A Tribological Study of Partial-Arc Bearings With Egg-Shaped Surface Texture for Microturbine Applications

Recent research has demonstrated that proper use of texture geometries can improve the performance of journal and thrust bearings. In particular, for journal bearings, elliptical and egg-shaped texture patterns appear as promising candidates for improving bearing performance, in terms of load carrying capacity and friction coefficient. The expected advantages should also hold for partial-arc bearings, which, for small scale – high speed applications, are characterized by significant advantages, in comparison to full bearings. In the present paper, a tribological study of partial-arc journal bearings with periodic egg-shaped texture applied on the stator surface is presented. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations are performed and processed to yield the bearing performance indices. Here, the bearing geometry and the texture characteristics are defined parametrically; a wide range of bearing designs is thus accounted for. Flow simulations are based on the numerical solution of the Navier-Stokes equations for incompressible isothermal flow. The effects of dimple shape, bearing eccentricity, bearing arc angle, and slenderness ratio on the bearing performance are investigated. The present results demonstrate that a substantial improvement of journal bearing performance, especially in terms of the friction coefficient, in comparison to that of smooth bearings, is feasible.

We study the dynamics and the statistics of dilute suspensions of gyrotactic swimmers, a model for many aquatic motile microorganisms. By means of extensive numerical simulations of the Navier–Stokes equations at different Reynolds numbers, we investigate preferential sampling and small-scale clustering as a function of the swimming (stability and speed) and shape parameters, considering in particular the limits of spherical and rod-like particles. While spherical swimmers preferentially sample local downwelling flow, for elongated swimmers we observe a transition from downwelling to upwelling regions at sufficiently high swimming speed. The spatial distribution of both spherical and elongated swimmers is found to be fractal at small scales in a wide range of swimming parameters. The direct comparison between the different shapes shows that spherical swimmers are more clusterized at small stability and speed numbers, while for large values of the parameters elongated cells concentrate more. The relevance of our results for phytoplankton swimming in the ocean is briefly discussed.

This research investigates the effect of varying the concentric recess pressure ratio of hybrid (combination hydrostatic and hydrodynamic) bearings to be used in high-speed, high-pressure applications. Bearing flowrate, load capacity, torque, rotordynamic coefficients, and whirl frequency ratio are examined to determine the concentric, recess-pressure ratio which yields optimum bearing load capacity and dynamic stiffness. An analytical model, using two-dimensional bulk-flow Navier-Stokes equations and anchored by experimental test results, is used to examine bearing performance over a wide range of concentric recess pressure ratios. Typically, a concentric recess pressure ratio of 0.50 is used to obtain maximum bearing load capacity. This analysis reveals that theoretical optimum bearing performance occurs for a pressure ratio near 0.40, while experimental results indicate the optimum value to he somewhat higher than 0.45. This research demonstrates the ability to analytically investigate hybrid bearings and shows the need for more hybrid-bearing experimental data.

The study of sediment transport requires in-depth investigation of the complex effects of sediment particles in fluid turbulence. In this paper we focus on intense sediment transport flows. None of the existing two-phase models in the literature properly replicates the liquid and solid stresses in the near bed region of high concentration of sediment. The reason for this shortcoming is that the physical processes occurring at the length scale of the particle collisions are different from those occurring at larger length scales and therefore, they must be modelled independently. We present here a two-level theoretical derivation of two-phase, Favre averaged Navier–Stokes equations (FANS). This approach treats two levels of energy fluctuations independently, those associated with a granular spatial scale (granular temperature and small-scale fluid turbulence) and those associated with the ensemble average (turbulent kinetic energy for the two phases). Although similar attempts have been made by other researchers, the two level approach ensures that the two relevant length scales are included independently in a more consistent manner. The model is endowed with a semi-empirical formulation for the granular scale fluid turbulence, which is important even in the dense collisional shear layer, as has been recently recognized. As a result of the large and small scale modelling of the liquid and solid fluctuations, predictions are promising to be reliable in a wide range of flow conditions, from collisional to turbulent suspensions. This model has been validated for steady state flows with intense, collisional or mixed collisional–turbulent sediment transport, using various sources of detailed experimental data. It compares well with the experimental results in the whole experimental range of Shields parameters, better than previous models, although at the cost of increased complexity in the equations. Further experiments on turbulent suspensions would be necessary to definitely assess the model capabilities.

A brief review of current approaches to active feedback control of the fluctuations arising in turbulent flows is presented, emphasizing the mathematical techniques involved. Active feedback control schemes are categorized and compared by examining the extent to which they are based on the governing flow equations. These schemes are broken down into the following categories: adaptive schemes, schemes based on heuristic physical arguments, schemes based on a dynamical systems approach, and schemes based on optimal control theory applied directly to the Navier-Stokes equations. Recent advances in methods of implementing small scale flow control ideas are also reviewed.

Abstract When simulating elastohydrodynamic lubrication, two main approaches are usually followed to predict the pressure and fluid film thickness distribution throughout the contact. The conventional approach relies on the Reynolds equation to describe the thin lubricant film, which is coupled to a Boussinesq description of the linear elastic deformation of the solids. A more accurate, yet a time-consuming method is the use of computational fluid dynamics in which the Navier–Stokes equations describe the flow of the thin lubricant film, coupled to a finite element solver for the description of the local contact deformation. This investigation aims at assessing both methods for different lubrication conditions in different elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) regimes and quantify their differences to understand advantages and limitations of both methods. This investigation shows how the results from both approaches deviate for three scenarios: (1) inertial contributions (Re > 1), i.e., thick films, high speed, and low viscosity; (2) high shear stresses leading to secondary flows; and (3) large deformations of the solids leading to inaccuracies of the Boussinesq equation.

This paper numerically investigates the effects of buoyancy on fully developed laminar flow in a curved duct with an elliptic cross section. The flow of Newtonian fluids is assumed steady in terms of Boussinesq approximation. The curved elliptic duct is subjected to thermal boundary conditions of axially uniform heat flux and peripherally uniform wall temperature. The numerically generated boundary-fitted coordinate system is applied to discretize the solution domain of the elliptic duct, and the Navier-Stokes equations and the energy equation, including the curvature ratio, are solved by use of the control volume-based finite difference method. The solution covers a wide range of curvature ratios, and Dean and Grashof numbers. The results presented are displayed graphically and in tabular form to illustrate the buoyancy effect. It is further shown that buoyancy acts to increase both the Nusselt number and the friction factor and changes the distribution of the velocity and the temperature. The results for the curved circular duct with and without buoyancy are compared with the data available in the open literature for all cases. Also compared with the published data are the results of laminar flow in a curved elliptic duct, and very good agreement is obtained.

Ski jump spillways are frequently implemented to dissipate energy from high-speed flows. The general feature of this structure is to transform the spillway flow into a free jet up to a location where the impact of the jet creates a plunge pool, representing an area for potential erosion phenomena. In the present investigation, several tests with different ski jump bucket angles are executed numerically by means of the OpenFOAM® digital library, taking advantage of the Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equations (RANS) approach. The results are compared to those obtained experimentally by other authors as related to the jet length and shape, obtaining physical insights into the jet characteristics. Particular attention is given to the maximum pressure head at the tailwater. Simple equations are proposed to predict the maximum dynamic pressure head acting on the tailwater, as dependent upon the Froude number, and the maximum pressure head on the bucket. Results of this study provide useful suggestions for the design of ski jump spillways in dam construction.

Analyses of aerodynamic dissipation in ordinary un-ionized gases are all based upon the Navier-Stokes equations. These equations relate the rate of dissipation to the local gradients in velocity and temperature through the viscosity and heat conduction coefficients. Although it is true that in many flow situations the magnitude of the total dissipation in the gas does not depend on the magnitude of the viscosity coefficient, this coefficient does determine the minimum scale of variations observed in the gas and the form of the Navier-Stokes equations determines the type of phenomena which are observed on a small scale. In order to discuss dissipation in an ionized gas in the presence of a magnetic field, it is therefore necessary to re-examine the derivation of the basic flow equations. This paper attempts to do this for a case of a completely ionized gas and demonstrates that the basic microscopic dissipation mechanism is appreciably different. For example, it is shown that the minimum length in which the properties of the flow field can change noticeably is appreciably less than one mean free path.

The dynamic response to shear of a fluid-filled square cavity with stable temperature stratification is investigated numerically. The shear is imposed by the constant translation of the top lid, and is quantified by the associated Reynolds number. The stratification, quantified by a Richardson number, is imposed by maintaining the temperature of the top lid at a higher constant temperature than that of the bottom, and the side walls are insulating. The Navier–Stokes equations under the Boussinesq approximation are solved, using a pseudospectral approximation, over a wide range of Reynolds and Richardson numbers. Particular attention is paid to the dynamical mechanisms associated with the onset of instability of steady state solutions, and to the complex and rich dynamics occurring beyond.

AbstractNew avenues are explored for the numerical study of the two dimensional inviscid hydrostatic primitive equations of the atmosphere with humidity and saturation, in presence of topography and subject to physically plausible boundary conditions for the system of equations. Flows above a mountain are classically treated by the so-called method of terrain following coordinate system. We avoid this discretization method which induces errors in the discretization of tangential derivatives near the topography. Instead we implement a first order finite volume method for the spatial discretization using the initial coordinates x and p. A compatibility condition similar to that related to the condition of incompressibility for the Navier- Stokes equations, is introduced. In that respect, a version of the projection method is considered to enforce the compatibility condition on the horizontal velocity field, which comes from the boundary conditions. For the spatial discretization, a modified Godunov type method that exploits the discrete finite-volume derivatives by using the so-called Taylor Series Expansion Scheme (TSES), is then designed to solve the equations. We report on numerical experiments using realistic parameters. Finally, the effects of a random small-scale forcing on the velocity equation is numerically investigated.
