Maximizing Coverage for Mobile Robots While Conserving Energy

This paper presents a method to compare area coverage paths in the context of energy efficiency. We examine cover-age paths created from the Boustrophedon Decomposition and Spanning Tree methods in an optimal control setting. Our cost function weights the force inputs to drive the robot and the currently uncovered region. We derive an optimal traversal of the path in a point-to-point manner. In particular, we introduce a meas function that represents the percentage of the area that is still to be visited. The effect of meas on the optimal traversal is derived. Trade-offs between area covered versus the time and energy required are presented. A simple trajectory modification allows the vehicle to continue moving through a turn to reduce energy consumption.

Current consumption of cloud computing has attracted more and more attention of scholars. The research on Hadoop as a cloud platform and its energy consumption has also received considerable attention from scholars. This paper presents a method to measure the energy consumption of jobs that run on Hadoop, and this method is used to measure the effectiveness of the implementation of periodic tasks on the platform of Hadoop. Combining with the current mainstream of energy estimate formula to conduct further analysis, this paper has reached a conclusion as how to reduce energy consumption of Hadoop by adjusting the split size or using appropriate size of workers (servers). Finally, experiments show the effectiveness of these methods as being energy-saving strategies and verify the feasibility of the methods for the measurement of periodic tasks at the same time.

<p class="Abstract">In Wireless Sensor Networks, no physical backbone infrastructure used while all sensor nodes are energy constrained and impractical to recharge. The behavior of networks becomes unstable once the first node dies. The key challenge in such networks is how to reduce energy consumption to increase the network lifetime, especially with the different amount of energy in heterogeneity environments.</p><p class="Abstract">In this paper, the virtual backbone routing solution is suggested to reduce energy consumption in a wireless sensor network. An integrated approach combines both advantages of hierarchical cluster-based architecture and shortest spanning tree topology for constructing a virtual backbone with a mobile sink. The clustering solution is used to divide the network into clusters and reduces the number of nodes included in the communication. On the other hand, the shortest spanning tree technique is used to construct a backbone among all cluster heads and mobile sink every time the sink traverses to a new location. The proposed approach aims to construct an efficient data aggregation spanning tree used to send or receive data between the mobile sink and elected cluster heads in wireless sensor networks. It constructs an efficient virtual backbone to decrease the energy consumption and prolong the lifetime of the network.</p>Performance evaluation results demonstrate how the proposed approach prolongs the lifetime of wireless sensor networks compared to some conventional clustering protocols.

Vapor compression chiller, the largest proportion of building energy consumption as the design and running characteristics, work at part load for most of the time. To improve the energy efficiency at part load, this thesis details some efforts to develop a dynamic model of a vapor compressor system suitable for optimal control design purpose. It present the model of high pressure liquid receiver which is important for the mass balance of the whole system and make sure it operated in a set-point designed. Additional experiments were also performed to verify the precision of the model.

Abstract Energy is a globally important factor of production - the growth of population and income increase energy consumption, so there is an urge to decrease it. However, there are different ways to reduce energy consumption, and one of them is energy efficiency. The aim of the paper is to give a theoretical review of energy efficiency and its benefits. The purpose of the paper is the analysis of economic and environmental indicators and energy efficiency in EU27 (after 2020) and Serbia. The trends of energy efficiency, GDP per capita and GHG emission are shown for the observed countries. The European and Serbian policies and targets for energy efficiency are presented and also the level these countries have reached the set targets. In order to see the relationship between energy efficiency, GDP per capita and GHG emission, the correlation among all variables is applied. The results show that energy efficiency is higher in EU27 than in Serbia. Even though Serbia had energy efficiency increase during the observed period (1995-2018), it lags behind the EU27. However, there is a positive correlation between energy efficiency and GDP and GHG emission in both EU27 and Serbia.

The residential sector in Libya has grown over the past decade in the construction of residential buildings due to the increase in the population. Moreover, the increase in the level of income has contributed to the increase in the purchase of household appliances, which leads to increased demand for energy. Energy consumption in the household sector accounted for 31% of total energy consumption during 2010, and the share of air conditioners in this sector consumed 18.35%. To reduce energy consumption and improve energy efficiency in this sector, policies should be considered to apply energy efficiency standards and markers to household electrical appliances, as they are considered one of the most successful programs used in the world. Countries are implementing such programs to reduce energy consumption in the domestic sector. This paper presents the possibility of implementing such programs to introduce the importance of energy efficiency standards and labeling programs for home appliances in Libya. The calculations required to design such programs show the energy savings that can be achieved during cooling loads in the summer period of 4 months July, August, September). A strategic plan has been developed during 10-year (2020-2030) to estimate the expected savings of energy consumed and to identify possible obstacles and difficulties by gradually increasing the energy efficiency ratio for comestic air conditioners in two stages, from EER10 to EER11 in the first stage is then raised to EER12 as the second stage.

In geographical areas with cold climates, large, massively constructed industrial and warehouse buildings and logistics complexes are large consumers of energy resources. The great height and large contained volumes of the premises, the presence of a significant number of doors, and building configurations that include many transport corridors all require the use of air-thermal curtains to increase the energy efficiency of the buildings’ heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems, which commonly produce several thousand kilowatts of thermal power. Optimization of air curtains can improve the microclimates of the premises, achieve savings in the initial construction costs, and also reduce energy consumption during operation by 10–20%.

The evolution of the technology 5G has influenced the Internet of the Things (IoT) according to the wireless communications of minor latency, and major speed compared to the existing technologies. Consequently, from the 21st century, 5G will act as the spinal column of the IoT and will level the way for the design and deployment of a Smart City, nevertheless, this progress has a negative point which is demonstrated in the energy consumption. The target of this investigation is to announce methods to reduce the consumption of energy in one Smart City based on the IoT and the technology 5G. The results obtained in this investigation allow determining that 5G and the IoT will have a major energy consumption with about 80 % of the entire potency, due to the transmission and reception of a big quantity of information in a Smart City. Likewise, this research, contributes to the knowledge, presenting a review of methods that allow minimizing energy consumption and projects that improve energy efficiency.

Energy efficiency is a pressing concern in IT systems, ranging from mobile devices to large servers in data centers, in order to be more environmentally responsible. In order to meet the growing demands in the awareness of excessive energy consumption, many initiatives have been launched on energy efficiency for big data processing covering electronic components, software and applications. Query optimizers are one of the most power consuming components of a DBMS. They can be modified to take into account the energetical cost of query plans by using energy-based cost models with the aim of reducing the power consumption of computer systems. In this paper, we study, describe and evaluate the design of three energy cost models whose values of energy sensitive parameters are determined using the Nonlinear Regression and the Random Forests techniques. To this end, we study in depth the operating principle of the selected DBMS and present an analysis comparing the performance time and energy consumption of typical queries in the TPC benchmark. We perform extensive experiments on a physical testbed based on PostreSQL, MontetDB and Hyrise systems using workloads generatedusing our chosen benchmark to validate our proposal. Les ordinateurs et les machines électroniques des entreprises consomment une quantité importante d’électricité, libérant ainsi du dioxyde de carbone (CO2), qui contribue aux émissions de gaz à effet de serre. L’efficacité énergétique est une préoccupation urgente dans les systèmesinformatiques, partant des équipements mobiles aux grands serveurs dans les centres de données, afin d’être plus respectueux envers l’environnement. Afin de répondre aux exigences croissantes en matière de sensibilisation à l’utilisation excessive de l’énergie, de nombreuses initiatives ont été lancées sur l’efficacité énergétique pour le traitement des données massives couvrant les composantsélectroniques, les logiciels et les applications. Les optimiseurs de requêtes sont l’un des composants les plus énergivores d’un SGBD. Ils peuvent être modifiés pour prendre en compte le coût énergétique des plans des requêtes à l’aide des modèles de coût énergétiques intégrés dans l’optimiseur dans le but de réduire la consommation électrique des systèmes informatiques. Dans cet article, nousétudions, décrivons et évaluons la conception de trois modèles de coût énergétique dont les valeurs des paramètres sensibles à l’énergie sont définis en utilisant la technique de la Régression non linéaire et la technique des forêts aléatoires. Pour ce fait, nous menons une étude approfondie du principe de fonctionnement des SGBD choisis et présentons une analyse des performances en termes de temps et énergie sur des requêtes typiques du benchmarks TPC-H. Nous effectuons des expériences approfondies basées sur les systèmes PostgreSQL, MonetDB et Hyrise en utilisant un jeu de données généré à partir du benchmarks TPC-H afin de valider nos propositions.
