Blended Spaces: Collaborative Work and Computer Supported Learning and Tools

Individualized and cooperative design combined with hybrid design tools, have the capacity to act as the missing link between humans, society, and technology (STS). The blended design environments (spaces) entail innovative interactive software solutions and design tools to create meaningful communication, experiences, personal involvement and social inclusion within various contexts and/or domains. In this paper we present preliminary data on two research experiments, user modeling and participant observation. The study is based on a comparison between a loosely (i.e. raw) and a formalized (i.e. hyper design) structured approach facilitated in blended spaces (BS) for design and engineering. Findings, results and feedback on interaction (IxD), usability (UA) and experiences (UX) are discussed along design environment parameters, strategy and contextualization.

This article presents the results of a teacher leader’s pedagogical practices in a pilot test on innovation implemented in a Costa Rican primary school. The pilot test was conducted due to the need of renewing the technological equipment in schools belonging to Conectándonos MEP-FQT project run by the Department of Research, Development, and Implementation of the Ministry of Public Education and Quiros-Tanzi Foundation. This pilot test aimed to diagnose the pedagogical practices of a teacher leader through the exploration and use of didactic digital resources of Clamshell-type laptops and an interactive projector. This equipment was used to favor the teacher’s pedagogical mediation through the access, selection, and use of didactic digital resources. To collect the information, we used non-participant observation guides, a questionnaire with open questions, and a bibliographic review of the teacher’s didactic planning. The systematization of the observation guides permitted to put in evidence, naturally and concretely, the aspects covered by the objectives of the study. The information was analyzed with a qualitative approach of phenomenological type. This approach defined categories and subcategories that, later, were linked to establish coincidences, similarities, differences, and the presence or absence of terms and phrases. Likewise, the data were interpreted to relate the information collected through the analysis and the theoretical patterns. This interpretation permitted, afterwards, to reflect on the studied categories. Finally, the main conclusion drawn from the pilot test was that the collaborative work between students was promoted and the learning objectives in the didactic planning drawn up by the teacher were achieved.

This article inductively develops a model of how farmers market organizations can contribute to reduce food waste, fight poverty, and improve public health through innovative Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) practices enabled by networked activity systems. To this aim, a ten-year longitudinal case study of one of the biggest Italian farmers markets has been conducted, based on triangulated data from participant observation, interviews, and internal documents collection. This study suggests that farmers market organizations are in the position to leverage their inter-organizational relationships, institutional role, and power to build collaborative networks with businesses, government bodies, and charities, so that concrete CSR-based virtuous circles on surplus food donation are triggered at the organizational field level. Answering the call from United Nation Goals for successful examples on SDG 12, this case presents how several CSR levers can have a social and environmental impact allowing farmers and their market organizations to increase their efficiency and accountability to the local community, improve processes, reduce food waste, and contribute to public health and social inclusion. CSR actions have co-evolved with significant changes in organizational logics and identity, thus enabling accountability to the local community and innovative network-level auditing of the relevant organizational processes.

AbstractThe very large development of home and domestic electronic appliances as well as portable device has led the microelectronics industry to evolve in two complimentary directions : “More Moore” with the continuous race towards extremely small dimensions hence the development of SoCs (System on Chip) and more recently a new direction that we could name “More than Moore” with the integration of devices that were laying outside the chips and here the creation of SiPs (System in Package).These two approaches are not in competition one with the other: the paper will show some examples of integrated nano systems that use several SoCs.The technology we have developed is called Silicon Based System in Package. The first products using this technology are now in volume production and used mainly in the field of wireless communications.This new technology relies on four pillars. Passive integration is the first. Very efficient and high quality factor capacitors and inductors have been integrated, allowing the creation of complete modules including active devices, filters and decoupling capacitors. High-density MOS capacitors with 1-1000 nF capacitance, and as high values as 25-250+ nF/mm2 specific capacitance have been fabricated in macroporous Si-wafers, containing over 1 billion macropores. Typically an ESR less than 100 mÙ and an ESL less than 25 pH were found for capacitors over 10 nF. This novel concept is an important step forward in improving the stability of power-amplifier modules by replacing conventional SMD technology.Whereas generations with capacitors density of up to 100 nF/mm2 will be using “conventional” materials and structures, the next steps in the roadmap will call for new 3D structures and materials such as high-k dielectrics.The second element is advanced packaging. New technologies, such as the assembly of Silicon chips onto other Silicon chips, also named “double flip chip” have been developed. This has been made possible thanks to the combination of the most advanced microbumping and die placement techniques. In addition to a tremendous reduction of size (up to a factor of 10 to 20) these techniques have also brought a better repeatability of system performance.The third element has been the development of design tools that allow a seamless system design for engineers used to IC design tools and flows. Our Design Environment allows co design of multiple technologies chips and their integration in a single system. This IC-like Design Environment has contributed a lot to the adoption of the technology.Testing is the fourth element and is one of the economical enablers of the technology. The key words are: “known good die”, RF test, system test? Some innovative RF probing and full on wafer subsystem test will be shown. Even though efficient test is not vital for the technical feasibility of this system integration, it becomes very quickly one of the most important enablers, especially when we deal with very high volumes of production. The conclusion of the paper will be an open door to the future. Some innovations like the integration of light or even energy storage inside our SiPs will be presented.

Abstract Background and Objectives Dance is increasingly being implemented in residential long-term care to improve health and function. However, little research has explored the potential of dance programs to support social inclusion by supporting embodied self-expression, creativity, and social engagement of persons living with dementia and their families. Research Design and Methods This was a qualitative sequential multiphase study of Sharing Dance Seniors, a dance program that includes a suite of remotely streamed dance sessions that are delivered weekly to participants in long-term care and community settings. Our analysis focused on the participation of 67 persons living with dementia and 15 family carers in residential long-term care homes in Manitoba, Canada. Data included participant observation, video-recordings, focus groups, and interviews; all data was analyzed thematically. Results We identified two themes: playfulness and sociability. Playfulness refers to the ways that the participants let go of what is ‘real’ and became immersed in the narrative of a particular dance, often adding their own style. Sociability captures the ways in which the narrative approach of the Sharing Dance Seniors program encourages connectivity/intersubjectivity between participants and their community; participants co-constructed and collaboratively animated the narrative of the dances. Discussion and Implications Our findings highlight the playful and imaginative nature of how persons living with dementia engage with dance and demonstrate how this has the potential to challenge stigma associated with dementia and support social inclusion. This underscores the urgent need to make dance programs such as Sharing Dance Seniors more widely accessible to persons living with dementia everywhere.

Participatory health interventions have long been advocated as an approach to help marginalised community members exercise their rights as citizens, including access to health care. More than two decades ago, the Roma health mediation programme was established in Romania as a participatory community health intervention. Mediators are employed specifically to act as intermediaries between ‘Roma patients’ and local authorities or health professionals, with the overall aim to increase trust and improve access to health care. Based on data gathered during a year of ethnographic fieldwork with Roma health mediators in Romania, including participant observation and interviews, this article analyses the social processes by which participatory approaches produce both social inclusion and exclusion. It illustrates how mediators exceeded their remit of health and attempted to discipline communities into forms of neoliberal citizenship. Mediators reframed access to health care not as a right that community members already have, but as a benefit that must be individually ‘earned’ through the fulfilment of neoliberal citizenship. The article argues that far from being an ‘empowering tool’, community participation can extend the power of governing institutions and thereby may in fact contribute to the maintenance of a political status quo that perpetuates the precarisation of marginalised communities.

Purpose Understanding social organisations requires considerable effort because of their complex reality. The purpose of this paper is to analyse the performance and amateur form of management of an organisation of scavengers, with significant results for society. Design/methodology/approach This study is a qualitative in-depth case study. Data were collected through ethnographic interviews, non-participant observation and document analysis. The association of scavengers in question was identified as being strongly representative of the 23 similar associations in Curitiba. The city is the first Brazilian capital to create conditions for direct disposal of selective waste collected by waste pickers, as recommended by the National Solid Waste Policy. Findings Three main aspects of evidence are highlighted in the proposed model: unique features, performance management and multiplicity of practices. The findings showed a strong presence of utilitarian behaviour due to the need of the members of the organisation to generate income for survival, forcing social and environmental concerns into the background. The combination of community values, informal practices, collective learning and amateur management has had a positive effect on the social organisation’s performance. Social implications The outcomes were identified for individuals, the community and society by contributing to social inclusion, economic growth and environmental care. Originality/value The differentiated approach lies in the convergence between performance and amateur management in social organisations, with relevant environmental, economic and social results. A model is proposed to demonstrate the complex relationship between unique features, multiplicity of practices and performance with regard to the amateur management analysed in this study.

Laid down in this paper are the foundations on which the design of engineering systems, in the presence of an uncontrollable changing environment, can be based. The changes in environment conditions are accounted for by means of robustness. To this end, a theoretical framework as well as a general methodology for model-based robust design are proposed. Within this framework, all quantities involved in a design task are classified into three sets: the design variables (DV), grouped in vector x, which are to be assigned values as an outcome of the design task; the design-environment parameters (DEP), grouped in vector p, over which the designer has no control; and the performance functions (PF), grouped in vector f, representing the functional relations among performance, DV, and DEP. A distinction is made between global robust design and local robust design, this paper focusing on the latter. The robust design problem is formulated as the minimization of a norm of the covariance matrix of the variations in PF upon variations in the DEP, aka noise in the literature on robust design. Moreover, one pertinent concept is introduced: design isotropy. We show that isotropic designs lead to robustness, even in the absence of knowledge of the statistical properties of the variations of the DEP. To demonstrate our approach, a few examples are included.

Structured, multidisciplinary approaches to chronic disease management (CDM) in primary care, supported by eHealth tools, show improved clinical outcomes, yet the uptake of eHealth tools remains low. The adoption of cdmNet, an eHealth tool for chronic disease management, in general practice settings, was explored. This was a qualitative case study in three general practice clinics in Melbourne, Australia. Methods included non-participant observation, reflexive note taking and semi-structured interviews with GPs, non-GP clinical staff, administrative staff and patients with chronic conditions. Data were analysed iteratively and results were reviewed at regular team meetings. Findings highlighted the significance of clinical and organisational routines in determining practice readiness for embedding innovations. In particular, clinical routines that supported a structured approach to CDM involving team-based care, allocation of resources, training and leadership were fundamental to facilitating the adoption of the eHealth tool. Non-GP roles were found to be key in developing routines that facilitated the adoption of cdmNet within a structured approach to CDM. Practice managers, administrators and clinicians should first focus on routinising processes in primary care practices that support structured and team-based processes for CDM because without these processes, new technologies will not be embedded.

Participation in sport can act as a means or context for enhancing the social inclusion of migrants and refugees. Research has examined if and how mainstream sport organizations’ practices of engaging newly arrived migrants and refugees are effective in supporting participation in sustainable and culturally appropriate ways. Little is known, however, about the impact of community-driven sports events on sustainable participation by migrants and refugees. This paper examines this question with an analytical focus on community sustainability and the role of culture in sport event sustainability practices. The authors draw on ethnographic fieldwork with the Amsterdam Futsal Tournament (AFT), a sports event organized by Somali diaspora community members, to consider how event organizers and participants seek to promote cultural sustainability in a diaspora sport context. The fieldwork comprised 49 semi-structured interviews, participant observation before, during and after the event, and digital ethnography of event-related social media. The findings show the importance of cultural sustainability as a driver of community-driven sport sustainability practices, but also indicate how this driver is closely linked to addressing organizational and individual sustainability. The analysis demonstrates how the AFT can serve as a catalyst for the expansion of sport and community events among Somali diaspora communities.
