An Experimental Study of Normal-Hexadecane and Iso-Dodecane Binary Fuel Blends in a Military Diesel Engine

The molecular composition of new hydrotreated renewable fuels consists of both straight chain and branched alkanes. These new fuels do not contain aromatic or cyclo-paraffinic hydro-carbon compounds which are regularly seen in conventional petroleum fuels. Both experimental and modeling work has shown that straight chain alkanes have shorter ignition delays (e.g. higher cetane number) as compared to branched alkanes. In order to better understand the effects of branched and straight chain alkanes fuels in diesel engines, an experimental study was pursued using binary blends of iso-dodecane (iC12H26 with abbreviation: iC12) and normal-hexadecane (nC16H34 with abbreviation nC16) in a military diesel engine (AM General HMMWV ‘Humvee’ engine). Mixtures of 50% iC12 with 50% nC16 as well as 25% iC12 with 75% nC16 were compared to 100% nC16 (cetane) fueled engine operation across the entire speed-load range. Higher nC16 fuel content operation resulted in modestly earlier fuel injection events and combustion phasing that delievered slightly worse engine brake performance (torque and fuel consumption). Interestingly, ignition delay and overall burn durations were relatively insensitive to the binary blends tested. The significantly different physical properties of iC12 relative to nC16 are believed to affect the fuel injection event leading to later fuel injection with increasing iC12 content. Later injection into a hotter chamber mitigates the lower cetane number of the higher iC12 content fuel blends.

This paper reports the results of a study to determine a ternary blend of oxygenated additives for reduction in smoke emissions in diesel engines. Initial studies on binary blends established twenty percent (by volume) n-butanol-diesel blend (B20) as the base fuel. Subsequently observations were taken with Nitromethane (NM)-n-butanol-diesel blends. It was observed that binary blends are not able to reduce smoke and other emissions beyond the optimum blending ratio (B20). Also, Cetane Number of binary blends was found to be lowered due to poor Cetane Number of n-butanol. It is therefore necessary to add another additive which helps in reducing smoke substantially and improve Cetane Number of blend without affecting the other parameters. The study found that blending of one percent of NM by volume gives best results for smoke reduction. The overall effect of this ternary blend is to reduce the smoke and NOx up to 69.76% and 5.4% respectively. It is concluded that NM-n-butanol-diesel blend would be a potential fuel for smoke reduction in diesel engines.

The article considers and solves the problems of adapting the mathematical models, used in calculating operational characteristics of diesel engines burning mineral diesel oil, to engines converted to RME biofuels. The analysis of mathematical models of calculating the main technical and economic characteristics of diesel engines as well as the parameters of the in-cylinder process and the concentration of toxic substances in the exhaust gases is performed. The need for adjusting the calculation algorithms is also demonstrated. The computer programs based on single-zone thermodynamic models are used in the research. The programs of mathematical modelling are modified, i.e. supplemented with the algorithm for calculating energy characteristics of the combustion products (e.g. specific heat capacity, internal heat, the lower calorific value, etc.). Based on the computer programs, modified for examining diesel engines burning biofuels, the computer-aided mathematical modelling experiment is carried out. The results of modelling are compared with the data obtained in testing the diesel engine 1A41. The mathematical modelling performed demonstrates the accuracy acceptable for solving practical problems: the difference between the obtained calculation results and diesel engine testing data for the load range of (1.0÷0.5) Pi nom does not exceed ± 5÷7%. Higher accuracy of modelling the characteristics of diesel engines, operating in the low- and medium-load modes, may be accounted for by the adjustment of the algorithm for calculating the induction period and the on-set phase of fuel injection. Santrauka Publikacijoje pateikti dyzelio darbo proceso ir eksploatacinių rodiklių skaičiavimo matematinių modelių tobulinimo rezultatai, siekiant matematinius modelius pritaikyti dyzeliui dirbant riebiųjų rūgščių metilesterių, taip pat RME, biodegalais. Atlikta skaičiavimo algoritmų analizė ir pagrįsti pagrindiniai jų tobulinimo aspektai. Sukurtas kompiuterinis programinis modelis, skirtas darbinio kūno dyzelio cilindre energiniams parametrams skaičiuoti (specifinei šilumai, vidinei energijai), dyzeliui dirbant plačiąja elementinės cheminės sudėties biodegalų gama. Atliktas 1A41 dyzelio techninių ir ekonominių bei ekologinių rodiklių modeliavimas kompiuteriu, naudojant patobulintus matematinius modelius. Parodytas gautų rezultatų, pakankamų praktiniams uždaviniams spręsti, tikslumas: dyzeliui dirbant artimos nominaliosios apkrovos režimais (1,0÷0,5) Pi nom skirtumas tarp skaičiavimo ir dyzelio motorinių tyrimų rezultatų neviršija ±5÷7%. Dyzeliui dirbant mažos apkrovos režimu, matematinio modeliavimo rezultatų adekvatumo didinimas susijęs su kuro įpurškimo fazės bei savaiminio užsiliepsnojimo indukcijos periodo skaičiavimo algoritmo tobulinimu. Резюме Рассмотрены и решены задачи адаптации математических моделей расчета показателей дизеля при переводе их работы с минерального дизелина на биодизелины метилового эфира рапсового масла (МЭРМ). Выполнен анализ и дано обоснование направлений доработки расчетных алгоритмов ряда однозонных термодинамических математических моделей, используемых в практике исследования эксплуатационных показателей, параметров индикаторного процесса и эмиссии токсичных компонентов в выхлопных газах дизелей. В форме программного модуля составлен алгоритм расчета энергетических параметров рабочего тела в цилиндре (удельной теплоемкости, теплоты сгорания, внутренней энергии) для топлив с широким элементарным химическим составом. С использованием доработанных компьютерных программ выполнен широкий расчетный эксперимент и сопоставлены его результаты с данными моторных стендовых испытаний одноцилиндрового отсека дизеля 1А41. Показана приемлемая для решения практических задач точность математического моделирования: для нагрузочных режимов (1÷0,5) Pmi расхождения расчетных и экспериментальных значений параметров работы дизеля не превышают ±5÷7%. Повышение качества моделирования показателей дизеля на режимах средних и малых нагрузок связано с уточнением алгоритма расчета периода индукции и фазы начала видимого горения топлива в цилиндре.

The paper shows some ways to improve the environmental characteristics of a diesel engine using gaseous hydrocarbon fuel and operating the engine in a gas-diesel cycle mode. Some possibilities to reduce toxic components of exhaust gases in a gas-diesel engine operating on liquefi ed propane-butane mixtures have been studied. Experiments carried out in a wide range of load from 10 to 100% and speed from 1400 to 2000 rpm showed that the gas-diesel engine provides a suffi ciently high level of diesel fuel replacement with gas hydrocarbon fuel. The authors indicate some eff ective ways to reduce the toxicity of exhaust gases. The engine power should be adjusted by the simultaneous supply of fuel, gas and throttling the air charge in the intake manifold. This method enriches the fi rst combusting portions to reduce nitrogen oxides and maintains the depletion of the main charge within the fl ammability limits of the gas-air charge to reduce carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons. The authors found that when the engine operates in a gas-diesel cycle mode, the power change provides a decrease in nitrogen oxide emissions of gas-diesel fuel only due to gas supply in almost the entire load range as compared to the pure diesel. At high loads (more than 80%) stable engine operation is ensured up to 90% of diesel fuel replaced by gas. Even at 10% of diesel fuel used the concentration of nitrogen oxides decreases by at least 15…20% as compared with a diesel engine in the entire load range. However, there is an increased emission of hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide in the exhaust gases. Further experimental studies have shown that optimization of the gas diesel regulation can reduce the mass emission of nitrogen oxides contained in exhaust gases in 2…3 times and greatly reduce the emission of incomplete combustion products – carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons.

For economic and social development of any country energy is one of the most essential requirements. Continuously increasing price of crude petroleum fuels in the present days coupled with alarming emissions and stringent emission regulations has led to growing attention towards use of alternative fuels like vegetable oils, alcoholic and gaseous fuels for diesel engine applications. Use of such fuels can ease the burden on the economy by curtailing the fuel imports. Diesel engines are highly efficient and the main problems associated with them is their high smoke and NOx emissions.  Hence there is an urgent need to promote the use of alternative fuels in place of high speed diesel (HSD) as substitute. India has a large agriculture base that can be used as a feed stock to obtain newer fuel which is renewable and sustainable. Accordingly Uppage oil methyl ester (UOME) biodiesel was selected as an alternative fuel. Use of biodiesels in diesel engines fitted with mechanical fuel injection systems has limitation on the injector opening pressure (300 bar). CRDI system can overcome this drawback by injecting fuel at very high pressures (1500-2500 bar) and is most suitable for biodiesel fuels which are high viscous. This paper presents the performance and emission characteristics of a CRDI diesel engine fuelled with UOME biodiesel at different injection timings and injection pressures. From the experimental evidence it was revealed that UOME biodiesel yielded overall better performance with reduced emissions at retarded injection timing of -10° BTDC in CRDI mode of engine operation.

Nerium methyl ester, an esterified biofuel, has an excellent cetane number and a reasonable calorific value. It closely resembles the behaviour of diesel. However, being a fuel of different origin, the standard design limits of a diesel engine is not suitable for Nerium methyl ester (NME). Therefore, in this work, a set of design and operational parameters are studied to find out the optimum performance of Nerium methyl ester run diesel engine. This work targets at finding the effects of the engine design parameter viz. fuel injection pressure (IP) on the performance with regard to specific fuel consumption (SFC), brake thermal efficiency (BTHE) and emissions of CO, CO2, HC, NOxwith N20 as fuel. Comparison of performance and emission was done for different values of injection pressure to find best possible condition for operating engine with NME. For small sized direct injection constant speed engines used for agricultural applications, the optimum injection pressure was found as 240bar.Methyl esters from Nerium, with properties close to diesel; show better performance and emission characteristics. Hence Nerium (N20) blend can be used in existing diesel engines without compromising the engine performance. Diesel (25%) thus saved will greatly help the interests of railways in meeting the demand for fuel,as diesel trains are operated at maximum load condition.

A new hydroprocessed depolymerized cellulosic diesel (HDCD) fuel has been developed using a process which takes biomass feedstock (principally cellulosic wood) to produce a synthetic fuel that has nominally ½ cycloparaffins and ½ aromatic hydrocarbons in content. This HDCD fuel with a low cetane value (derived cetane number from the ignition quality tester, DCN = 27) was blended with naval distillate fuel (NATO symbol F-76) in various quantities and tested in order to determine how much HDCD could be blended before diesel engine operation becomes problematic. Blends of 20% HDCD (DCN = 45), 30%, 40% (DCN = 41), and 60% HDCD (DCN = 37) by volume were tested with conventional naval distillate fuel (DCN = 49). Engine start performance was evaluated with a conventional mechanically direct injected (DI) Yanmar engine and a Waukesha mechanical indirect injected (IDI) Cooperative Fuels Research (CFR) diesel engine and showed that engine start times increased steadily with increasing HDCD content. Longer start times with increasing HDCD content were the result of some engine cycles with poor combustion leading to a slower rate of engine acceleration toward rated speed. A repeating sequence of alternating cycles which combust followed by a noncombustion cycle was common during engine run-up. Additionally, steady-state engine testing was also performed using both engines. HDCD has a significantly higher bulk modulus than F76 due to its very high aromatic content, and the engines showed earlier start of injection (SOI) timing with increasing HDCD content for equivalent operating conditions. Additionally, due to the lower DCN, the higher HDCD blends showed moderately longer ignition delay (IGD) with moderately shorter overall burn durations. Thus, the midcombustion metric (CA50: 50% burn duration crank angle position) was only modestly affected with increasing HDCD content. Increasing HDCD content beyond 40% leads to significantly longer start times.

The paper presents a model of dynamics of six-cylinder inline diesel engine executed in the Matlab software. The basic equations necessary to describe the forces acting during the engine operation was presented. Application of some simplifications allowed to present proposal of a mathematical model of the engine, which allows analysis of changes of forces in the crank-piston system, depending on the technical condition of the fuel system elements. Operational experience indicate that one of the most common cause of failure of the fuel system is reduced fuel charge supplied by a defective fuel injection pump. Calculations of gas forces had been replaced by the implementation into the model indication charts recorded from tests on a engine test stand. Simulation results were presented as a result of FFT spectra of modeled tangential forces.
