This paper presents a new Bistable Collapsible Compliant Mechanism (BCCM) that is utilized in a Lamina-Emergent Frustum. The mechanism is based on transforming a polygon spiral into spatial frustum shape using a mechanism composed of compliant links and joints that exhibits bistable behavior. A number of mechanism types (graphs) were considered to implement the shape-morphing spiral, including 4-bar, 6-bar, and 8-bar chains. Our design requirements permitted the selection of a particular 8-bar chain as the basis for the BCCM. Bistable behavior was added to the mechanism by introducing a compliant link that functions as a compression spring as the mechanism morphs. Parametric CAD was used to perform the dimensional synthesis. The design was successfully prototyped.

The design was successfully prototyped. We anticipate that the mechanism may be useful in commercial small animal enclosures or as a frame for a solar still.

This paper presents a new design concept for bistability that can be implemented as a reverse-fold origami mechanism or as a spherical four-bar mechanism. The design is based on the conceptual overlap between a certain simple class of origami mechanisms (the reverse-fold) and a class of spherical change-point mechanisms. Using both a partially compliant spherical mechanism and a piece of origami made with two sheets of paper, we implement the design concept for bistable behavior. The design concept consists in adapting planar two position synthesis to spherical mechanisms and in using a formal analogy between spherical mechanisms and certain simple origami folds. The dimensional synthesis of these two mechanisms is performed using parametric CAD. The design concept was successfully prototyped both as origami and as a partially compliant spherical mechanism.

A hybrid-driven five-bar linkage mechanism with one input cycle corresponding to two output cycles is presented. The proposed linkage mechanism is driven by a constant-speed motor and a linear motor, respectively. The output link can generate two same required output cycles during a single input cycle, while the rotational input link rotates with a constant angular speed, and the linear input link follows a reciprocating motion along a specified linear guide fixed on the rotational input link. The configuration, displacement relationship between the input and output links, and conditions of mobility of this proposed mechanism were studied, and a kinematic analysis was performed. The selection of the instantaneous motion trajectory of the linear input link and an optimal dimensional synthesis are also described. An example is provided to verify the feasibility and effectiveness of this methodology.

Significant reduction in cost and time of bistable mechanism design can be achieved by understanding their bistable behavior. This paper presents bistable compliant mechanisms whose pseudo-rigid-body models (PRBM) are four-bar mechanisms with a torsional spring. Stable and unstable equilibrium positions are calculated for such four-bar mechanisms, defining their bistable behavior for all possible permutations of torsional spring locations. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and simulation is used to illustrate the bistable behavior of a compliant mechanism with a straight compliant member, using stored energy plots. These results, along with the four-bar and the compliant mechanism information, can then be used to design a bistable compliant mechanism to meet specified requirements.

A novel method for designing a seven-bar linkage based on the optimization of centrodes is presented in this paper. The proposed method is applied to the design of a pure-rolling cutting mechanism, wherein close interrelation between the contacting lines and centrodes of two pure-rolling bodies is formulated and the genetic optimization algorithm is adopted for the dimensional synthesis of the mechanism. The optimization is conducted to minimize the error between mechanism centrodes and the expected trajectories, subject to the design requirements of the opening distance, the maximum amount of overlap error, and peak value of shearing force. An optimal solution is obtained and the analysis results show that the horizontal slipping and standard deviation of the lowest moving points of the upper shear blade have been reduced by 78.0% and 80.1% and the peak value of shear stress decreases by 29%, which indicate better cutting performance and long service life.

Abstract We revisit the dimensional synthesis of a spatial two-link, two revolute-jointed serial chain for path following applications, focussing on the systematic development of the design equations and their analytic solution for the three precision point synthesis problem. The kinematic design equations are obtained from the equations of loop-closure for end-effector position in rotation-matrix/vector form at the three precision points. These design equations form a rank-deficient linear system in the link-vector components. The nullspace of the rank deficient linear system is then deduced analytically and interpreted geometrically. Tools from linear algebra are applied to systematically create the auxiliary conditions required for synthesis and to verify consistency. An analytic procedure for obtaining the link-vector components is then developed after a suitable selection of free choices. Optimization over the free choices is possible to permit the matching of additional criteria and explored further. Examples of the design of optimal two-link coupled spatial R-R dyads are presented where the end-effector interpolates three positions exactly and closely approximates an entire desired path.

Abstract This paper presents a number of systematically designed compliant topologies and discusses how the intrinsic kinematic behavior can be extracted from them. This is then applied to the number synthesis of linkages. Many techniques developed for number synthesis of linkages enumerate numerous possible kinematic chains, but few can select the best configuration among them. A systematic computational approach that can select the best configuration based on kinetostatic design specifications is presented here. This is a serendipitous result that transpired when two well-developed design techniques for compliant mechanisms were combined. A number of examples with non-intuitive design specifications are included to illustrate the new approach to number synthesis. The examples also illustrate that the kinematic behavior is aptly captured in the elastic mechanics-based topology optimization method to compliant mechanism design. Dimensional synthesis is also accomplished in the same procedure, which is an added benefit of this approach.

Half bridge switching power supply is a kind of form in the family. It has the characteristics of good voltage output, high efficiency, the simple circuit and so on. On the design of the half bridge switching power supply, the key and difficult point is the design of switch transformer. Taking the switch transformer of a half bridge switching power supply as the research object and based on the design requirements, this paper aims to realize the calculation of the coil turns and the selection of core in switching transformer. the design of switch transformer of the push-pull switch power supply has been completed by circuit simulation and implementation.

This paper uses rigid-body mechanism topologies to synthesize fully distributed compliant mechanisms that approximate a shape change defined by a set of morphing curves in different positions. For a shape-change problem, a rigid-body mechanism solution is generated first to provide the base topology. This base topology defines a preselected design space for the structural optimization in one of two ways so as to obtain a compliant mechanism solution that is typically superior to the local minimum solutions obtained from searching more expansive design spaces. In the first strategy, the dimensional synthesis directly determines the optimal size and shape of the distributed compliant mechanism having exactly the base topology. In the second strategy, an initial mesh network established from the base topology is used to generate different topologies (in addition to the base), and an improved design domain parameterization scheme ensures that only topologies with well-connected structures are evaluated. The deformation of each generated compliant mechanism is evaluated using geometrically nonlinear finite element analysis (FEA). A two-objective genetic algorithm (GA) is employed to find a group of viable designs that trade off minimizing shape matching error with minimizing maximum stress. The procedure's utility is demonstrated with three practical examples—the first two approximating open-curve profiles of an adaptive antenna and the third approximating closed-curve profiles of a morphing wing.
