This paper presents a new model of load distribution for involute, internal gear drives, which takes into account the changing rigidity of the pair of teeth along the path of contact. The model has been obtained from the minimum elastic potential criterion, resulting in a non-uniform load distribution along the line of contact (for helical gears), as well as among several pairs in simultaneous contact. A study of the nominal contact stress, including the calculation of the determinant load conditions, is also presented.

Time varying frictional force and torque are one of the main exciting sources of vibration in helical gears. This paper presents an approach to determine the friction force and torque in involute helical gears considering nonuniform load distribution along contact lines. An analytical load distribution model is employed and extended to obtain the load per unit of length along contact lines. Friction force and torque models under nonuniform assumption are derived. Comparisons of the determined friction force and torque with the results from uniform assumption are made. In addition, the differences between constant friction coefficient and varying coefficient are revealed. Moreover, two typical design cases of helical gears are studied. Results show that the fluctuations of friction force and torque under uniform assumption are more significant than those under nonuniform assumption in sample I for a single tooth, but less significant for the sum of those of the three teeth, while in sample II, the fluctuations under uniform assumption are less significant than those under nonuniform assumption. The friction coefficient induced difference is negligible compared with the difference induced by load distribution assumptions.

A model of load distribution over threads of planetary roller screw mechanism (PRSM) is developed according to the relationships of deformation compatibility and force equilibrium. In order to make the applied load of PRSM uniformly distributed over threads, an improvement approach is proposed, in which the parameters of thread form of roller and nut are redesigned, and the contact conditions of roller with screw and nut are changed to compensate the axial accumulative deformation of shaft sections of screw and nut. A typical planetary roller screw mechanism is taken as example to analyze the load distribution, and the effects of installation configurations, load conditions and thread form parameters on load distribution are studied. Furthermore, the improvement approach is applied to the PRSM, and it is proved to be beneficial to reach uniform load distribution over threads.

The relative strain effects of 15 different load configurations were studied. Using the linear tracking device (LINTRACK) accelerated loading facility, two 5-year-old pavements of 0.15-m asphalt on sand (one virgin and one loaded with 4 million 75-kN wheel loads) were tested. All measured strains were converted to strain factors relative to a standard load (super-single tire, 50 kN, 0.70 MPa). The results were compared with earlier measurements and BISAR-calculated factors. The results on the loaded pavement showed markedly more variation than those on the unloaded pavement. Generally, the BISAR-calculated relative strain factors matched the measured values well for the super-single tire. Considerable difference occurred only in the most extreme load conditions. Nonuniform contact stress distribution can be the cause for this. The calculated relative strain factors for the dual tire configurations underestimated the measured values.

Abstract Aiming at the problem of load distribution during multi-pass cold rolling of nuclear zirconium alloy strip, the load distribution model with good shape is established by the self-adaptive particle swarm optimization algorithm (SAPSO), considering the main constraint conditions including rolling force, reduction and torque in cold rolling process. Based on the penalty function method transforming the constraint problem into the unconstrained problem, the particle swarm optimization algorithm with adaptive inertia weight factor optimized the load distribution model is developed to improve the local search ability of the particle swarm optimization algorithm. Compared with the existing nuclear zirconium alloy industrial schedule, the simulation results of load distribution based on the SAPSO can keep good shape in multi-pass cold rolling process with the high prediction accuracy. The industrial experiments demonstrate that the proportional crown difference value is consistent, the plate shape flatness is good.

This paper presents a novel method for the analysis of solid surfaces in contact with a conformable component. These applications are common in many engine and hydraulic applications, wherein conformable seals, gaskets, bushings, etc. are employed to prevent unwanted flow across an interface or provide a uniform load distribution. The proposed analysis method employs a combination of meanline (m-system) filtering and envelope (e-system) or morphological filtering. Through this analysis, a simulation of contact area and the associated voids or gaps can be assessed.

AbstractThere are faint contaminants near primary stars in the direct imaging of exoplanets. Our goal is to estimate statistically the ratio of exoplanets in the detected batch of point sources by calculating the fraction of contamination. In this study, we compared the detected number of stars with the number of contaminants predicted by our model. We found that the observed number of faint stars were fewer than the predicted results towards the Pleiades and GOODS-South field when the parameters of the conventional stellar distribution models were employed. We thus estimated new model parameters in correspondence to the results of the observations.

Abstract In this paper, a comprehensive analytical model for the fatigue life prediction of ball bearing in various operating conditions is presented. Not only the internal clearance variations induced by the centrifugal expansion and assembly interference, but also ball inertia forces and ball-raceway separations are fully considered in theoretical modeling to achieve accurate life prediction of ball bearing. The model has been validated by comparison with the static results in previous literature. Based on this, the results of the load distribution and fatigue life versus the internal clearance of ball bearing under various operating conditions are studied. The results show that there is always an optimal clearance to maximize bearing fatigue life for the radial load or the combined load conditions, and the size of the optimal clearance for bearing life is determined by both the load conditions and rotating speeds to ensure the uniformity of the internal load distribution of the ball bearing. Therefore, the above theoretical and conclusions can be used in structural design optimization and assembly parameters selection of ball bearing to maximize the life characteristic.
