Fatigue Failure Mechanism of CVT Rubber Belts

The fatigue failure mechanism was investigated for the rubber CVT (continuously variable transmission) belts. There are three major crack initiation modes in the rubber CVT belts, namely the adhesive rubber crack, the backing rubber crack and the bottomland crack. Especially, the mode of the adhesive rubber crack is important to strengthen the rubber CVT belts, because the crack is the most difficult to find out during the driving. In this study, the failure morphology of the damaged belts was observed using an optical microscope and a X-ray CT scan after some fatigue tests. Moreover, the failure mechanism of the adhesive rubber crack was discussed basing on the FEM and simplified mechanical analyses. The fatigue damage was accumulated along the interface between the cog rubber and the adhesive rubber. The interface was de-bonded by the shearing strain, which was induced by the dishing deformation of the belt within the pulley groove.

This paper presents the results of torsion fatigue of widely used bearing steels (through hardening with bainite, martensite heat treatments, and case hardened). An MTS torsion fatigue test rig (TFTR) was modified with custom mechanical grips and used to evaluate torsional fatigue life and failure mechanism of bearing steel specimen. Tests were conducted on the TFTR to determine the ultimate strength in shear (Sus) and stress cycle (S-N) results. Evaluation of the fatigue specimens in the high cycle regime indicates shear driven crack initiation followed by normal stress driven propagation, resulting in a helical crack pattern. A 3D finite element model was then developed to investigate fatigue damage in torsion specimen and replicate the observed fatigue failure mechanism for crack initiation and propagation. In the numerical model, continuum damage mechanics (CDM) were employed in a randomly generated 3D Voronoi tessellated mesh of the specimen to provide unstructured, nonplanar, interelement, and inter/transgranular paths for fatigue damage accumulation and crack evolution as observed in micrographs of specimen. Additionally, a new damage evolution procedure was implemented to capture the change in fatigue failure mechanism from shear to normal stress assisted crack growth. The progression of fatigue failure and the stress-life results obtained from the fatigue damage model are in good agreement with the experimental results. The fatigue damage model was also used to assess the influence of topological microstructure randomness accompanied by material inhomogeneity and defects on fatigue life dispersion.

Two grades of Steel, with tempered martensitic structure, were used for fatigue tests. From such tests, samples were obtained with significant differences in the probability of fatigue failure. The latter was related to surface/sub-surface misorientation developments and developments in compressive residual stresses. A combination of glancing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXRD) and high resolution cross-sectional EBSD (electron back scattered diffraction) were used. The study brings out a clear correlation between misorientation, residual stress and fatigue life.

In this paper, mechanical properties of the as-received and aluminide layer coated MAR 247 nickel based superalloy were examined through creep and fatigue tests. The aluminide layer of 20 µm was obtained through the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process in the hydrogen protective atmosphere for 8 h at the temperature of 1040 °C and internal pressure of 150 mbar. A microstructure of the layer was characterized using the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS). It was found that aluminide coating improve the high temperature fatigue performance of MAR247 nickel based superalloy at 900 °C significantly. The coated MAR 247 nickel based superalloy was characterized by the stress amplitude response ranging from 350 MPa to 520 MPa, which is twice as large as that for the uncoated alloy.

Abstract Historically, sutras played an important role in spreading Buddhist faith and doctrine, and today these remain important records of Buddhist thought and culture. A Mahamayuri Vidyarajni Sutra with polychrome paintings was found inside the cavity on top of the Nanmen Buddhist pagoda, built in the early Tang dynasty (618–627 CE) and located in Anhui Province, China. Textile was found on the preface which is strongly degraded and fragile. Unfortunately, the whole sutra is under severe degradation and is incomplete. Technical analysis based on scientific methods will benefits the conservation of the sutra. Optical microscopy (OM), micro-Raman spectroscopy combined with optical microscope (Raman), scanning electron microscopy in combination with energy dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM–EDS) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) were used to characterize the pigment and gilded material, as well as the paper fiber and textile. Pigments such as cinnabar, minium, paratacamite, azurite, lead white were found. Gilded material was identified as gold. A five-heddle warp satin, made of silk, was found as the textile on the preface of the sutra. The sutra’s preface and inner pages were made of paper comprised of bamboo and bark. As a magnificent yet recondite treasure of Buddhism, the sutra was analyzed for a better understanding of the material. A conservation project of the sutra will be scheduled accordingly.

The bending fatigue tests of single-wall and double-wall corrugated paperboards were conducted to obtain the εrms– N curves under sinusoidal and random loads in this paper. The εrms– N equation of corrugated paperboard can be described by modified Coffin–Manson model considering the effect of mean stress. Four independent fatigue parameters are obtained for single-wall and double-wall corrugated paperboards. The εrms– N curve under random load moves left and rotates clockwise compared with that under sinusoidal load. The fatigue life under random load is much less than that under sinusoidal load, and the fatigue design of corrugated box should be based on the fatigue result under random load. The stiffness degradation and energy dissipation of double-wall corrugated paperboard before approaching fatigue failure are very different from that of single-wall one. For double-wall corrugated paperboard, two turning points occur in the stiffness degradation, and fluctuation occurs in the energy dissipation. Different from metal materials, the bending fatigue failure of corrugated paperboard is a process of wrinkle forming, spreading, and folding. The results obtained have practical values for the design of vibration fatigue of corrugated box.

We report on the die bonding processes and how the surface roughness and metallization schemes affect the processes of die bonding in 4H-SiC device fabrication using a soldering test and die shear test (DST) with differently prepared 4H-SiC samples. The first set of samples (FZ#1 and FZ#2) was capped with sequentially evaporated Ti and Au on an annealed Ni layer. The second set of samples (FZ#3 and FZ#4) and the third set of samples (FZ#5 and FZ#6) were prepared by 4μm-thick Au electroplating on an annealed Ni layer and an un-annealed Ni layer, respectively. The quality of the soldering, such as the solder coverage, void, and adhesion, was characterized by optical microscope, X-ray microprobe, and DST. We found that the samples (FZ#4 and FZ#6) deposited by Au electroplating on C-face (bottom-side) 4H-SiC provided a satisfactory result for the tests of solder coverage, void, and DST and also realized the cleaning process prior to the electroplating and soldering was the most crucial in the die packaging processes of vertical structure devices. The void fraction measured by X-ray microprobe for the samples, FZ#4 and FZ#6 was 2.2% (average for 5 samples) and 0.8% (average for 3 samples), respectively.

Premature fracture of an axle under torsional load occurred after a tracked military tank had experienced field testing for only 80 kilometers. Visual metallographic examinations were performed with optical microscope (OM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The investigation demonstrates that the premature fracture is caused by metallurgical problems inside the axle where the primary and secondary cracks originate, propagate, and eventually result in final catastrophic rupture through torsional fatigue. The failure mechanism is summarized and improvement of the fatigue lifetime for the axle is recommended.
