Airports, one of the important transportation components in this modern age, are under continuous improvement especially in regard to energy sustainability. While most work is concentrated on large airports, smaller airports which are mostly scattered around rural areas seem to be better opportunities for renewable energy utilization. However, while renewable energy has come into use at airports over the past decade, it has been at a slow pace and has not included storage. A reliable storage system can significantly increase the power reliability of a small airport and make a renewable energy system viable. Acquiring the technical requirements of a facility based on its characteristics enables the designer to evaluate the power source options and develop an efficient storage system. The current paper analytically develops a framework to design and integrate an energy storage method for a renewable system into a small airport facility. The framework details include methods for energy storage which are environmentally acceptable in combination with renewable energy sources to produce electrical power for the on-site facilities. The technical analysis which leads to the sizing of the storage unit initiates with categorizing different methods for energy storage and their applicability to an airport facility for off-grid and on-grid modes. Based on the results and conclusions from the first step, the search is narrowed down to mediums for electricity storage for a wind farm or solar power plant. In such a case, the main applications of the storage unit could be either to supply power to the facility during the transition time from the renewable source to the main grid or to regulate the power frequency of the generation unit. Capacitors and batteries were selected as the two options for the given power requirement of the facility. Considering the wide variety of available technologies and lower costs, the appropriate storage system is proposed for both long term and short term applications. A table is presented to compare available battery technologies and their respective storage capacities.

The current paper presents an energy storage system that stores the excessive energy, provided by a hybrid system of renewable energy sources, in the form of compressed air and thermal heat. Using energy storage systems together with renewable energy sources represents a major challenge that could ensure the transition to a viable economic future and a decarbonized economy. Thermodynamic calculations are conducted to investigate the performance of such systems by using Matlab simulation tools. The results indicate the values of primary and global efficiencies for various operating scenarios for the energy storage systems which use compressed air as medium storage, and shows that these could be very effective systems, proving the possibility to supply to the final user three types of energy: electricity, heat and cold function of his needs.

With the increase in wind power generation and network capacity, Wind farm power fluctuations on the grid greatly. In order to improve the operational stability of wind farm grid, at its outlet to increase the energy storage system for the new environmentally friendly vanadium redox flow battery (VRB) to effectively regulate the grid power. According to the VRB equivalent mathematical model using a bidirectional DC/AC converter as VRB storage system power regulator, the corresponding charge discharge control and energy management strategy are designed , and grid-connected wind farm system with VRB energy storage unit are modeled and simulated. Simulation results show that the fluctuations in wind speed Circumstances, the VRB energy storage system can quickly and effectively smooth the fluctuations of the active power of the wind farm output, and can provide reactive support to the grid, effectively improve the operating performance of wind farm.

Energy storage system (ESS) plays a prominent role in renewable energy (RE) to overcome the intermittent of RE energy condition and improve energy utilization in the power system. However, ESS for residential applications requires specific and different configuration. Hence, this review paper aims to provide information for system builders to decide the best setup configuration of ESS for residential application. In this paper, the aim is to provide an insight into the critical elements of the energy storage technology for residential application. The update on ESS technology, battery chemistry, battery charging, and monitoring system and power inverter technology are reviewed. Then, the operation, the pro, and cons of each variant of these technologies are comprehensively studied. This paper suggested that the ESS for residential ESS requires NMC battery chemistry because it delivers an all-rounded performance as compared to other battery chemistries. The four-stages constant current (FCC) charging technique is recommended because of the fast charging capability and safer than other charging techniques reviewed. Next, the battery management system (BMS) is recommended to adapt in advance machine learning method to estimate the state of charge (SOC), state of health (SOH) and internal temperature (IT) to increase the safety and prolong the lifespan of the batteries. Finally, these recommendations and solutions aimed to improve the utilization of RE energy in power system, especially in residential ESS application and offer the best option that is available on the shelf for the residential ESS application in the future.

A nuclear power plant is one of the power sources that shares a large portion of base-load. However, as the proportion of renewable energy increases, nuclear power plants will be required to generate power more flexibly due to the intermittency of the renewable energy sources. This paper reviews a layout thermally integrating the liquid air energy storage system with a nuclear power plant. To evaluate the performance realistically while optimizing the layout, operating nuclear power plant conditions are used. After revisiting the analysis, the optimized performance of the proposed system is predicted to achieve 59.96% of the round-trip efficiency. However, it is further shown that external environmental conditions could deteriorate the performance. For the design of liquid air energy storage-nuclear power plant integrated systems, both the steam properties of the linked plants and external factors should be considered.

Electrical grid is no longer featured in a conventional way nowadays. Today, the growing of new technologies, primarily the distributed renewable energy sources and electric vehicles, has been integrated with the distribution networks causing several technical issues. As a result, the penetration of the renewable energy sources can be limited by the utility companies. Smart grid has been emerged as one of the solutions to the technical issues, hence allowing the usage of renewable and improving the energy efficiency of the electrical grid. The challenge is to develop an intelligent management system to maintain the balance between the generation and demand. This task can be performed by using energy storage system. As part of the smart grid, the deployment of energy storage system plays a critical role in stabilizing the voltage and frequency of the networks with renewable energy sources and electric vehicles. This book chapter illustrates the revolution and the roles of energy storage for improving the network performance.

Recently, more and more people realize the importance of environment protection. Electric power generation systems using renewable energy sources have an advantage of no greenhouse effect gas emission. Among all the choices, wind power can offer an economic and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional methods of power supply. As a result, wind energy generation, utilization and its grid penetration in electrical grid is increasing world wide. The wind generated power is always fluctuating due to its time varying nature and causing stability problem. Inserting energy storage system into large scale wind farm to eliminate the fluctuation becomes a solution for developing large scale renewable energy system connected with grid. The topology diagram and control strategy are presented in this paper. According to the simulation result, it could be indicated that embedding energy storage system into wind power system could improve the access friendly and extend system functions. This paper shows that integrating energy storage system into wind power system will build a more reliable and flexible system for power grid.
