Numerical Assessment of Different Turbulence Models for Slot Jet Impinging on Flat and Concave Surfaces

A numerical study has been carried out for slot jet impinging on flat and concave surfaces. Five turbulence models are employed for the predictions of these strongly strained turbulent flows, namely linear eddy viscosity model (LEVM), low-Re explicit algebraic Reynolds stress model (EASM) and three different V2F models. A bounded formulation for Cμ was also introduced to account for the better prediction of the wall jet development. The studied Reynolds numbers vary from 8,000 to 20,000, and nozzle-to-surface distance (H) is in the range of 1≤H/B≤8. Detailed comparison is made between the results from the models and available experimental data to test the ability of the models in predicting these fluid flow and heat transfer problems.

Abstract The transfer of particles in laminar and turbulent flows has many applications in combustion systems, biological, environmental, nanotechnology. In the present study, a Combined Baffles Quick-Separation Device (CBQSD) is simulated numerically using the Eulerian-Lagrangian method and different turbulence models of RNG k-ε, k-ω, and RSM for 1–140 μm particles. A two-way coupling technique is employed to solve the particles’ flow. The effect of inlet flow velocity, the diameter of the splitter plane, and solid particles’ flow rate on the separation efficiency of the device is examined. The results demonstrate that the RSM turbulence model provides more appropriate results compared to RNG k-ε and k-ω models. Four thousand two hundred particles with the size distribution of 1–140 µm enter the device and 3820 particles are trapped and 380 particles leave the device. The efficiency for particles with a diameter greater than 28 µm is 100%. The complete separation of 22–28 μm particles occurs for flow rates of 10–23.5 g/s, respectively. The results reveal that the separation efficiency increases by increasing the inlet velocity, the device diameter, and the diameter of the particles.

This paper presents a numerical study on turbulent flow and heat transfer in the channels with a novel hybrid cooling structure with miniature V-shaped ribs and dimples on one wall. The heat transfer characteristics, pressure loss and turbulent flow structures in the channels with the rib-dimples with three different rib heights of 0.6 mm, 1.0 mm and 1.5 mm are obtained for the Reynolds numbers ranging from 18,700 to 60,000 by numerical simulations, which are also compared with counterpart of a pure dimpled and pure V ribbed channel. The results show that the overall Nusselt numbers of the V rib-dimple channel with the rib height of 1.5 mm is up to 70% higher than that of the channels with pure dimples. The numerical simulations show that the arrangement of the miniature V rib upstream each dimple induces complex secondary flow near the wall and generates downwashing vortices, which intensifies the flow mixing and turbulent kinetic energy in the dimple, resulting in significant improvement in heat transfer enhancement and uniformness.

In this paper an assessment of the improvement in the prediction of complex turbomachinery flows using a new near-wall Reynolds-stress model is attempted. The turbulence closure used is a near-wall low-turbulence-Reynolds-number Reynolds-stress model, that is independent of the distance-from-the-wall and of the normal-to-the-wall direction. The model takes into account the Coriolis redistribution effect on the Reynolds-stresses. The five mean flow equations and the seven turbulence model equations are solved using an implicit coupled OΔx3 upwind-biased solver. Results are compared with experimental data for three turbomachinery configurations: the NTUA high subsonic annular cascade, the NASA_37 rotor, and the RWTH 1 1/2 stage turbine. A detailed analysis of the flowfield is given. It is seen that the new model that takes into account the Reynolds-stress anisotropy substantially improves the agreement with experimental data, particularily for flows with large separation, while being only 30 percent more expensive than the k−ε model (thanks to an efficient implicit implementation). It is believed that further work on advanced turbulence models will substantially enhance the predictive capability of complex turbulent flows in turbomachinery.

The Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations were solved along with three turbulence models, namely κ-ε, κ-ω, and Reynolds stress models (RSM), to study the fully developed turbulent flows in circular pipes roughened by repeated square ribs. The spacing between the ribs was varied to form three representative types of surface roughness; d–type, intermediate, and k–type. Solutions of these flows at two Reynolds numbers were obtained using the commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software Fluent. The numerical results were validated against experimental measurements and other numerical data published in literature. Extensive investigation of effects of rib spacing and Reynolds number on the pressure and friction resistance, flow and turbulence distribution was presented. The performance of three turbulence models was also compared and discussed.

The quantity of cooling air delivered by the secondary air system to various engine components is usually fixed by cooling requirements at the most arduous operating condition in the flight cycle. Modulation of cooling air would allow optimization of cooling supply at different flight cycle conditions, giving significant performance benefits. Switched vortex valves (SVV) have been proposed for control of air systems [1]. An important characteristics of this device is the absence of any moving part. This offers advantages compared to other systems. This report discusses the numerical study of a typical SVV. The study includes comparison of predicted results with available experimental data and prediction of switching characteristics of the device. In this study two turbulence models namely the Spalart-Allmaras model (SA) and Reynolds stress model (RSM) were used. The RSM showed a good agreement with measured mass flow rate and qualitative agreement with other experimental observations.

Steady Reynolds-averaged Navier--Stokes (RANS) simulations were performed to examine the ability of four turbulence models—realizable k–ε (k–ε), shear-stress transport (SST), Reynolds stress model with linear pressure strain (RSM-LPS), and stress-omega RSM (RSM-τω)—to predict the turbulent flow and heat transfer in a trapezoidal U-duct with and without a staggered array of pin fins. Results generated for the heat-transfer coefficient (HTC) were compared with experimental measurements. For the smooth U-duct, the maximum relative error in the averaged HTC in the up-leg is 2.5% for k–ε, SST, and RSM-τω and 9% for RSM-LPS. In the turn region, the maximum is 50% for k–ε and RSM-LPS, 14.5% for RSM-τω, and 29% for SST. In the down-leg, SST gave the best predictions and RSM-τω being a close second with maximum relative error less than 10%. The ability to predict the separated flow downstream of the turn dominated the performance of the models. For the U-duct with pin fins, SST and RSM-τω predicted the best, and k–ε predicted the least accurate HTCs. For k–ε, the maximum relative error is about 25%, whereas it is 15% for the SST and RSM-τω, and they occur in the turn. In the turn region, the staggered array of pin fins was found to behave like guide vanes in turning the flow. The pin fins also reduced the size of the separated region just after the turn.

A detailed analysis of experimental and numerical results for flow and heat transfer in similar offset strip-fin geometries is presented. Surface-average heat transfer and pressure drop, local Nusselt numbers and skin friction coefficients on the fin surface, instantaneous flow structures, and local time-averaged velocity profiles are contrasted for a range of Reynolds numbers using both prior and new experimental and numerical results. This contrast verifies that a two-dimensional unsteady numerical simulation captures the important features of the flow and heat transfer for a range of conditions. However, flow three-dimensionality appears to become important for Reynolds numbers greater than about 1300, and thermal boundary conditions are important for Reynolds numbers below 1000. The results indicate that boundary layer development, flow separation and reattachment, wake formation, and vortex shedding are all important in this complex geometry.

A numerical study is conducted to examine the vortex structure about a revolving wing in quiescent flow employing a high-fidelity, implicit large eddy simulation (ILES) technique found to be effective in simulating flows that exhibit interspersed regions of laminar, transitional, and turbulent flows. The revolving wing configuration consists of a single, aspect ratio one rectangular plate extended out a distance of 0.5 chords from the origin. Shortly after the onset of the motion, the rotating wing generates a stable and coherent vortex system across the leading edge and wing root that remains throughout the motion. The aerodynamic loads are also analyzed and found to remain mostly constant during the maneuver. Transitional effects on the vortex system are investigated over a range of Reynolds numbers (3,000 < Re < 15,000). It is found that higher Reynolds numbers promote more breakdown of the leading edge and root vortices, but do not alter the stability of the vortex system. The aerodynamic loads also show little sensitivity to Reynolds number with the higher Reynolds numbers producing only moderately higher forces. Comparisons with recent experimental PIV measurements using a PIV-like data reduction technique applied to the computational solution show very favorable agreement with the mid-span velocity and vorticity contours.

Abstract An experimental and numerical study was performed on a Clark Y aerofoil with a 10% chord leading edge Kruger flap to examine its aerodynamic performance at Reynolds numbers of 0·6 × 106, 1 × 106, and 1·6 × 106, to help to identify the forces and moments acting on a basic configuration. A detailed comparison of the numerical and experimental data is presented in this paper. The leading edge flap was effective at high angles of attack with an increase in CL of up to 18% over a conventional no flap configuration and delayed separation by up to 3°. The moments around the Kruger flap rotation point were calculated from the numerical analysis as an initial stage in the design of a UAV passive flap system and they are also presented in the paper.

This research presents a numerical study of turbulent periodic flow and heat transfer in threedimensional isothermalfluxed square duct with diagonal inclined rib inserted. The fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics are presented for Reynolds numbers in the range of 4000 to 20,000. The computations based on the finite volume method, and the SIMPLE algorithm has been implemented. Effects of rib pitch ratios (0.5 to 2) at a single blockage ratio of 0.2 and attack angle of 60o on heat transfer and friction factor in the duct are examined and their results of the inclined rib are also compared with those of the smooth duct. It is found that the inclined rib provides higher heat transfer rate and friction factor than the smooth duct for all cases. In addition, the decreasing of the pitch ratio leads to the rise in the Nusselt number and friction factor.
