Abstract ENTRAP is a European organisation grouping nuclear waste quality checking laboratories from different EU member states. The main objectives of ENTRAP are information exchange and harmonisation between the laboratories. ENTRAP works on different aspects of quality checking of nuclear waste packages. The working items are treated in different working groups and one of these working groups is WGA, dealing with non-destructive assay techniques for waste packages. This paper discusses the main achievements made by WGA, and gives a summary of the state-of-the-practice of assay techniques used for quality checking of nuclear waste packages in the different member laboratories.

Acoustic emission (AE) measurements are one of many non-destructive testing methods which had found applications in defects detection in machines. This paper reviews the state of the art in AE based condition monitoring with particular emphasis on rotating and reciprocating machinery applications. Advantages and limitations of the AE technique in comparison to other condition monitoring techniques in detecting common machinery faults are also discussed.

At present the need of nondestructive testing of rope bridges state appears often. Modern maintenance trends using non-destructive checking allow to detect the state of these materials in service without breaking their integrity. From the point of view of so far used non-destructive testing methods the area of cable end is not accessible. The magnetic properties research of these materials and the subsequent design of new structures for scanning elements will enable non-destructive monitoring of the state of the ropes steel material of static constructions, especially their anchoring. The article aims to present the results from tracking of the magnetic flux around the cable end and signal runs from particular designed and investigated scanning elements placed above artificial defects created closely to the cable end.

A computer model and the results of a numerical experiment for a sensitive element on a planar mushroom-shaped metamaterial with cells of the “Maltese cross” type are presented. The proposed electrodynamic structure is shown to be applicable for nondestructive testing of geometric and electrophysical parameters of technological media, as well as searching for inhomogeneities in them. Resonant frequency shift and change of the attenuation coefficient value of the structure serve as informative parameters.
