Online Powermanagement With Embedded Optimization for a Multi-Source Hybrid With Dynamic Power Sharing Between Components

The need for the development of online powermanagement strategies applicable to real-time hybrid powertrain systems is an important issue in the transportation sector. A powermanagement strategy alone does not necessarily ensure optimal power distribution amongst the drive train components. Thus optimization of powemanagement is another task which needs to be considered in terms of multiple objectives. Apart from online applicability of powermanagement optimization, a consideration of useful combinations of drivetrain components such as two storage elements together with a primary source may also be useful. In this contribution, an online powermanagement strategy is applied to a three-source hybrid electric powertrain. An optimization of controller parameters with embedded-online optimization is proposed.

From a residential point of view, home energy management (HEM) is an essential requirement in order to diminish peak demand and utility tariffs. The integration of renewable energy sources (RESs) together with battery energy storage systems (BESSs) and central battery storage system (CBSS) may promote energy and cost minimization. However, proper home appliance scheduling along with energy storage options is essential to significantly decrease the energy consumption profile and overall expenditure in real-time operation. This paper proposes a cost-effective HEM scheme in the microgrid framework to promote curtailing of energy usage and relevant utility tariff considering both energy storage and renewable sources integration. Usually, the household appliances have different runtime preferences and duration of operation based on user demand. This work considers a simulator designed in the C++ platform to address the domestic customer’s HEM issue based on usages priorities. The positive aspects of merging RESs, BESSs, and CBSSs with the proposed optimal power sharing algorithm (OPSA) are evaluated by considering three distinct case scenarios. Comprehensive analysis of each scenario considering the real-time scheduling of home appliances is conducted to substantiate the efficacy of the outlined energy and cost mitigation schemes. The results obtained demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm to enable energy and cost savings up to 37.5% and 45% in comparison to the prevailing methodology.

Abstract Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs), particularly those with a hybrid electric powertrain, have the potential to significantly improve vehicle energy savings in real-world driving conditions. In particular, the Eco-Driving problem seeks to design optimal speed and power usage profiles based on available information from connectivity and advanced mapping features to minimize the fuel consumption over an itinerary. This paper presents a hierarchical multi-layer Model Predictive Control (MPC) approach for improving the fuel economy of a 48V mild-hybrid powertrain in a connected vehicle environment. Approximate Dynamic Programming (ADP) is used to solve the Receding Horizon Optimal Control Problem (RHOCP), where the terminal cost for the RHOCP is approximated as the base-policy obtained from the long-term optimization. The controller was tested virtually (with deterministic and Monte Carlo simulation) across multiple real-world routes, demonstrating energy savings of more than 20%. The controller was then deployed on a test vehicle equipped with a rapid prototyping embedded controller. In-vehicle testing confirm the energy savings obtained in simulation and demonstrate the real-time ability of the controller.

This paper presents an experimental demonstration of a novel real-time Energy Management System (EMS) for inverter-based microgrids to achieve optimal economic operation using a simple dynamic algorithm without offline optimization process requirements. The dynamic algorithm solves the economic dispatch problem offering an adequate stability performance and an optimal power reference tracking under sudden load and generation changes. Convergence, optimality and frequency regulation properties of the real-time EMS are shown, and the effectiveness and compatibility with inner and primary controllers are validated in experiments, showing better performance on optimal power tracking and frequency regulation than conventional droop control power sharing techniques.

With increasing changes in the contemporary energy system, it becomes essential to test the autonomous control strategies for distributed energy resources in a controlled environment to investigate power grid stability. Power hardware-in-the-loop (PHIL) concept is an efficient approach for such evaluations in which a virtually simulated power grid is interfaced to a real hardware device. This strongly coupled software-hardware system introduces obstacles that need attention for smooth operation of the laboratory setup to validate robust control algorithms for decentralized grids. This paper presents a novel methodology and its implementation to develop a test-bench for a real-time PHIL simulation of a typical power distribution grid to study the dynamic behavior of the real power components in connection with the simulated grid. The application of hybrid simulation in a single software environment is realized to model the power grid which obviates the need to simulate the complete grid with a lower discretized sample-time. As an outcome, an environment is established interconnecting the virtual model to the real-world devices. The inaccuracies linked to the power components are examined at length and consequently a suitable compensation strategy is devised to improve the performance of the hardware under test (HUT). Finally, the compensation strategy is also validated through a simulation scenario.

The fuel economy and emission advantages of diesel-electric hybrid powertrain modifications and an auxiliary fuel cell subsystem over those of a conventional midsize crossover SUV are discussed. The vehicle architecture is representative of one selected for the multiyear ChallengeX intercollegiate student design contest. To analyze the fuel economy, a simple “top-level” approach is used to estimate the fuel economy characteristics and performance potential to illustrate the advantages of the hybrid-electric powertrain configuration and the auxiliary fuel cells. Chained energy efficiency assumptions for the powertrain components lead to gasoline equivalent fuel mileage estimates. In the emission analysis, the greenhouse gases, regulated emissions, and energy use in transportation model is used to track the environmental impact of the powertrain on a well-to-wheels basis.
