Mathematical Techniques for the Design of Band Gap Materials

The rigourous study of band gap materials in the last years has given as a result that these systems have interesting properties for technological purposes. However, the use of this materials for specific applications requires new tools and methods that help us to obtain optimized materials and realistic simulations. In this work we present two tools that let us obtain these realistic simulations based on experimental data and to optimize the band gap materials for specific uses. Also we present results for the specific case of Sonic Crystals in the audible frequency range.

Аннотация: О роли разминки перед тренировкой и соревнованиями написано много научных статьей и диссертаций. Ещё больше о значимости физической подготовки спортсменов, в том числе и шахматистов. В то же время авторы считают, что вопросу физической подготовки шахматистов и в частности разминке в научной и научно-методической литературе уделяется недостаточно внимания. В своей статье авторы приводят собственные экспериментальные данные о влиянии физических упражнений (разминки) на умственную работоспособность студентов-шахматистов БГУ и как следствие на спортивные результаты команды. Considered the model of the one-dimensional photonic crystals (1-D PCs) with double defects, the refractive indexes (n2’, n3’ and n2’’, n3’’) of the double defects were 2.0, 4.0 and 4.0, 2.0 respectively. With parameter n2=1.5, n3=2.5, by theoretical calculations with characteristic matrix method, the results shown that for a certain number (14 was taken) of layers of the 1-D PCs, when the double defects abutted, there was a defect band gap in the stop band gap, while when the double defects separated, there occurred two defect band gaps in the stop band gap; besides, with the separation of the two defects, the transmittance of the double defect band gaps decreased gradually. In addition, in this progress, the frequency range of the stop band gap has a little increase from 0.092 to 0.095.

In this work magnetoimpedance (MI) behaviour was studied experimentally for Fe19Ni81(175 nm)/Cu(350 nm)/Fe19Ni81(175 nm) sensitive elements deposited by rf-sputtering. A constant magnetic field was applied in plane of the sandwiches during deposition perpendicular to the Cu-lead in order to induce a magnetic anisotropy. Sandwiches with different width (w) of FeNi parts were obtained. The complex impedance was measured as a function of the external magnetic field for a frequency range of 1 MHz to 700 MHz for MI elements with different geometries. Some of MI experimental data are comparatively analysed with finite elements numerical calculations data. The obtained results can be useful for optimization of the design of miniaturized MI detectors.

We have previously developed a model of the corticogeniculate system to explore cortically induced synchronization of lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) neurons. Our model was based on the experiments of Sillito et al. Recently Brody discovered that the LGN events found by Sillito et al. correlate over a much longer period of time than expected from the stimulus-driven responses and proposed a cortically induced slow covariation in LGN cell membrane potentials to account for this phenomenon. We have examined the data from our model, and we found, to our surprise, that the model shows the same long-term correlation. The model's behavior was the result of a previously unsuspected oscillatory effect, not a slow covariation. The oscillations were in the same frequency range as the well-known spindle oscillations of the thalamocortical system. In the model, the strength of feedback inhibition from the cortex and the presence of low-threshold calcium channels in LGN cells were important. We also found that by making the oscillations more pronounced, we could get a better fit to the experimental data.

AbstractAtomistic model has been applied to study various cation dopants, namely Cu, Ag, B, Al, Ga and In in ZnGeP2. The pairwise interatomic potential terms representing the interaction of dopants with the host lattice ions are derived using first principle methods. Defect calculations based on Mott-Littleton methodology predict small binding energies for Cu and Ag substituting Zn in the lattice which are in agreement with the available experimental data. The group III dopants (i.e. B, Al, Ga and In) at the Ge site are predicted to have large binding energies for a hole except B which shows a distinct behavior. This may be due to large mismatch in atomic sizes of B and Ge. At the Zn site, the calculated binding energies of the group III dopants place donor levels in the middle of the band gap.

AbstractMnAgIn_7S_12 single crystals 16 mm in diameter and ~40 mm in length are grown by planar crystallization of the melt. It is shown that the material grown crystallizes with the formation of the cubic spinel structure. From the transmittance spectra recorded in the region of fundamental absorption in the temperature range 10–320 K, the band gap E _ g of the single crystals and its temperature dependence are determined. The dependence has a shape typical of most semiconductor materials: as the temperature is lowered, the band gap E _ g increases. A calculation is carried out, and it is shown that the calculated values are in agreement with the experimental data.
