Cloud manufacturing (CMfg) is a new manufacturing paradigm designed to enable manufacturing enterprise to share their resources and capabilities. Prior to any real-life change in the system, for CMfg it is important to anticipate and optimize the response of the system through simulation. Digital Twins (DT) is a simulation method for this paradigm that is different from existing simulation methods in two ways. It is a virtual copy of the system containing all the components and can connect to the controller in real time. The goal of this work is to develop a DT for an educational manufacturing cell. The educational manufacturing cell is a FESTO Reconfigurable Mechatronics System (RMS). The cell has four stations that uses pallets to transport the product on the conveyor belt and assembles a part of the product. The Siemens Process Simulate: TECNOMATIX, was used to create the DT of the system. The system is modeled in a CAD program and then imported into TECNOMATIX Process Simulate, where it is programmed to replicate the processes.

This research investigates how contingency is currently calculated in project budgets within the building industry. This is an important aspect to consider as a large proportion of construction projects are significantly over-budget. The study presents three non-simulation methods and one simulation method for calculating cost contingency following the results of a forthcoming journal paper. These methods are applied against a case study project in attempt to highlight the most reliable method, and to create a methodology that will be useful to the industry. This paper identifies that the traditional fixed percentage approach is not sufficient and suggests that this could be one of the main reasons why construction projects are over budget. While it is unclear which method is the most reliable, this study provides a focus for future research into reliability and utilisation of contingency methods in the building industry. The research demonstrates that current practice needs to change to reduce the large number of construction projects that run over budget.

Existing numerical simulation methods tend to neglect some details of shield tunnelling and the cyclic shear characteristics of pile-soil interface. In this paper, an elaborate simulation method is firstly proposed to simulate the advancing of shield machines according to the details of shield tunnelling. Then an improved constitutive model for pile-soil interface, which can factually consider the cyclic shear characteristics, is also developed. Finally, through a case study, it can be found that the proposed simulation method can provide reliable estimation for this problem, and it is important to factually consider the cyclic shear characteristics of pile-soil interface.

The contemporary market creates a demand for continuous improvement of production, service, and management processes. Increasingly advanced IT technologies help designers to meet this demand, as they allow them to abandon classic design and design-testing methods in favor of techniques that do not require the use of real-life systems and thus significantly reduce the costs and time of implementing new solutions. This is particularly important when re-engineering production and logistics processes in existing production companies, where physical testing is often infeasible as it would require suspension of production for the testing period. In this article, we showed how the Digital Twin technology can be used to test the operating environment of an autonomous mobile robot (AMR). In particular, the concept of the Digital Twin was used to assess the correctness of the design assumptions adopted for the early phase of the implementation of an AMR vehicle in a company’s production hall. This was done by testing and improving the case of a selected intralogistics task in a potentially “problematic” part of the shop floor with narrow communication routes. Three test scenarios were analyzed. The results confirmed that the use of digital twins could accelerate the implementation of automated intralogistics systems and reduce its costs.

Cloud manufacturing (CMfg) aims to realize the full-scale sharing, free circulation and transaction, and on-demand use of various manufacturing resources and capabilities in the form of manufacturing services. During the whole product life-cycle, the number of manufacturing services is huge, and services are highly dynamic and changeful. Without the effective operation and technical support of manufacturing service management, the implementation and aim of CMfg could not be achieved. In this paper, a multi-layer model of manufacturing service is proposed for a job shop in cloud manufacturing, in order to solve the description problem of different manufacturing services from different level view, e.g. machine level, process level and shop level. Consequently, a hypergraph-based network model of manufacturing service is developed, so as to facilitate the management of different services during the whole production process in job shop. A case study and some applications of the proposed model for supporting the manufacturing services management to practical manufacturing system are studied, to demonstrate the feasibility and efficiency of such model.

AbstractPhotogrammetry is a promising set of methods for generating photorealistic 3D models of physical objects and structures. Such methods may rely solely on camera-captured photographs or include additional sensor data. Digital twins are digital replicas of physical objects and structures. Photogrammetry is an opportune approach for generating 3D models for the purpose of preparing digital twins. At a sufficiently high level of quality, digital twins provide effective archival representations of physical objects and structures and become effective substitutes for engineering inspections and surveying. While photogrammetric techniques are well-established, insights about effective methods for interacting with such models in virtual reality remain underexplored. We report the results of a qualitative engineering case study in which we asked six domain experts to carry out engineering measurement tasks in an immersive environment using bimanual gestural input coupled with gaze-tracking. The qualitative case study revealed that gaze-supported bimanual interaction of photogrammetric 3D models is a promising modality for domain experts. It allows the experts to efficiently manipulate and measure elements of the 3D model. To better allow designers to support this modality, we report design implications distilled from the feedback from the domain experts.

Abstract Simulators in the petroleum industry have been used mainly for training purposes even though they present different applications like digital twins. In this regard, a simulator must approximate the well environment to reflect operative actions and reactions. This paper describes a case study where a well control simulator has been developed to be used as a digital twin where operators may try different scenarios in a safe environment before applying them to the physical well. To cover all aspects of the operation, the simulator should simulate surface equipment as well as a downhole environment. Numerical modeling techniques and hydraulic simulators are used to design the well response to operations. Different scenarios were established to cover most of the possible downhole problems and equipment malfunctions including electrical and hydraulic failures. The study compares a pre-determined set of KPIs common to three different types of simulation: well control, procedural and an integration of both. The target of the study is to collect the data resulting from the use of the simulator while it replicates a real-life situation. This virtual model of the rig and the well can be used to calibrate the main drilling parameters like SPM, RPM and WOB. The digital twin is also used to optimize operational procedures and improve performance and efficiency of rig crews as well as reduce their response time to possible problems. The results show an increase in performance when the knowledge of the rig is combined with the downhole feedback experience. This proves that training of the crew by reproducing their own equipment allows for a major jump in readiness and faster response with minimal mistakes. In addition, conducting the operation virtually allows the crew to uncover any possible issues before tackling the physical well. This in turn helps to reduce errors and safeguard both well and equipment integrity. This paper discusses the integration of the use of downhole environment behavior into a complete digital twin which will play an important role for providing a source of data for regular case studies concerning well control, Maintenance, Scheduling and other critical decisions. This new method candidates itself as a major contender for the future of simulation in the drilling business and shows the importance of that for reducing risks and errors.

Interest in offering Entrepreneurship Education (EE) to all kinds of university students is increasing. Therefore, universities are increasing the number of entrepreneurship courses intended for students from different fields of study and with different education levels. Through a single case study of the Contamination Lab of Turin (CLabTo), we suggest how EE may be taught to all kinds of university students. We have combined design methods with EE to create a practical-oriented entrepreneurship course which allows students to work in transdisciplinary teams through a learning-by-doing approach on real-life projects. Professors from different departments have been included to create a multidisciplinary environment. We have drawn on programme assessment data, including pre- and post-surveys. Overall, we have found a positive effect of the programme on the students’ entrepreneurial skills. However, when the data was broken down according to the students’ fields of study and education levels, mixed results emerged.

Abstract This article investigates the suitability of traditional and participatory planning approaches in managing the process of spatial development of existing housing estates, based on the case study of Warsaw’s Ursynów Północny district. The basic assumption of the article is that due to lack of government schemes targeted at the restructuring of large housing estates, it is the business environment that drives spatial transformations and through that shapes the development of participation. Consequently the article focuses on the reciprocal relationships between spatial transformations and participatory practices. Analysis of Ursynów Północny against the background of other estates indicates that it presents more endangered qualities than issues to be tackled. Therefore the article focuses on the potential of the housing estate and good practices which can be tracked throughout its lifetime. The paper focuses furthermore on real-life processes, addressing the issue of privatisation, development pressure, formal planning procedures and participatory budgeting. In the conclusion it attempts to interpret the existing spatial structure of the estate as a potential framework for a participatory approach.

ABSTRACT This case originates from a real-life business situation and illustrates the application of impairment tests in accordance with IFRS and U.S. GAAP. In the first part of the case study, students examine conceptual questions of impairment tests under IFRS and U.S. GAAP with respect to applicable accounting standards, definitions, value concepts, and frequency of application. In addition, the case encourages students to discuss the impairment regime from an economic point of view. The second part of the instructional resource continues to provide instructors with the flexibility of applying U.S. GAAP and/or IFRS when students are asked to test a long-lived asset for impairment and, if necessary, allocate any potential impairment. This latter part demonstrates that impairment tests require professional judgment that students are to exercise in the case.
