Unsteady Rotor Hub Passage Vortex Behavior in the Presence of Purge Flow in an Axial Low Pressure Turbine

The paper presents an experimental and computational study of the unsteady behavior of the rotor hub passage vortex in an axial low-pressure turbine. Different flow structures are identified as having an effect on the size, strength, shape, position and the unsteady behavior of the rotor hub passage vortex. The aim of the presented study is to analyze and quantify the sensitivities of the different flow structures and to investigate their combined effects on the rotor hub passage vortex. Particular attention is paid to the effect of the rim seal purge flow and of the unsteady blade row interaction. The rotor under investigation has non-axisymmetric end walls on both hub and shroud and is tested at three different rim seal purge flow injection rates. The rotor has separated pressure sides at the operating point under investigation. The non-dimensional parameters of the tested turbine match real engine conditions. The 2-sensor Fast Response Aerodynamic Probe (FRAP) technique and the Fast Response Entropy Probe (FENT) systems developed by ETH Zurich are used in this experimental campaign. Time-resolved measurements of the unsteady pressure, temperature and entropy fields between the rotor and stator blade rows are taken and analyzed. Furthermore, the results of URANS simulations are compared to the measurements and the computations are also used to detail the flow field. The experimental results show a 30% increase of the maximum unsteadiness and a 4% increase of the loss in the hub passage vortex per percent of injected rim seal cooling flow. Compared to a free stream particle, the rim seal purge flow was found to do 60% less work on the rotor.

The profiled end walls show the beneficial effects of improved measured efficiency at this operating point, together with a reduced sensitivity to purge flow.

Abstract This two-part paper presents the unsteady flow interactions between an engine-representative high-pressure turbine (HPT) and low-pressure turbine (LPT) stage, connected by a turbine center frame (TCF) duct with non-turning struts. The setup was tested at the high-speed two-spool test turbine facility at the Institute for Thermal Turbomachinery and Machine Dynamics at Graz University of Technology and includes relevant purge and turbine rotor tip leakage flows. Due to the complexity of such a test, the unsteady component interactions in an HPT-TCF-LPT module have not received much attention in the past and require additional analysis to determine new approaches for further performance improvements on the system level. The flow downstream of an HPT is highly unsteady and dominated by statorrotor interactions, which affect the flow behavior through the downstream TCF and LPT. To capture the unsteady flow structures, time-resolved aerodynamic measurements were carried out with a fast-response aerodynamic pressure probe (FRAPP) at three different measurement planes. In this first part of the paper, the time-resolved and phase-averaged flow fields with respect to the HPT and LPT trigger are studied. Since the two rotors are uncorrelated, the applied method allows the identification of the flow structures induced by either of them. Upstream of the LPT stage, the HPT flow structures evolving through the TCF duct dominate the flow fields. Downstream of the LPT stage, the flow is affected by both the HPT and the LPT secondary flow structures. The interactions between the various stator rows and the two rotors are detected by means of time-space plots and modal decomposition. To describe the fluctuations induced by both rotors, particularly the rotor-rotor interaction, the Rotor Synchronic Averaging (RSA) is used to analyze the flow field downstream of the LPT. The second part of the paper decomposes the flow fields to gain additional insight into the rotor-rotor interactions using the Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) and RSA methods. The paper highlights the need to account for the HPT-induced unsteady mechanisms in addition to the LPT flow structures and the interaction of both to arrive at improved LPT designs.

Abstract This paper presents the experimental and numerical evaluation and comparison of the different flow fields downstream of a turbine center frame duct and a low-pressure turbine stage, generated by varying the inlet flow conditions to the turbine center frame duct. The measurements were carried out in an engine-representative two-stage two-spool test turbine facility at the Institute for Thermal Turbomachinery and Machine Dynamics at Graz University of Technology. The rig consists of a high-pressure (HPT) and a low-pressure (LPT) turbine stage, connected via a turbine center frame (TCF) with non-turning struts. Four individual high-pressure turbine purge flow rates and two low-pressure turbine purge flow rates were varied to achieve different engine-relevant TCF and LPT inlet flow conditions. The experimental data was acquired by means of five-hole-probe area traverses upstream and downstream of the TCF, and downstream of the LPT. A steady RANS simulation taking all purge flows in account was used for comparison and additional insight are gained from a numerical variation of the HPT and LPT purge flow rates. The focus of this study is on the impact of the variations in TCF inlet conditions on the secondary flow generation through the TCF duct and the carry-over effects on the exit flow field and performance of the LPT stage. Existing work is limited by either investigating multi-stage LPT configurations with generally very few measurements behind the first stage or by not including relevant HPT secondary flow structures in setting up the LPT inflow conditions. This work addresses both of these shortcomings and presents new insight into the TCF and LPT aerodynamic behavior at varying the HPT and LPT purge flows. The results demonstrate the importance of the HPT flow structures and their evolution through the TCF duct for setting up the LPT inflow conditions, and ultimately for assessing the performance of the first LPT stage.

Abstract An investigation of endwall loss development is conducted using the T106A low-pressure turbine cascade. (U)RANS simulations are complemented by measurements under engine relevant flow conditions (M2th = 0.59, Re2th = 2·105). The effects of unsteady inflow conditions and varying inlet endwall boundary layer are compared in terms of secondary flow attenuation downstream of the blade passage, analyzing steady, time-averaged, and time-resolved flow fields. While both measures show similar effects in the turbine exit plane, the upstream loss development throughout the blade passage is quite different. A variation of the endwall boundary layer alters the slope of the axial loss generation beginning around the midpoint of the blade passage. Periodically incoming wakes, however, cause a spatial redistribution of the loss generation with a premature loss increase due to wake interaction in the front part of the passage followed by an attenuation of the profile- and secondary loss generation in the aft section of the blade passage. Ultimately, this leads to a convergence of the downstream loss values in the steady and unsteady inflow cases.

Research by de la Rosa Blanco et al. (“Influence of the State of the Inlet Endwall Boundary Layer on the Interaction Between the Pressure Surface Separation and the Endwall Flows,” Proc. Inst. Mech. Eng., Part A, 217, pp. 433–441) in a linear cascade of low pressure turbine (LPT) blades has shown that the position and strength of the vortices forming the endwall flows depend on the state of the inlet endwall boundary layer, i.e., whether it is laminar or turbulent. This determines, amongst other effects, the location where the inlet boundary layer rolls up into a passage vortex, the amount of fluid that is entrained into the passage vortex, and the interaction of the vortex with the pressure side separation bubble. As a consequence, the mass-averaged stagnation pressure loss and therefore the design of a LPT depend on the state of the inlet endwall boundary layer. Unfortunately, the state of the boundary layer along the hub and casing under realistic engine conditions is not known. The results presented in this paper are taken from hot-film measurements performed on the casing of the fourth stage of the nozzle guide vanes of the cold flow affordable near term low emission (ANTLE) LPT rig. These results are compared with those from a low speed linear cascade of similar LPT blades. In the four-stage LPT rig, a transitional boundary layer has been found on the platforms upstream of the leading edge of the blades. The boundary layer is more turbulent near the leading edge of the blade and for higher Reynolds numbers. Within the passage, for both the cold flow four-stage rig and the low speed linear cascade, the new inlet boundary layer formed behind the pressure leg of the horseshoe vortex is a transitional boundary layer. The transition process progresses from the pressure to the suction surface of the passage in the direction of the secondary flow.

This paper aims at evaluating the characteristics of the wakes periodically shed by the rotating bars of a spoked-wheel type wake generator installed upstream of a high-speed low Reynolds linear low-pressure turbine blade cascade. Due to the very high bar passing frequency obtained with the rotating wake generator (fbar = 2.4−5.6 kHz), a fast-response pressure probe equipped with a single 350 mbar absolute Kulite sensor has been used. In order to measure the inlet flow angle fluctuations, an angular aerodynamic calibration of the probe allowed the use of the virtual three-hole mode; additionally, yielding yaw corrected periodic total pressure, static pressure and Mach number fluctuations. The results are presented for four bar passing frequencies (fbar = 2.4/3.2/4.6/5.6 kHz), each tested at three isentropic inlet Mach numbers M1,is = 0.26/0.34/0.41 and for Reynolds numbers varying between Re1,is = 40,000 and 58,000, thus covering a wide range of engine representative flow coefficients (ϕ = 0.44−1.60). The measured wake characteristics show fairly good agreement with the theory of fixed cylinders in a cross-flow and the evaluated total pressure losses and flow angle variations generated by the rotating bars show fairly good agreement with theoretical results obtained from a control volume analysis.

Aerodynamic measurements were acquired on a modern single-stage, transonic, high-pressure turbine with the adjacent low-pressure turbine vane row (a typical civilian one and one-half stage turbine rig) to observe the effects of low-pressure turbine vane clocking on overall turbine performance. The turbine rig (loosely referred to in this paper as the stage) was operated at design corrected conditions using the Ohio State University Gas Turbine Laboratory Turbine Test Facility (TTF). The research program utilized uncooled hardware in which all three airfoils were heavily instrumented at multiple spans to develop a full clocking dataset. The low-pressure turbine vane row (LPTV) was clocked relative to the high-pressure turbine vane row (HPTV). Various methods were used to evaluate the influence of clocking on the aeroperformance (efficiency) and the aerodynamics (pressure loading) of the LPTV, including time-resolved and time-averaged measurements. A change in overall efficiency of approximately 2–3% due to clocking effects is demonstrated and could be observed using a variety of independent methods. Maximum efficiency is obtained when the time-average surface pressures are highest on the LPTV and the time-resolved surface pressure (both in the time domain and frequency domain) show the least amount of variation. The overall effect is obtained by integrating over the entire airfoil, as the three-dimensional effects on the LPTV surface are significant. This experimental data set validates several computational research efforts that suggested wake migration is the primary reason for the perceived effectiveness of vane clocking. The suggestion that wake migration is the dominate mechanism in generating the clocking effect is also consistent with anecdotal evidence that fully cooled engine rigs do not see a great deal of clocking effect. This is consistent since the additional disturbances induced by the cooling flows and/or the combustor make it extremely difficult to find an alignment for the LPTV given the strong 3D nature of modern high-pressure turbine flows.
