Battery Thermal Management for Hybrid Electric Vehicles Using a Phase-Change Material Cold Plate
Keyword(s):
A novel liquid-cooled (50-50 ethylene glycol-water mixture) composite cold plate made of phase-change material (PCM) is proposed as a thermal management solution for energy storage systems (ESS) in hybrid-electric vehicles (HEV). The composite cold plate is lighter than a traditional aluminum cold plate and able to absorb high heat flux spikes. Furthermore, the pump operation time is reduced. The goal of the present study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a preliminary PCM cold plate subjected to constant heat flux. The inlet temperature of the working fluid is parametrically varied and results include PCM temperatures and pump operation times.
