Origami-Based Self-Folding Structure Fabrication Based on 3D Printing on Polystyrene Films

Self-folding structures have unique advantages such as reconfiguration capability during their usage. Such advantages can be beneficial for a wide variety of applications including biomedical and electronics products. However, how to fabricate and actuate self-folding structures is still an ongoing research topic. In the paper a simple fabrication approach based on a 3D printing process is presented for the fabrication of self-folding structures that can be actuated using a constrain-based thermo responsive mechanism. A self-folding structure fabricated by our method is an origami sheet with multiple layers. The middle layer of the origami sheet is a pre-strained polystyrene film, which can have a large shrinkage when exposing to heat. Both its upper and bottom surfaces are covered with desired patterns in cured plastic resin. A foldable hinge is achieved by using the cured resin to constrain the shrinkage of the film on one side while the other side of the film is exposed to the heating environment. A model of the related folding mechanism is developed. Based on it, a hinge structure design method is presented for a given folding angle. Various experiments are performed to verify the folding control of designed self-folding structures. Possible applications of the developed self-folding structures are also demonstrated and discussed.

The thermo-actuating structures that are designed and fabricated by our method are two-dimensional (2D) origami sheets, which have multiple printed layers. Both its top and bottom surfaces are covered with cured resin that is printed in designed shapes. A foldable hinge is achieved by constraining the shrinkage of the film on one side while allowing the shrinkage of the film on another side when the origami sheet is exposed to a heating environment. Heuristic models of hinge's folding angles are developed based on the related folding mechanism. A 2D origami sheet design and fabrication method is presented for a given 3D structure. Various experimental tests are performed to verify the self-folding performance of the designed and fabricated origami sheets. Techniques on improving folding angle control are also discussed with possible applications.

In a radio frequency (RF) system, it is possible to use variable inductors for providing tunable or selective frequency range. Variable inductors can be implemented by the microelectromechanical system (MEMS) process or by using transistors as switches to change the routing of coils or coupling quantities. In this paper, we investigated the design method of a variable inductor by using MOS transistors to switch the main coil paths and the secondary coupled coils. We observed the effects of different metal layers, turn numbers, and layout arrangements for secondary-coupled coils and compared their characteristics on the inductances and quality factors. We implemented two chips in the 0.18 m CMOS process technology for each kind of arrangement for verification. One inductor can achieve inductance values from about 300 pH to 550 pH, and the other is between 300 pH and 575 pH, corresponding to 59.3% and 62.5%, respectively, inductance variation range at 4 GHz frequency. Additionally, their fine step sizes of the switched inductances are from 0.5% to 6% for one design, and 1% to 12.5% for the other. We found that both designs achieved a large inductance tuning range and moderate inductance step sizes with a slight difference behavior on the inductance variation versus frequency.

AbstractCurrent studies on cable harness layouts have mainly focused on cable harness route planning. However, the topological structure of a cable harness is also extremely complex, and the branch structure of the cable harness can affect the route of the cable harness layout. The topological structure design of the cable harness is a key to such a layout. In this paper, a novel multi-branch cable harness layout design method is presented, which unites the probabilistic roadmap method (PRM) and the genetic algorithm. First, the engineering constraints of the cable harness layout are presented. An obstacle-based PRM used to construct non-interference and near to the surface roadmap is then described. In addition, a new genetic algorithm is proposed, and the algorithm structure of which is redesigned. In addition, the operation probability formula related to fitness is proposed to promote the efficiency of the branch structure design of the cable harness. A prototype system of a cable harness layout design was developed based on the method described in this study, and the method is applied to two scenarios to verify that a quality cable harness layout can be efficiently obtained using the proposed method. In summary, the cable harness layout design method described in this study can be used to quickly design a reasonable topological structure of a cable harness and to search for the corresponding routes of such a harness.

This paper discusses a case study of a design and evaluation of a change management system at a large Telecommunications Corporation. The design and evaluation were done using the facilitated genetic algorithm (a parallel design method) and user decision style analysis. During the facilitated genetic algorithm the design team followed the procedure of the genetic algorithm. Usability was evaluated by applying user decision style analysis to the designed system. The design is compared with an existing system and with one designed by an analyst. The change management system designed by the facilitated genetic algorithm took less time to design and decision style analysis indicated it would be easier to use than the other two systems.

Buckling design of axially compressed cylindrical shells is still a challenging subject considering the high imperfection-sensitive characteristic in this kind of structure. With the development of various design methods, the energy barrier concept dealing with buckling of imperfection-sensitive cylindrical shells exhibits a promising prospect in recent years. In this study, buckling design of imperfection-sensitive cylindrical shells under axial compression based on the energy barrier approach is systematically investigated. The methodology about buckling design based on the energy barrier approach is described in detail first taking advantage of the cylindrical shells whose buckling loads have been extensively tested. Then, validation and discussion about this buckling design method have been carried out by the numerical and experimental analyses on the cylindrical shells with different geometrical and boundary imperfections. Results in this study together with the available experimental data have verified the reliability and advantage of the buckling design method based on energy barrier approach. A design criterion based on the energy barrier approach is therefore established and compared with the other criteria. Results indicate that buckling design based on energy barrier approach can be used as an efficient way in the lightweight design of thin-shell structures.

A design method of modular joint is proposed according to the complicated structure, line exposed and heavier characteristics of multi-DOF (degree of freedom) mechanical arm. In this paper, the design of modular joint was carried on and a model of six-DOF mechanical arm was built through the research on the structure of mechanical arm. On this basis, dynamics simulation will be carried. The results show that the modular design method simplified the structure of the mechanical arm, the dynamics simulation proved it was feasible for the structure design and drive selection.

Medical and many other applications require small-volume setups enabling terahertz imaging. Therefore, we aim to develop a device for the in-reflection examination of the samples. Thus, in this article, we focus on the diffractive elements for efficient redirection and focusing of the THz radiation. A terahertz diffractive optical structure has been designed, optimized, manufactured (using extrusion-based 3D printing) and tested. Two manufacturing methods have been used—direct printing of the structures from PA12, and casting of the paraffin structures out of 3D-printed molds. Also, the limitations of the off-axis focusing have been discussed. To increase the efficiency, an iterative algorithm has been proposed that optimizes off-axis structures to focus the radiation into small focal spots located far from the optical axis, at an angle of more than 30 degrees. Moreover, the application of higher-order kinoform structure design allowed the maintaining of the smallest details of the manufactured optical element, using 3D printing techniques.

This paper describes our work on a small, hand-launched, solar-powered unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) suitable for low temperatures and high altitudes, which has the perpetual flight potential for conservation missions for rare animals in the plateau area in winter. Firstly, the conceptual design method of a small, solar-powered UAV based on energy balance is proposed, which is suitable for flight in high-altitude and low-temperature area. The solar irradiance model, which can reflect the geographical location and time, was used. Based on the low-temperature discharge test of the battery, a battery weight model considering the influence of low temperature on the battery performance was proposed. Secondly, this paper introduces the detailed design of solar UAV for plateau area, including layout design, structure design, load, and avionics. To increase the proportion of solar cells covered, the ailerons were removed and a rudder was used to control both roll and yaw. Then, the dynamics model of an aileron-free layout UAV was developed, and the differences in maneuverability and stability of aileron-free UAV in plateau and plain areas were analyzed. The control law and trajectory tracking control law were designed for the aileron-free UAV. Finally, the flight test was conducted in Qiangtang, Tibet, at an altitude of 4500 m, China’s first solar-powered UAV to take off and land above 4500 m on the plateau in winter (−30 °C). The test data showed the success of the scheme, validated the conceptual design method and the success of the control system for aileron-free UAV, and analyzed the feasibility of perpetual flight carrying different loads according to the flight energy consumption data.
