Nonlinear Axial and Transverse Oscillation and Control of a PZT Laminated Distributed Structronic System

Abstract Piezoelectric laminated distributed systems have broad applications in many new smart structures and structronic systems. As the shape control becomes an essential issue in practical applications, the nonlinear large deformation has to be considered, and thus, the geometrical nonlinearity has to be incorporated. Two electromechanical partial differential equations, one in the axial direction and the other in the transverse direction, are derived for the nonlinear PZT laminated beam model. The conventional approach is to neglect the axial oscillation and distributed sensing and control of the distributed laminated beam is evaluated, excluding the effect of axial oscillation. In this paper, influence of the axial displacement to the dynamics and distributed control effect is evaluated. Analysis results reveal that the axial displacement, indeed, has significant influence to the dynamic and distributed control responses of the nonlinear distributed PZT laminated beam structronics systems.

Abstract Paraboloidal shells of revolution are commonly used in communication systems, precision opto-mechanical systems and aerospace structures. This study is to investigate the precision distributed control effectiveness of paraboloidal shells laminated with segmented actuator patches. Mathematical models of the paraboloidal shells laminated with distributed actuator layers subjected to mechanical, temperature, and control forces are presented first, followed by formulations of distributed control forces with their contributing meridional/circumferential membrane and bending control components using an assumed mode shape function. Studies of actuator placements, control forces, contributing components, and normalized control authorities of paraboloidal shells are carried out. These forces and membrane/bending components basically exhibit distinct modal characteristics influenced by shell geometries and other design parameters. Analyses suggest that the membrane contributed components dominate the overall control effect. Locations with larger normalized forces indicate the areas with high control efficiencies, i.e., larger induced control force per unit actuator area. With limited actuators, placing actuators at those locations would lead to the maximal control effects.

Linear dynamics and distributed control of piezoelectric laminated continua have been intensively investigated in recent years. In this study, dynamics, electromechanical couplings, and control of thermal buckling of a nonlinear piezoelectric laminated circular plate with an initial large deformation are investigated. It is assumed that the transverse nonlinear component is much more prominent than the other two in-plane components—the von Karman type geometrical nonlinearity. In addition, the piezoelectric layers are uniformly distributed on the top and bottom surfaces of the circular plate. Accordingly, the control effect is introduced via an equivalent control moment on the circumference. Dynamic equations and boundary conditions including the elastic and piezoelectric couplings are formulated, and solutions are derived. Active control of plate’s nonlinear deflections, thermal buckling, and natural frequencies using high control voltages are studied, and their nonlinear effects are evaluated.

Pain scales classify the severity of pain inflicted on laboratory animals from little or none up to severe. A pain scale as part of public policy serves beneficial purposes that promote animal welfare. It can be used to educate people about the two alternatives of refinement and replacement, and the need to reduce animal pain. Furthermore, a pain scale has practical applications: 1) in review procedures for animal welfare concerns; 2) in developing policies on the use of animals in education; and 3) as a basis for collecting national data on animal experimentation, so that meaningful data can be collected on trends in reduction and control in animal pain. So far, only a few countries (including Sweden, the Netherlands, Canada and New Zealand) have adopted pain scales as part of their public policy. Most countries, including the United States, have not yet done so. The history of the development and adoption of pain scales by various countries is described and the case is presented for wider adoption of a pain scale in countries not currently using one.

The air precooling system heat exchange process is a complex control system with features such as: nonlinear, lag and random interference. So choose Generalized Predictive Control Algorithm that has low model dependence, good robustness and control effect, as well as easy to implement. But due to the large amount of calculation of traditional generalized predictive control and can't juggle quickness and overshoot problem, an improved generalized predictive control algorithm is proposed, then carry out the MATLAB simulation, the experimental results show that the algorithm can not only greatly reduce the amount of computation, but also can restrain the overshoot and its rapidity.

We investigate the percolation phase transitions in both the static and growing networks where the nodes are sampled according to a weighted function with a tunable parameter [Formula: see text]. For the static network, i.e. the number of nodes is constant during the percolation process, the percolation phase transition can evolve from continuous to discontinuous as the value of [Formula: see text] is tuned. Based on the properties of the weighted function, three typical values of [Formula: see text] are analyzed. The model becomes the classical Erdös–Rényi (ER) network model at [Formula: see text]. When [Formula: see text], it is shown that the percolation process generates a weakly discontinuous phase transition where the order parameter exhibits an extremely abrupt transition with a significant jump in large but finite system. For [Formula: see text], the cluster size distribution at the lower pseudo-transition point does not obey the power-law behavior, indicating a strongly discontinuous phase transition. In the case of growing network, in which the collection of nodes is increasing, a smoother continuous phase transition emerges at [Formula: see text], in contrast to the weakly discontinuous phase transition of the static network. At [Formula: see text], on the other hand, probability modulation effect shows that the nature of strongly discontinuous phase transition remains the same with the static network despite the node arrival even in the thermodynamic limit. These percolation properties of the growing networks could provide useful reference for network intervention and control in practical applications in consideration of the increasing size of most actual networks.

Practical applications of knowledge management are hindered by a lack of linkage between the accepted data-information-knowledge hierarchy with using pragmatic approaches. Specifically, the authors seek to clarify the use of the tacit-explicit dichotomy with a deductive synthesis of complementary concepts. The authors review appropriate segments of the KM/OL literature with an emphasis on the SECI model of Nonaka and Takeuchi. Looking beyond equating the sharing of knowledge with mere socialization, the authors deduce from more recent developments a knowledge creation, nurturing and control framework. Based on a cyclic and upward-spiraling data-information-knowledge structure, the authors' proposed model affords top managers and their consultants opportunities for capturing, debating and storing richer information – as well as monitoring their progress and controlling their learning process.

The Active Disturbance Rejection Control (ADRC) prefers the cascaded integral system for a convenient design or better control effect and takes it as a typical form. However, the state variables of practical system do not necessarily have a cascaded integral relationship. Therefore, this paper proposes an algebraic substitution method and its structure, which can convert a noncascaded integral system of PID control into a cascaded integral form. The adjusting parameters of the ADRC controller are also demonstrated. Meanwhile, a numerical example and the oscillation control of a flexible arm are demonstrated to show the conversion, controller design, and control effect. The converted system is proved to be more suitable for a direct ADRC control. In addition, for the numerical example, its control effect for the converted system is compared with a PID controller under different disturbances. The result shows that the converted system can achieve a better control effect under the ADRC than that of a PID. The theory is a guide before practice. This converting method not only solves the ADRC control problem of some noncascaded integral systems in theory and simulation but also expands the application scope of the ADRC method.

Automatic roadways on gob-side entry retaining with no-pillars are used for longwall mining technology. The mining technology with no-pillars can recover coal pillar resources and reduce the amount and cost of roadway excavations. Automatic roadway technology for cutting roofs by combined support on gob-side entry retaining with no-pillars is adopted for the condition of thick immediate roof and medium-thick coal seam mining, cutting off the immediate roof and the main roof on the gob by combined support. The fractured roof forms gangue blocks to fill the gob and loads the overlying strata. The gangue control system is placed on the roadside, which controls the caving gangue to form a gangue rib. In this paper, the viewpoints and key technologies (the roof-cutting technology, the reinforcement and support technology, the gangue rib control technology, and the auxiliary support technology) of automatic roadway technology for cutting roofs by combined support on the gob-side entry retaining with no-pillars are introduced. Furthermore, the formation and control process are explained. The numerical simulation is used to simulate and analyze the roof hanging and the roof cutting structures. In addition, a field engineering test is performed. The field test shows that automatic roadway technology for cutting roofs by combined support on gob-side entry retaining with no-pillars is feasible. This process uses construction techniques and technologies to meet on-site production needs. The combined support has high resistance strength and is shrinkable. In engineering applications, the combined support has a low damage rate. The deformation of the automatic roadway with gob-side entry retaining is small, and the control effect is significant.
