was measured across a range of heat and mass fluxes. Flow characteristics in smooth horizontal mesochannels were measured for two different conditions, 1) subcooled and 2) saturated boiling with diameters of 1.59, 2.78, and 3.97 mm and a length of 50.8 mm in refrigerant mixture (R-407C). Experiments were performed at heat fluxes of 2 and 11 kW/m2 for the subcooled boiling and 15 and 29 kW/m2 for the saturated boiling. The mass flux was varied from 0.45 to 1.55 kg/min and the refrigerant was subcooled to 8°C. The saturated boiling experiments were conducted for ΔTsat = 0 to 27°C. The heat transfer coefficients were found to be dependent on channel size, heat flux, and mass flux variations. For smaller channel diameters, the heat transfer rate significantly increased as compared to larger channel diameters. The results showed an increase of 100% in heat transfer coefficient when compared to traditional and micro-channel boiling characteristics.

The results of our work and a number of foreign studies indicate that the sharp increase in the heat transfer parameters (specific heat flux q and heat transfer coefficient _) at the boiling of nanofluids as compared to the base liquid (water) is due not only and not so much to the increase of the thermal conductivity of the nanofluids, but an intensification of the boiling process caused by a change in the state of the heating surface, its topological and chemical properties (porosity, roughness, wettability). The latter leads to a change in the internal characteristics of the boiling process and the average temperature of the superheated liquid layer. This circumstance makes it possible, on the basis of physical models of the liquids boiling and taking into account the parameters of the surface state (temperature, pressure) and properties of the coolant (the density and heat capacity of the liquid, the specific heat of vaporization and the heat capacity of the vapor), and also the internal characteristics of the boiling of liquids, to calculate the value of specific heat flux q. In this paper, the difference in the mechanisms of heat transfer during the boiling of single-phase (water) and two-phase nanofluids has been studied and a quantitative estimate of the q values for the boiling of the nanofluid is carried out based on the internal characteristics of the boiling process. The satisfactory agreement of the calculated values with the experimental data is a confirmation that the key factor in the growth of the heat transfer intensity at the boiling of nanofluids is indeed a change in the nature and microrelief of the heating surface. AbstractThis paper presents the numerical study of thermal performance factor of Al2O3-Cu/water hybrid nanofluid in circular and non-circular ducts (square and rectangular). Turbulent regime is studied with the Reynolds number ranges from 10000 to 100000. The heat transfer performance and flow behaviour of hybrid nanofluid are investigated, considering the nanofluid volume concentration between 0.1 and 2%. The thermal performance factor of hybrid nanofluid is evaluated in terms of performance evaluation criteria (PEC). This present numerical results are successfully validated with the data from the literature. The results indicate that the heat transfer coefficient and Nusselt number of Al2O3-Cu/water hybrid nanofluid are higher than those of Al2O3/water nanofluid and pure water. However, this heat transfer enhancement is achieved at the expense of an increased pressure drop. The heat transfer coefficient of 2% hybrid nanofluid is approximately 58.6% larger than the value of pure water at the Reynolds number of 10000. For the same concentration and Reynolds number, the pressure drop of hybrid nanofluid is 4.79 times higher than the pressure drop of water. The heat transfer performance is the best in the circular pipe compared to the non-circular ducts, but its pressure drop increment is also the largest. The hybrid nanofluid helps to improve the problem of low heat transfer characteristic in the non-circular ducts. In overall, the hybrid nanofluid flow in circular and non-circular ducts are reported to possess better thermal performance factor than that of water. The maximum attainable PEC is obtained by 2% hybrid nanofluid in the square duct at the Reynolds Number of 60000. This study can help to determine which geometry is efficient for the heat transfer application of hybrid nanofluid.
