Experimental Study on Heat Flux Effect on Evaporation in Two Dimple-Grooved Tubes

An experimental study on local flow boiling heat transfer performance in two longitudinal dimple-grooved tubes and an equivalent smooth tube was performed. All three test cooper tubes have the same inner diameter of 11.5 mm; the working fluid is the near-azeotropic mixture, R410A; and all test runs are conducted in a 2 m long horizontal tube-in-tube heat exchanger. Constant evaporation temperature at 10 °C was maintained when heat flux ranging from 32 kW/m2 to 37 kW/m2 and refrigerant quality varied from inlet 0.1 to outlet 0.9 at mass flux 150 kg/(m2 s). The local heat transfer coefficients were obtained for all test conditions using refrigerant R410A. The test results for evaporation were presented compared to the equivalent smooth tube. Wall temperature and local and average heat flux is measured; heat flux effect and surface superheat effect is discussed on the tube side evaporation. The enhanced heat transfer area of two longitudinal dimple-grooved tubes are 1.02 and 1.03, respectively.

R22 is the most widely employed HCFC working fluid in vapour compression plant. HCFCs must be replaced within 2020. Major problems arise with the substitution of the working fluids, related to the decrease in performance of the plant. Therefore, extremely accurate design procedures are needed. The relative sizing of each of the components of the plant is crucial for cycle performance. For this reason, the knowledge of the new fluids heat transfer characteristics in condensers and evaporators is required. The local heat transfer coefficients and pressure drop of pure R22 and of the azeotropic mixture R507 (R125-R143a 50%/50% in weight) have been measured during convective boiling. The test section is a smooth horizontal tube made of a with a 6 mm I.D. stainless steel tube, 6 m length, uniformly heated by Joule effect. The effects of heat flux, mass flux and evaporation pressure on the heat transfer coefficients are investigated. The evaporating pressure varies within the range 3 ÷10 bar, the refrigerant mass flux within the range 200 ÷ 1000 kg/m2s, the heat flux within 0 ÷ 44 kW/m2. A comparison have been carried out between the experimental data and those predicted by means of the most credited literature relationships.

Flow boiling with microchannel can dissipate high heat fluxes at low surface temperature difference. A number of issues, such as instabilities, low critical heat flux (CHF) and low heat transfer coefficients, have prevented it from reaching its full potential. A new design incorporating open microchannels with uniform and tapered manifold (OMM) was shown to mitigate these issues successfully. Distilled, degassed water at 80 mL/min is used as the working fluid. Plain and open microchannel surfaces are used as the test sections. Heat transfer and pressure drop performance for uniform and tapered manifold with both the surfaces are discussed. A low pressure drop of 7.5 kPa is obtained with tapered manifold and microchannel chip at a heat flux of 263 W/cm2 without reaching CHF. The pressure drop data is further compared with the homogenous model and the initial results are presented.

This paper reports an experimental study of flow boiling in a microchannel and this work has been focused on the investigation on the effect of operating pressure. The experimental apparatus consisted mainly of peristaltic pump, preheater, microchannel test tube, and vacuum chamber for control of operating pressure. Deionized water was used as the working fluid. The test section was a round tube of 310 μm inside diameter, made of 304 stainless steel. The experiment has been performed for the conditions of heat flux of 35∼85 kW/m2, mass flux of 200∼300 kg/m2s (160∼250 of liquid Reynolds numbers), and the operating pressure of 10∼20 kPa. The measured flow boiling heat transfer coefficients in the microchannel were in the range of 3.0 to 27 kW/m2K and the experimental data showed that the flow boiling heat transfer coefficients in microchannels were affected mainly by the wall heat flux and the operating pressure.

Abstract Experiments of upward flow boiling heat transfer with water in a vertical smooth tube and a tube with axial micro-grooves were respectively conducted. Both of the tested tubes have a length of 2.5 m, an inner diameter of 15 mm and an outlet diameter of 19 mm. The tube with axial micro grooves has many micro rectangle grooves in its inner wall along the axial direction. The grooves have a depth of 0.5 mm and a width of 0.3 mm. The tests were performed at an absolute pressure of 6 bar. The heat flux ranged from 0 to 550 kW/m2 and the mass flux was selected at 410, 610 and 810 kg/m2s, respectively. By comparison, flow boiling heat transfer coefficients in the enhanced tube are 1.6 ∼ 2.7 fold that in the smooth tube while the frictional pressure drop in the enhanced tube is slightly greater than that in the smooth tube. The augmentation of flow boiling heat transfer in the tube with axial micro-grooves is apparent. Based on the experimental data, a correlation of flow boiling heat transfer is proposed for the enhanced tube. Finally, the mechanisms of heat transfer enhancement are analyzed.

Abstract In this study, we use infrared thermography to calculate local heat transfer coefficients of top and bottom heated flows of near-critical carbon dioxide in an array of parallel microchannels. These data are used to evaluate the relative importance of buoyancy for different flow arrangements. A Joule heated thin wall made of Inconel 718 applies a uniform heat flux either above or below the horizontal flow. A Torlon PAI test section consists of three parallel microchannels with a hydraulic diameter of 923 μm. The reduced inlet temperature (TR = 1.006) and reduced pressure (PR = 1.03) are held constant. For each heater orientation, the mass flux (520 kgm−2s−2 ≤ G ≤ 800 kgm−2s−2) and heat flux (4.7 Wcm−2 ≤ q″ ≤ 11.1 Wcm−2) are varied. A 2D resistance network analysis method calculates the bulk temperatures and heat transfer coefficients. In this analysis, we divide the test section into approximately 250 segments along the stream-wise direction. We then calculate the bulk temperatures using the enthalpy from the upstream segment, the heat flux in a segment, and the pressure. To isolate the effect of buoyancy, we screen the data to omit conditions where flow acceleration may be important or where relaminarization may occur. In the developed region of the channel, there was a 10 to 15 percent reduction of the local heat transfer coefficients for the upward heating mode compared to downward heating with the same mass and heat fluxes. Thus buoyancy effects should be considered when developing correlations for these types of flow.

A test rig was constructed to investigate flow boiling in an electrically heated horizontal mini-channel array. The test section is made of copper and consists of twelve parallel mini-channels. The channels are 1 mm deep, 1 mm wide and 250 mm long. The test section is heated from underneath with six cartridge heaters. The channels are covered with a glass plate to allow visual observations of the flow patterns using a high-speed video-camera. The wall temperatures are measured at five positions along the channel axis with two resistance thermometers in a specified distance in heat flow direction. Local heat transfer coefficients are obtained by calculating the local heat flux. The working fluids are deionised water and ethanol. The experiments were performed under near atmospheric pressure (0.94 bar to 1.2 bar absolute). The inlet temperature was kept constant at 20°C. The measurements were taken for three mass fluxes (120; 150; 185 kg/m2s) at heat fluxes from 7 to 375 kW/m2. Heat transfer coefficients are presented for single phase forced convection, subcooled and saturated flow boiling conditions. The heat transfer coefficient increases slightly with rising heat flux for single phase flow. A strong increase is observed in subcooled flow boiling. At high heat flux the heat transfer coefficient decreases slightly with increasing heat flux. The application of ethanol instead of water leads to an increase of the surface temperature. At the same low heat flux flow boiling heat transfer occurs with ethanol, but in the experiments with water single phase heat transfer is still dominant. It is because of the lower specific heat capacity of ethanol compared to water. There is a slight influence of the mass flux in the investigated parameter range. The pictures of a high-speed video-camera are analysed for the two-phase flow-pattern identification.

Quasi-local absorption heat transfer coefficients and pressure drop inside a horizontal tube absorber have been investigated experimentally, with R-22/DMA as the working pair. The absorber is a counterflow coaxial tube-in-tube heat-exchanger with the working fluid flowing in the inner tube while the water moves through the annulus. A large temperature gliding has been experienced during the absorption process. Experimental results show that the heat transfer coefficient of the forced convective vapor absorption process is higher compared to the vertical falling film absorption. A qualitative study is made to analyze the effect of mass flux, vapor quality and solution concentration on pressure drop and heat transfer coefficients. On the basis of the experimental results, a new correlation is proposed whereby the two-phase heat transfer is taken as a product of the forced convection of the absorption and the combined effect of heat and mass transfer at the interface. The correlation is found to predict the experimental data almost within 30 percent.

Flow boiling in parallel microchannels with structured reentrant cavities was experimental studied. Flow patterns, boiling inceptions and heat transfer coefficients were obtained and studied for G = 83 kg/m2-s to G = 303 kg/m2-s and heat fluxes up to 643 W/cm2. The heat transfer coefficient-mass velocity and quality relations had been analyzed to identify boiling mechanism. Comparisons of the performance of the enhanced and plain-wall microchannels had also been made. The microchannels with reentrant cavities were shown to promote nucleation of bubbles and to support significantly better reproducibility and uniformity of bubble generation.
