Composite materials can offer wide range of thermo-mechanical properties when designing load bearing components using them. The wide range of properties can be obtained by varying fiber-matrix volumetric ratio. Another advantage of using composite materials in design is that the directional properties of laminated composite materials can be easily manipulated by varying the angle of orientation with respect to the direction of the load. Theoretically it is possible to design composite laminates with any fiber-matrix ratio, and in any orientation. But in practice, only a selective number of laminates with given fiber volume fraction are produced and sold by the companies depending on their market demands. So, it is necessary for a designer to perform the selection of laminates from a list of available composite laminates to make it commercially viable. The manual selection process of composite laminates can be very cumbersome for the designers when multiple design goals need to be satisfied in the load bearing component that is being designed. This paper presents a new customization approach for design of load bearing components where appropriate unidirectional laminated composites can be selected to satisfy multiple property requirements. In this approach, a laminate customization technique is incorporated with a grammatical method that deals with a shape design technique, and loading analysis for the designed shape. A hip-replacement joint is designed using commercially available composite laminates to illustrate the approach.

The wide range of properties covered by the manufacturable fiber-matrix combinations of composite materials, along with their directional property characteristics, provides designers with material selection flexibility during designing composite material products. Meeting multiple property goals, however, complicates the design process as both the composite material selection and the component shape formation become complicated because the loading conditions and matrix calculations are needed to determine theoretical value of composite material properties. This paper presents a grammatical approach to simultaneously consider the shape and selection composite materials for a load-bearing component. Selection of composites involve determining the fiber and matrix, their volume fraction, and number of layers in different location of the component. A hip-replacement joint is designed using composite material to illustrate the approach.

In this paper, a kind of composite laminates whose reinforcement is four-layer biaxial weft knitted (FBWK)fabric made of carbon fiber as inserted yarns has been made. The composite laminates have been impregnated with epoxy resin via resin transfer molding (RTM) technique. The samples of the experiments have been made from the composite laminates. The bending properties of the FBWK fabric reinforced composite materials with different fiber volume fraction have been investigated. The results show that the bending strength of this kind of composites increases with the fiber volume fraction increasing. The bending strength of FBWK reinforced composites with fiber volume fraction of 52% can reach 695.86 MPa. And the relationship between bending load and deflection is obviously linear.

ABSTRACTMixture models were studied in an effort to predict the microwave frequency permittivities of unidirectional-fiber-reinforced thermoplastic-matrix composite materials as a function of fiber volume fraction, fiber orientation relative to the electric field, and temperature. The permittivities of the constituent fiber and plastic materials were measured using a resonant cavity perturbation technique at 9.4 GHz and at 2.45 GHz. The permittivities of the composite specimens were measured using a reflection cavity technique at 9.4 GHz and at 2.45 GHz. Simple “rule-of-mixtures” models that use the fiber and plastic permittivities have been found to approximate the complex dielectric properties of the composite for varied fiber volume fractions. The permittivities of oriented composites were modeled using a tensor rotation procedure. Composite permittivities were modeled with temperature up to the glass transition temperature of the thermoplastic matrix.

When stress is high, delaminate damage can be induced by transverse cracks. A complete parabolic shear-lag damage model containing delamination induced by transverse cracks is therefore proposed and applied to predict the stiffness reduction by transverse cracking in cross-ply laminated composite materials. The predictions of the complete parabolic shear-lag analysis model, the incomplete parabolic shear-lag analysis model, and the complete parabolic shear-lag damage model containing delamination proposed in this paper have been compared. Results show that the young’s modulus reduction values obtained by our analysis model are better agreement with the experimental ones than other models.

The main purpose of this research is to select suitable matrices and fillers for the preparation of composites that meet modern requirements to meet the needs of a rapidly growing industry. Studies in various databases have shown that metal-matrix hybrid laminated composite materials, mainly aluminum and magnesium alloy plates, are used as matrix materials, while carbon-based nanomaterials are used as fillers. Keywords: composition, matrix, aluminum, magnesium.
