Incremental Inspection for Microrobotic Quality Assurance

This paper addresses inspection techniques that can be performed by microrobots used for fabricating three dimensional structures. In contrast to most commercial rapid prototyping processes, the parallelism afforded by microrobot teams allows incremental inspection of structures during assembly. In the present case, this approach is applied to parts fabricated from carbon fiber struts bonded with UV-cured epoxy. Preliminary tests involving thermal and vibrational inspection methods are described and compared with the results of FEA models of the joints. Vibrational inspection performed by microrobots and recorded using a directional microphone, characterizes bond joint natural frequency with good resolution (an average measurement standard deviation of 5Hz over a range of 650–1215 Hz). These effective stiffness measurements are correlated with ultimate bond strength as well. The measurements are sufficient to distinguish between joints that do or do not have desired amounts of adhesive.

The paper points out the advantages of rapid prototyping for improving the performances/constructive optimization of mixing devices used in process industries, here exemplified to propeller types ones. The multidisciplinary optimization of the propeller profile affords its design using parametric CAD methods. Starting from the mathematical curve equations proposed for the blade profile, it was determined its three-dimensional virtual model. The challenge has been focused on the variation of propeller pitch and external diameter. Three dimensional ranges were manufactured using the additive manufacturing process with Marker Boot 3D printer. The mixing performances were tested on the mixing equipment measuring the minimum rotational speed and the correspondent shaft torque for complete suspension achieved for each of the three models. The virtual and rapid prototyping method is newly proposed by the authors to obtain the basic data for scale up of the mixing systems, in the case of flexible production (of low quantities), in which both the nature and concentration of the constituents in the final product varies often. It is an efficient and low cost method for the rapid identification of the optimal mixing device configuration, which contributes to the costs reduction and to the growing of the output.

The present work introduces an analysis of the measurement and model effects that exist in monopile scour protection experiments with repeated small scale tests. The damage erosion is calculated using the three dimensional global damage number S3D and subarea damage number S3D,i. Results show that the standard deviation of the global damage number σ(S3D)=0.257 and is approximately 20% of the mean S3D, and the standard deviation of the subarea damage number σ(S3D,i)=0.42 which can be up to 33% of the mean S3D. The irreproducible maximum wave height, chaotic flow field and non-repeatable armour layer construction are regarded as the main reasons for the occurrence of strong model effects. The measurement effects are limited to σ(S3D)=0.039 and σ(S3D,i)=0.083, which are minor compared to the model effects.

The Gaussian vertical backscatter (GVB) model has a pivotal role in describing the forest vertical structure more accurately, which is reflected by P-band polarimetric interferometric synthetic aperture radar (Pol-InSAR) with strong penetrability. The model uses a three-dimensional parameter space (forest height, Gaussian mean representing the strongest backscattered power elevation, and the corresponding standard deviation) to interpret the forest vertical structure. This paper establishes a two-dimensional GVB model by simplifying the three-dimensional one. Specifically, the two-dimensional GVB model includes the following three cases: the Gaussian mean is located at the bottom of the canopy, the Gaussian mean is located at the top of the canopy, as well as a constant volume profile. In the first two cases, only the forest height and the Gaussian standard deviation are variable. The above approximation operation generates a two-dimensional volume only coherence solution space on the complex plane. Based on the established two-dimensional GVB model, the three-baseline inversion is achieved without the null ground-to-volume ratio assumption. The proposed method improves the performance by 18.62% compared to the three-baseline Random Volume over Ground (RVoG) model inversion. In particular, in the area where the radar incidence angle is less than 0.6 rad, the proposed method improves the inversion accuracy by 34.71%. It suggests that the two-dimensional GVB model reduces the GVB model complexity while maintaining a strong description ability.

Rapid prototyping refers to building three dimensional parts in a tool-less, layer by layer manner using the CAD geometry of the part. Additive Manufacturing (AM) is the name given to the application of rapid prototyping technologies to produce functional, end use items. Since AM is relatively new area of manufacturing processes, various processes are being developed and analyzed for their performance (mainly speed and accuracy). This paper deals with the design of a new benchmark part to analyze the flatness of parts produced on High Speed Sintering (HSS) which is a novel Additive Manufacturing process and is currently being developed at Loughborough University. The designed benchmark part comprised of various features such as cubes, holes, cylinders, spheres and cones on a flat base and the build material used for these parts was nylon 12 powder. Flatness and curvature of the base of these parts were measured using a coordinate measuring machine (CMM) and the results are discussed in relation to the operating parameters of the process.The result show changes in the flatness of part with the depth of part in the bed which is attributed to the thermal gradient within the build envelope during build.
