In this paper, the effective mechanical properties of the 34.6 lattice material are characterized theoretically and experimentally. The characterized properties include the stiffness and the strength of the material. A detailed description of the design procedure of the test specimens is presented. Three quasi-static tests are performed, namely, uniaxial tension, uniaxial compression and pure shear. The comparison of the experimental data to the theoretical results shows that the former are in good agreement with the latter. The maximum error obtained of 13% is acceptable according to the literature on experimental studies of cellular solids.

The article establishes the analytical relationships linking the geometric parameters of the shaping cutters. A mathematical model describing the geometrical errors caused by the discrete process of product profile milling with shaping cutters was developed. It was specified based on the model that the distribution of errors on the surface treated with cylindrical and shaping cutters is significantly different. It is found that the errors due to the kinematics of the cylindrical milling process, are constant at value irrespectively of the considered cross section of the cutting tooth, and the errors after the milling significantly differ in the distance function of considered transverse plane from its geometric center. The maximum error occurs in the local longitudinal planes of the product, the profile of which is located at the maximum distance from the mounting technological base of product's surface. The plane of the product, where the maximum geometrical errors are formed during the profile milling is called limiting surface. The design of technological process is performed in the product profile geometry, formed in this plane. The rule of spacious arrangement location of the limiting surface of the product according to its drawing. Using the limiting surface in the design of the operation of profile milling with shaping cutters significantly reduces the duration of the design procedure and eliminates the cost of production on experimental studies related to ensuring the geometric accuracy of products at the initial stage of their production.

This paper presents an implementation of an iterative method based on the wave's concept, for analysing a ring resonator. This method includes a two-dimensional fourier modal transformation (2D-FMT) in a wave guide environment. The method has the advantage of simplicity in that it does not involve basis functions and inversion of matrices, as used in other calculation methods. Therefore, it is capable of analyzing larger bodies than other classical techniques. An implementation of the iterative calculation is shown for the extraction of S parameters of microwave components. The good agreement between simulation results and experimental published data justifies the design procedure and validates the present analysis approach.

The nonlinear optical properties of pepper oil are studied by diffraction ring patterns and Z-scan techniques with continuous wave beam from solid state laser at 473 nm wavelength. The nonlinear refractive index of the sample is calculated by both techniques. The sample show high nonlinear refractive index. Based on Fresnel-Kirchhoff diffraction integral, the far-field intensity distributions of ring patterns have been calculated. It is found that the experimental results are in good agreement with the theoretical results. Also the optical limiting property of pepper oil is reported. The results obtained in this study prove that the pepper oil has applications in nonlinear optical devices.

The densification of water-saturated firn, which had formed just above the firn-ice transition in the wet-snow zone of temperate glaciers, was investigated by compression tests under pressures ranging from 0.036 to 0.173 MPa, with special reference to the relationship between densification rate, time and pressure. At each test, the logarithm of the densification rate was proportional to the logarithm of the time, and its proportionality constant increased exponentially with increasing pressure. The time necessary for ice formation in the firn aquifer was calculated using the empirical formula obtained from the tests. Consequently, the necessary time decreased exponentially as the pressure increased, which shows that the transformation from firn in ice can be completed within the period when the firn aquifer exists, if the overburden pressure acting on the water-saturated firn is above 0.12–0.14 MPa. This critical value of pressure was in good agreement with the overburden pressure obtained from depth–density curves of temperate glaciers. It was concluded that the depth of firn–ice transition was self-balanced by the overburden pressure to result in the concentration between 20 and 30 m.

A new implementation of a beam-steering transmitarray is proposed based on the tiled array architecture. Each pixel of the transmitarray is manufactured as a standalone unit which can be hard-wired for specific transmission characteristics. A set of complementary units, providing reciprocal phase-shifts, can be assembled in a prescribed spatial phase-modulation pattern to perform beam steering and beam forming in a broad spatial range. A compact circuit model of the tiled unit cell is proposed and characterized with full-wave electromagnetic simulations. Waveguide measurements of a prototype unit cell have been carried out. A design example of a tiled 10 × 10-element 1-bit beam-steering transmitarray is presented and its performance benchmarked against the conventional single-panel, i.e., unibody, counterpart. Prototypes of the tiled and single-panel C-band transmitarrays have been fabricated and tested, demonstrating their close performance, good agreement with simulations and a weak effect of fabrication tolerances. The proposed transmitarray antenna configuration has great potential for fifth-generation (5G) communication systems.

This article presents a very detailed study on the mechanical characterization of a highly nonlinear material, the immature equine zona pellucida (ZP) membrane. The ZP is modeled as a visco-hyperelastic soft matter. The Arruda–Boyce constitutive equation and the two-term Prony series are identified as the most suitable models for describing the hyperelastic and viscous components, respectively, of the ZP’s mechanical response. Material properties are identified via inverse analysis based on nonlinear optimization which fits nanoindentation curves recorded at different rates. The suitability of the proposed approach is fully demonstrated by the very good agreement between AFM data and numerically reconstructed force–indentation curves. A critical comparison of mechanical behavior of two immature ZP membranes (i.e., equine and porcine ZPs) is also carried out considering the information on the structure of these materials available from electron microscopy investigations documented in the literature.

Abstract The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) parameters (g factor g i , and hyperfine structure constants A i , with i = x, y, z) and local structures for Cu2+ centers in M2Zn(SO4)2·6H2O (M = NH4 and Rb) are theoretically investigated using the high order perturbation formulas of these EPR parameters for a 3d 9 ion under orthorhombically elongated octahedra. In the calculations, contribution to these EPR parameters due to the admixture of d-orbitals in the ground state wave function of the Cu2+ ion are taken into account based on the cluster approach, and the required crystal-field parameters are estimated from the superposition model which enables correlation of the crystal-field parameters and hence the studied EPR parameters with the local structures of the Cu2+ centers. Based on the calculations, the Cu–H2O bonds are found to suffer the axial elongation ratio δ of about 3 and 2.9% along the z-axis, meanwhile, the planar bond lengths may experience variation ratio τ (≈3.8 and 1%) along x- and y-axis for Cu2+ center in (NH4)2Zn(SO4)2·6H2O and Rb2Zn(SO4)2·6H2O, respectively. The theoretical results show good agreement with the observed values.

The flow field in an inertial impactor was studied experimentally with a water model by means of a flow visualization technique. The influence of such parameters as Reynolds number and jet-to-plate distance on the flow field was determined. The Navier-Stokes equations describing the laminar flow field in the impactor were solved numerically by means of a finite difference relaxation method. The theoretical results were found to be in good agreement with the empirical observations made with the water model.

This paper treats the motion of a particle on a vibratory feeder whose track has directional characteristic in repulsive motion, for examples, obliquely bristled track, obliquely sliced track and so on. Under some assumptions, the practical equation for predicting the mean conveying velocity is shown and the relations between conveying condition and the mean conveying velocity are clarified theoretically. These relations are shown in various diagrams. Referring these diagrams, the optimum conveying conditions are discussed also. The theoretical results show that the mean conveying velocity is considerably larger than that of the ordinary feeder. The theoretical results are confirmed by experimental studies.
