A Universal Mathematical Model for a New Combined-Cycle, Fossil-Fuel Power System (LAJ Cycle): Part 1 — Static Model

A universal mathematical model (UMM) has been developed and applied to the LAJ (for Labinov, Armstrong, and Judkins) cycle, a new combined-cycle, fossil-fuel power system. The UMM includes static and dynamic models of the system. The static model allows for thermodynamic and thermochemical analyses of the basic system components (reformer, turbine, membrane separator, fuel cell, air compressor, heat exchanger, and other components) and the entire system. Equilibrium compositions of reforming products are defined by minimizing Gibbs free energy of the mixtures using the Lagrangian multiplier method. The dependence of the main system parameters on pressure (P), temperature (T), and water-to-methane molar ratios (N) at the steam reformer have been evaluated. For selected reforming parameters, viz., P = 4.0 MPa and T = 1200 K, the degree of methane conversion is near 95% with N = 5. However, in view of mass and size limitations on equipment, a lower value of N = 3 is preferred, in which case the degree of methane conversion is 88%. The dependence of the system static model parameters on N has been investigated, and economic characteristics of the model have been evaluated for an output power of 250 kW. It is shown that when, N = 3, the fuel cost contribution to overall electricity costs is 1 cent/kWh.

The dynamic model provides for mode-to-mode (a partial load to a full or nominal load) time determination for the individual system components and for the entire system. System transient modes were studied, and it was determined that the reforming reactor transition time should be no less than 200 sec, which results in a system mode-to-mode transition time of three to four minutes.

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) has developed a novel system for combined-cycle power generation, called the LAJ cycle. This system could serve as a basis for the development of a new generation of high-efficiency combined cycles. In one of several possible configurations of the new combined-cycle fossil fuel power system, natural gas enters the system at 4.0 MPa and about 300 K, is heated and reformed, and is transferred to a turbine at 4.0 MPa and 1200 K. The gas expands in the turbine to 0.6 MPa and 800 K, and then flows successively to heat exchangers and a condenser-separator, after which it is separated into two gas streams, one containing principally CO with some CH4 and water vapor and the other containing pure H2. The CO and H2 flow to separate fuel cells and undergo electrochemical oxidation with the concomitant production of electricity. Separate streams of water and carbon dioxide (CO2) are produced, making this cycle compatible with carbon mitigation strategies based on sequestration. Model calculations indicate combined-cycle efficiencies greater than 70% based on the lower heating value of natural gas. The high efficiencies realized result from a combination of the high-pressure natural gas reformate expansion and the highly efficient CO and H2 fuel cells. Most of the power derives from the fuel cells in the system.

It also explains how to model and analyze the dynamic process of signal transmitting network for a biological system by an example. Based on the complexity and uncertainty of the mathematical model, the right methods are chosen to realize the effective estimation of state variables and model parameters for the biochemical pathway.

This paper characterizes the static, dynamic, and controlled behavior of a high-performance electro-hydraulic actuator to assess its suitability for use in evaluating machine tool behavior. The actuator consists of a double-acting piston and cylinder arrangement controlled by a servo valve and a separate rear chamber controlled by a separate valve, designed to work in conjunction to generate static forces of up to 7000 N that can be superposed with dynamic forces of up to ±1500 N. This superposition of periodic forces with a non-zero mean makes the actuator capable of applying realistic loading conditions like those experienced by machines during cutting processes. To characterize the performance of this actuator, linearized static and dynamic models are described. Since experiments with the actuator exhibit nonlinear characteristics, the linearized static model is expanded to include the influence of nonlinearities due to flow, leakages, saturations, and due to friction and hysteresis. Since all major nonlinearities are accounted for in the expanded static model, the dynamical model remains linear. Unknown static and dynamical model parameters are calibrated from experiments, and the updated models are observed to capture experimentally observed behavior very well. Validated models are used to tune the proportional and integral gains for the closed-loop control strategy, and the model-based tuning in turn guides appropriate closed-loop control of the actuator to increase its bandwidth to 200 Hz. The statically and dynamically characterized actuator can aid machine tool structural testing. Moreover, the validated models can instruct the design and development of other higher-performance electro-hydraulic actuators, guide the conversion of the actuator into a damper, and also test other advanced control strategies to further improve actuator performance.

AbstractOne of the most perspective development directions of the aircraft engine is the application of adaptive digital automatic control systems (ACS). The significant element of the adaptation is the correction of mathematical models of both engine and its executive, measuring devices. These models help to solve tasks of control and are a combination of static models and dynamic models, as static models describe relations between parameters at steady-state modes, and dynamic ones characterize deviations of the parameters from static values.The work considers problems of the models’ correction using parametric identification methods. It is shown that the main problem of the precise engine simulation is the correction of the static model. A robust procedure that is based on a wide application of a priori information about performances of the engine and its measuring system is proposed for this purpose. One of many variants of this procedure provides an application of the non-linear thermodynamic model of the working process and estimation of individual corrections to the engine components’ characteristics with further substitution of the thermodynamic model by approximating on-board static model. Physically grounded estimates are obtained based on a priori information setting about the estimated parameters and engine performances, using fuzzy sets.Executive devices (actuators) and the most inertial temperature sensors require correction to their dynamic models. Researches showed, in case that the data for identification are collected during regular operation of ACS, the estimates of dynamic model parameters can be strongly correlated that reasons inadmissible errors.The reason is inside the substantial limitations on transients’ intensity that contain regular algorithms of acceleration/deceleration control. Therefore, test actions on the engine are required. Their character and minimum composition are determined using the derived relations between errors in model coefficients, measurement process, and control action parameters.

Abstract In the paper, a method and results of parameter estimation of the mathematical model of a generating unit operating in the Polish National Power System are presented. Computations of the parameters were carried out based on measurement and simulation of dynamic waveforms of selected quantities of the generating unit. The problem of parameter identification was brought to minimization of the objective function determined by the vector of deviations between the approximated and approximating waveforms computed on the basis of the models expressed by the searched parameters. A hybrid optimization algorithm, being a serial combination of genetic and gradient algorithms, was used for minimization of the objective function. A methodology for filtering the recorded measurement signals is proposed in the paper. Method and results calculation of the sensitivity to changes of the model parameters of selected dynamic waveforms are also presented.

Analysis of power system stabilizer Pareto optimisation-when taking into account the uncertainty of power system mathematical model parameters The paper presents analysis of optimisation results of power system stabilizer (PSS) parameters when taking into account the uncertainty of mathematical model parameters of the power system (PS) elements. The Pareto optimisation was used for optimisation of the system stabilizer parameters. Parameters of five stabilizers of PSS3B type were determined in optimisation process with use of a genetic algorithm with tournament selection. The results obtained were assessed from the point of view of selecting the criterion function. The analysis of influence of the parameter uncertainty on the quality of the results obtained was performed.
