Comparative Validation Study on Identification of Premixed Flame Transfer Function

The flame transfer function (FTF) of a premixed swirl burner was identified from time series generated with CFD simulation of compressible, turbulent, reacting flow at non-adiabatic conditions. Results were validated against experimental data. For large eddy simulation (LES), the Dynamically Thickened Flame combustion model with one step kinetics was used. For unsteady simulation in a Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes framework (URANS), the Turbulent Flame Closure model was employed. The FTF identified from LES shows quantitative agreement with experiment for amplitude and phase, especially for frequencies below 200 Hz. At higher frequencies, the gain of the FTF is underpredicted. URANS results show good qualitative agreement, capturing the main features of the flame response. However, the maximum amplitude and the phase lag of the FTF are underpredicted. Using a low-order network model of the test rig, the impact of the discrepancies in predicted FTFs on frequencies and growth rates of the lowest order eigenmodes were assessed. Small differences in predicted FTFs were found to have a significant impact on stability limits. Stability behavior in agreement with experimental data was achieved only with the LES-based flame transfer function.

A new model approach is presented in this work for including convective wall heat losses in the direct quadrature method of moments (DQMoM) approach, which is used here to solve the transport equation of the one-point, one-time joint thermochemical probability density function (PDF). This is of particular interest in the context of designing industrial combustors, where wall heat losses play a crucial role. In the present work, the novel method is derived for the first time and validated against experimental data for the thermal entrance region of a pipe. The impact of varying model-specific boundary conditions is analyzed. It is then used to simulate the turbulent reacting flow of a confined methane jet flame. The simulations are carried out using the DLR in-house computational fluid dynamics code THETA. It is found that the DQMoM approach presented here agrees well with the experimental data and ratifies the use of the new convective wall heat losses model.

Recently, a fractal-based algebraic flame surface density (FSD) premixed combustion model has been derived and validated in the context of large eddy simulation (LES). The fractal parameters in the model, namely the cut-off scales and the fractal dimension were derived using theoretical models, experimental and direct numerical simulation (DNS) databases. The model showed good performance in predicting the premixed turbulent flame propagation for low to high Reynold numbers (Re) in ambient as well as elevated pressure conditions. Several LES combustion models have a direct counterpart in the Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) context. In this work, a RANS version of the aforementioned LES subgrid scale FSD combustion model is developed. The performance of the RANS model is compared with that of the original LES model and validated with the experimental data. It is found that the RANS version of the model shows similarly good agreement with the experimental data.

A 3D CFD simulation of turbulent reactive flows is discussed. The original compressible version of the solver HybFlow designed for turbine rows investigation is here applied for low speed burning flow. A conserved scalar approach is considered to simulate the turbulent reacting flow field of non-premixed flames. The spatial discretization is based on an upwind finite volume method for unstructured grids using the Roe’s Riemann solver with a non-linear TVD scheme. The steady state solution is computed by means of an implicit relaxed Newton method. The linear solver is GMRES coupled with an ILU(0) preconditioning scheme. The turbulence chemistry interaction is described using a presumed β-PDF Flamelet approach. Two test applications are here presented to verify the methodology characteristics for a pilot-jet turbulent flame and a bluff-body stabilized flame both using CH4. A model combustor supplied with propane is also briefly shown as an example of application to a more realistic configuration.

Abstract Flamelet Generated Manifold (FGM) has proven to be an efficient approach to model turbulent combustion across different regimes of combustion. The manifolds are generally created by solving laminar premixed or opposed flow configurations. Gas turbine combustors often involve many strong non-adiabatic events such as multiple temperature boundaries, quenching from cooling and effusion holes, conjugate heat transfer, soot radiation interaction, phase change from spray and the modulation of inlet conditions. The adiabatic assumption of the underlying flamelet generation in the FGM is, therefore, prone to errors in the prediction of flame speed, liner temperatures, and pollutant formation. In this work, a novel approach to generate fully non-adiabatic manifold is proposed and validated. The FGM manifold is created using a series of non-adiabatic flamelets, each flamelet is solved in one-dimensional physical space. The non-adiabatic flamelets are generated with an optimal combination of freely propagating and burner stabilized flames. This hybrid method of the flamelet configuration allows modeling large heat gain and loss without encountering any unrealistic temperature in the flamelet solution. Such fully non-adiabatic flamelets are then convoluted to generate a five-dimensional Non-adiabatic Flamelet Generated Manifold (NFGM) Probability Density Function (PDF.). The average properties such as temperature, mixture density, species concentration, rate of reaction, etc. from PDF are then coupled with the CFD solution. The non-adiabatic flamelets and corresponding NFGM is implemented into ANSYS Fluent software version 2020R1. This approach is validated first for canonical cases, followed by gas turbine like conditions of swirl stabilized methane fueled turbulent flame, developed at DLR Stuttgart as the PRECCINSTA combustor. The experimental data for this combustor is available for multiple operating conditions. A stable operating point (φ = 0.83, P = 30 kW) is chosen. The proposed nonadiabatic NFGM is used with Stress blended eddy simulation (SBES). The current NFGM-SBES results are compared with experimental data as well as the previously published works. The impact of modeling heat release in flamelet is used to analyze the M-shape versus V-shape flame transition and the peaks of the carbon monoxide in mixing shear layers. The findings from the current work, in terms of accuracy, validity and best practices while modeling NFGM-SBES are discussed and summarized. The improved results of NFGM compared to adiabatic FGM are encouraging and provides a potential high-fidelity tool for accurate, yet efficient modeling of turbulent combustion inside gas turbines.

The work presented in this paper comprises the application of an extension for the Flamelet Generated Manifold model which allows to consider elevated flame stretch rates and heat loss. This approach does not require further table dimensions. Hence, the numerical overhead is negligible, preserving the industrial applicability. A validation is performed in which stretch and heat loss dependent distributions are obtained from the combustion model to compare them to experimental data from an atmospheric single burner test rig operating at lean conditions. The reaction mechanism is extended by OH*-kinetics which allows the comparison of numerical OH*-concentrations with experimentally obtained OH*-chemiluminescence. Improvement compared to the Flamelet Generated Manifold model without extension regarding the shape and position of the turbulent flame brush can be shown and are substantiated by the validation of species distributions which better fit the experimental in situ measurements when the extension is used. These improvements are mandatory to enable subsequent modeling of emissions or thermoacoustics where high accuracy is required. In addition to the validation, a qualitative comparison of further combustion models is performed in which the experimental data serve as a benchmark to evaluate the accuracy. Most combustion models typically simplify the combustion process as flame stretch or non-adiabatic effects are not captured. It turns out that the tested combustion models show improvement when stretch or heat loss is considered by model corrections. However, satisfactory results could only be achieved by considering both effects employing the extension for the Flamelet Generated Manifold model.

Abstract In this work, a stochastic reactor model (SRM) is presented that bridges the gap between multi-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models and zero-dimensional models for simulating spark-ignited internal combustion engines. The quasi-dimensional approach calculates spatial temperature and composition of stochastic “particles” in the combustion chamber without defining their spatial position, thus allowing for mixture stratification while keeping computational costs low. The SRM simulates flame propagation using a three-zone combustion model consisting of burned gas, flame front, and unburned gas. This “flame brush” approach assumes a hemispherical flame front that propagates through the cylinder based on estimated turbulent flame speed. Cycle-averaged turbulence intensity (u’) is used in the model, calibrated using experimental data. Through the use of a kinetic mechanism, the model predicts key emissions such as CO, CO2, NO, NO2, and HC from both port fuel injection (PFI) and gasoline direct injection (GDI) engines, the latter through the implementation of a simplified spray model. Experimental data from three engines, two GDI and one PFI, were used to validate the model and calibrate cycle-averaged u’. Across all engines, the model was able to produce pressure curves that matched the experimental data. In terms of emissions, the simplified chemical kinetics mechanism matched trends of the experimental data, with the PFI results having higher accuracy. Pressure, burned fraction, and engine-out emissions predictions show that the SRM can reliably match experimental results in certain operating ranges, thus providing a viable alternative to complex CFD and single zone models.

Gasoline compression ignition (GCI) is a low temperature combustion (LTC) concept that has been gaining increasing interest over the recent years owing to its potential to achieve diesel-like thermal efficiencies with significantly reduced engine-out nitrogen oxides (NOx) and soot emissions compared to diesel engines. In this work, closed-cycle computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations are performed of this combustion mode using a sector mesh in an effort to understand effects of model settings on simulation results. One goal of this work is to provide recommendations for grid resolution, combustion model, chemical kinetic mechanism, and turbulence model to accurately capture experimental combustion characteristics. Grid resolutions ranging from 0.7 mm to 0.1 mm minimum cell sizes were evaluated in conjunction with both Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) and Large Eddy Simulation (LES) based turbulence models. Solution of chemical kinetics using the multi-zone approach is evaluated against the detailed approach of solving chemistry in every cell. The relatively small primary reference fuel (PRF) mechanism (48 species) used in this study is also evaluated against a larger 312-species gasoline mechanism. Based on these studies the following model settings are chosen keeping in mind both accuracy and computation costs — 0.175 mm minimum cell size grid, RANS turbulence model, 48-species PRF mechanism, and multi-zone chemistry solution with bin limits of 5 K in temperature and 0.05 in equivalence ratio. With these settings, the performance of the CFD model is evaluated against experimental results corresponding to a low load start of injection (SOI) timing sweep. The model is then exercised to investigate the effect of SOI on combustion phasing with constant intake valve closing (IVC) conditions and fueling over a range of SOI timings to isolate the impact of SOI on charge preparation and ignition. Simulation results indicate that there is an optimum SOI timing, in this case −30°aTDC (after top dead center), which results in the most stable combustion. Advancing injection with respect to this point leads to significant fuel mass burning in the colder squish region, leading to retarded phasing and ultimately misfire for SOI timings earlier than −42°aTDC. On the other hand, retarding injection beyond this optimum timing results in reduced residence time available for gasoline ignition kinetics, and also leads to retarded phasing, with misfire at SOI timings later than −15°aTDC.

Abstract This paper presents a RANS turbulent combustion model for CH4/H2/air mixtures which includes the effect of heat losses and flame stretch. This approach extends a previous model concept designed for methane/air mixtures and improves the prediction of flame stabilization when hydrogen is added to the fuel. Heat loss and stretch effects are modelled by tabulating the consumption speed of laminar counter flow flames in a fresh-to burnt configuration with detailed chemistry at various heat loss and flame stretch values. These computed values are then introduced in the turbulent combustion model by means of a turbulent flame speed expression which is derived as a function of flame stretch, heat loss and H2 addition. The model proposed in this paper is compared to existing models on experimental data of spherical expanding turbulent flame speeds. The performance of the model is further validated by comparing CFD predictions to experimental data of an atmospheric turbulent premixed bluff-body stabilized flame fed with CH4/H2/air mixtures ranging from pure methane to pure hydrogen.
