Chip Design for Coupled Nonlinear Structronic Thermo-Electro-Elastic/Control Systems

The objective of this study is to demonstrate the feasibility that a fully-coupled nonlinear piezo(electric)-thermoelastic/control structronic systems can be represented by a single micro-electronic chip. This non-volatile chip is a poTable.lle miniature hardware that serves as a design standard for future calibration and diagnosis of the original “large-scale” structronic system and it can be used anywhere after any catastrophic disruption in extreme hostile environments. Distributed control of a nonlinear structronic beam system (i.e., an elastic beam laminated with distributed sensors/actuators and coupled with control electronics) subjected to mechanical and temperature excitations has been investigated recently. This study is to design an integrated electronic circuit chip encompassing the complete piezothermoelastic and control behavior of the nonlinear structronic beam system. The fully coupled nonlinear beam equations are first discretized into a number of “elements” and each element can be implemented by an active circuit block including operational amplifiers, resistors, capacitors, and other nonlinear multipliers. Signals from the integrated circuit chip of the coupled nonlinear piezothermoelastic beam system are favorably compared with analytical solutions.

Ferroelectric ceramic thin films fit naturally into the burgeoning field of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). Microelectromechanical systems combine traditional Si integrated-circuit (IC) electronics with micromechanical sensing and actuating components. The term MEMS has become synonymous with many types of microfabricated devices such as accelerometers, infrared detectors, flow meters, pumps, motors, and mechanical components. These devices have lateral dimensions in the range of 10 μm–10 mm. The ultimate goal of MEMS is a self-contained system of interrelated sensing and actuating devices together with signal processing and control electronics on a common substrate, most often Si. Since fabrication involves methods common to the IC industry, MEMS can be mass-produced. Commercial applications for MEMS already span biomedical (e.g., blood-pressure sensors), manufacturing (e.g., microflow controllers), information processing (e.g., displays), and automotive (e.g., accelerometers) industries. More applications are projected in consumer electronics, manufacturing control, communications, and aerospace. Materials for MEMS include traditional microelectronic materials (e.g., Si, SiO2, Si3N4, polyimide, Pt, Al) as well as nontraditional ones (e.g., ferroelectric ceramics, shapememory alloys, chemical-sensing materials). The superior piezoelectric and pyroelectric properties of ferroelectric ceramics make them ideal materials for microactuators and microsensors.

Non-contact wireless actuation offers many advantages to precision control, as compared with conventional hard-wired actuation mechanisms. High-energy laser or ultraviolet lights irradiating on photostrictive materials can induce a photodeformation process involving two fundamental effects: 1) the photovoltaic effect and 2) the converse piezoelectric effect. This photodeformation process transforms photonic energy to mechanical strain/stress that can be directly used for actuation and control applications. With specific design configurations, the photodeformation process of photostrictive actuators can induce various control forces and moments applied to precision manipulation and control of mechatronic and structronic systems. In this study, fundamental photodeformation coupling mechanisms among photo-thermo-electromechanical/control fields are investigated and parametric evaluation of various design parameters of a hybrid photostrictive/elastic beam is conducted. A mathematical model for a laminated beam with segmented photostrictive actuators is defined, followed by photodeformation induced modal control forces and moments of segmented actuators. Characteristics of actuation and control effectiveness of distributed photostrictive actuators at various locations, natural modes and illumination intensities are analyzed in case studies. The most effective actuator location(s) for controlling the first four beam modes are illustrated. Finally, with scheduling light irradiations on various photostrictive actuators, one can control multiple beam modes, allowed by control electronics and material response.

Interference in Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) predominantly affects the performance of the WSN. Energy consumption in WSN is one of the greatest concerns in the current generation. This work presents an approach for interference measurement and interference mitigation in point to point network. The nodes are distributed in the network and interference is measured by grouping the nodes in the region of a specific diameter. Hence this approach is scalable and isextended to large scale WSN. Interference is measured in two stages. In the first stage, interference is overcome by allocating time slots to the node stations in Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) fashion. The node area is split into larger regions and smaller regions. The time slots are allocated to smaller regions in TDMA fashion. A TDMA based time slot allocation algorithm is proposed in this paper to enable reuse of timeslots with minimal interference between smaller regions. In the second stage, the network density and control parameter is introduced to reduce interference in a minor level within smaller node regions. The algorithm issimulated and the system is tested with varying control parameter. The node-level interference and the energy dissipation at nodes are captured by varying the node density of the network. The results indicate that the proposed approach measures the interference and mitigates with minimal energy consumption at nodes and with less overhead transmission.

Today, more than forty countries of the world are engaged in the development of military-purpose robots. A number of unique mobile robots with a wide range of capabilities are already being used by combat and intelligence units of the Armed forces of the developed world countries to conduct battlefield intelligence and support tactical groups. At present, the issue of using the latest information technology in the field of military robotics is thoroughly investigated, and the creation of highly effective information management systems in the land-mobile robotic complexes has acquired a new phase associated with the use of distributed information and sensory systems and consists in the transition from application of separate sensors and devices to the construction of modular information subsystems, which provide the availability of various data sources and complex methods of information processing. The purpose of the article is to investigate the ways to increase the autonomy of the land-mobile robotic complexes using in a non-deterministic conditions of modern combat. Relevance of researches is connected with the necessity of creation of highly effective information and control systems in the perspective robotic means for the needs of Land Forces of Ukraine. The development of the Armed Forces of Ukraine management system based on the criteria adopted by the EU and NATO member states is one of the main directions of increasing the effectiveness of the use of forces (forces), which involves achieving the principles and standards necessary for Ukraine to become a member of the EU and NATO. The inherent features of achieving these criteria will be the transition to a reduction of tasks of the combined-arms units and the large-scale use of high-precision weapons and land remote-controlled robotic devices. According to the views of the leading specialists in the field of robotics, the automation of information subsystems and components of the land-mobile robotic complexes can increase safety, reliability, error-tolerance and the effectiveness of the use of robotic means by standardizing the necessary actions with minimal human intervention, that is, a significant increase in the autonomy of the land-mobile robotic complexes for the needs of Land Forces of Ukraine.

In order to improve the information management of the modern digital agriculture, combined several modern digital agriculture technologies, namely wireless sensor network (WSN), global positioning system (GPS), geographic information system (GIS) and general packet radio service (GPRS), and applied them to the information collection and intelligent control process of the modern digital agriculture. Combining the advantage of the local multi-channel information collection and the low-power wireless transmission of WSN, the stable and low cost long-distance communication and data transmission ability of GPRS, the high-precision positioning technology of the DGPS positioning and the large-scale field information layer-management technology of GIS, such a hybrid technology combination is applied to the large-scale field information and intelligent management. In this study, wireless sensor network routing nodes are disposed in the sub-area of field. These nodes have GPS receiver modules and the electric control mechanism, and are relative positioned by GPS. They can real-time monitor the field information and control the equipment for the field application. When the GPS position information and other collected field information are measured, the information can be remotely transmitted to PC by GPRS. Then PC can upload the information to the GIS management software. All the field information can be classified into different layers in GIS and shown on the GIS map based on their GPS position. Moreover, we have developed remote control software based on GIS. It can send the control commands through GPRS to the nodes which have control modules; and then we can real-time manage and control the field application. In conclusion, the unattended automatic wireless intelligent technology for the field information collection and control can effectively utilize hardware resources, improve the field information intelligent management and reduce the information and intelligent cost.

In a large-scale epidemic, such as the novel coronavirus pneumonia (COVID-19), there is huge demand for a variety of medical supplies, such as medical masks, ventilators, and sickbeds. Resources from civilian medical services are often not sufficient for fully satisfying all of these demands. Resources from military medical services, which are normally reserved for military use, can be an effective supplement to these demands. In this paper, we formulate a problem of integrated civilian-military scheduling of medical supplies for epidemic prevention and control, the aim of which is to simultaneously maximize the overall satisfaction rate of the medical supplies and minimize the total scheduling cost, while keeping a minimum ratio of medical supplies reservation for military use. We propose a multi-objective water wave optimization (WWO) algorithm in order to efficiently solve this problem. Computational results on a set of problem instances constructed based on real COVID-19 data demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

The UK’s COVID-19 epidemic during early 2020 was one of world’s largest and unusually well represented by virus genomic sampling. Here we reveal the fine-scale genetic lineage structure of this epidemic through analysis of 50,887 SARS-CoV-2 genomes, including 26,181 from the UK sampled throughout the country’s first wave of infection. Using large-scale phylogenetic analyses, combined with epidemiological and travel data, we quantify the size, spatio-temporal origins and persistence of genetically-distinct UK transmission lineages. Rapid fluctuations in virus importation rates resulted in >1000 lineages; those introduced prior to national lockdown tended to be larger and more dispersed. Lineage importation and regional lineage diversity declined after lockdown, while lineage elimination was size-dependent. We discuss the implications of our genetic perspective on transmission dynamics for COVID-19 epidemiology and control.

In the last couple of decades, terahertz (THz) technologies, which lie in the frequency gap between the infrared and microwaves, have been greatly enhanced and investigated due to possible opportunities in a plethora of THz applications, such as imaging, security, and wireless communications. Photonics has led the way to the generation, modulation, and detection of THz waves such as the photomixing technique. In tandem with these investigations, researchers have been exploring ways to use silicon photonics technologies for THz applications to leverage the cost-effective large-scale fabrication and integration opportunities that it would enable. Although silicon photonics has enabled the implementation of a large number of optical components for practical use, for THz integrated systems, we still face several challenges associated with high-quality hybrid silicon lasers, conversion efficiency, device integration, and fabrication. This paper provides an overview of recent progress in THz technologies based on silicon photonics or hybrid silicon photonics, including THz generation, detection, phase modulation, intensity modulation, and passive components. As silicon-based electronic and photonic circuits are further approaching THz frequencies, one single chip with electronics, photonics, and THz functions seems inevitable, resulting in the ultimate dream of a THz electronic–photonic integrated circuit.
