Crack Position and Depth Identification in Rotating Shafts: Part 2 — Experimental Results

This paper presents the experimental validation of a model based transverse crack identification method suitable for industrial machines, described in part 1. The method is validated by experimental results obtained on two test rigs, which were expressly designed for investigating the dynamical behavior of cracked horizontal rotors. On the first test rig, only one crack type is considered, while on the second one three different types of crack have been analyzed: the first is a slot, therefore not actually a crack since it has not the typical breathing behavior, the second a small crack (14% of the diameter) and the third a deep crack (47% of the diameter). The excellent accuracy obtained in identifying position and depth of different cracks proves the effectiveness and reliability of the proposed method. Moreover, the implementation of identification method operates on a PC and takes short time to run, therefore is suitable for industrial applications.

This paper presents a model based transverse crack identification method in rotating shafts suitable for industrial machines. The identification method and the relative theory is fully discussed, by presenting the breathing mechanism of the crack, the equivalent system of forces, which excites the vibrations of rotating shafts, the way to localize the crack position along the shaft and finally to identify the depth of the crack. This is obtained by using standard finite element models of the machine and the vibration measured in the bearings only, as usual in industrial machines. The proposed method will be validated by means of experimental results which are described in detail in the second part of the paper.

Many researchers have suggested improving the retention of a user in the digital platform using a recommender system. Recent studies show that there are many potential ways to assist users to find interesting items, other than high-precision rating predictions. In this paper, we study how the diverse types of information suggested to a user can influence their behavior. The types have been divided into visual information, evaluative information, categorial information, and narrational information. Based on our experimental results, we analyze how different types of supplementary information affect the performance of a recommender in terms of encouraging users to click more items or spend more time in the digital platform.

AbstractLaser surface hardening is rapidly growing in industrial applications due to its high flexibility, accuracy, cleanness and energy efficiency. However, the experimental process optimization can be a tricky task due to the number of involved parameters, thus suggesting for alternative approaches such as reliable numerical simulations. Conventional laser hardening models compute the achieved hardness on the basis of microstructure predictions due to carbon diffusion during the process heat thermal cycle. Nevertheless, this approach is very time consuming and not allows to simulate real complex products during laser treatments. To overcome this limitation, a novel simplified approach for laser surface hardening modelling is presented and discussed. The basic assumption consists in neglecting the austenite homogenization due to the short time and the insufficient carbon diffusion during the heating phase of the process. In the present work, this assumption is experimentally verified through nano-hardness measurements on C45 carbon steel samples both laser and oven treated by means of atomic force microscopy (AFM) technique.

The study of interactions between polyelectrolytes (PE) and surfactants is of great interest for both fundamental and applied research. These mixtures can represent, for example, models of self-assembly and molecular organization in biological systems, but they are also relevant in industrial applications. Amphiphilic block polyelectrolytes represent an interesting class of PE, but their interactions with surfactants have not been extensively explored so far, most studies being restricted to non-associating PE. In this work, interactions between an anionic amphiphilic triblock polyelectrolyte and different types of surfactants bearing respectively negative, positive and no charge, are investigated via surface tension and solution rheology measurements for the first time. It is evidenced that the surfactants have different effects on viscosity and surface tension, depending on their charge type. Micellization of the surfactant is affected by the presence of the polymer in all cases; shear viscosity of polymer solutions decreases in presence of the same charge or nonionic surfactants, while the opposite charge surfactant causes precipitation. This study highlights the importance of the charge type, and the role of the associating hydrophobic block in the PE structure, on the solution behavior of the mixtures. Moreover, a possible interaction model is proposed, based on the obtained data.

The use of unmanned aerial robots has increased exponentially in recent years, and the relevance of industrial applications in environments with degraded satellite signals is rising. This article presents a solution for the 3D localization of aerial robots in such environments. In order to truly use these versatile platforms for added-value cases in these scenarios, a high level of reliability is required. Hence, the proposed solution is based on a probabilistic approach that makes use of a 3D laser scanner, radio sensors, a previously built map of the environment and input odometry, to obtain pose estimations that are computed onboard the aerial platform. Experimental results show the feasibility of the approach in terms of accuracy, robustness and computational efficiency.

The accuracy of stiffness and damping coefficients of bearings is critical for the rotordynamic analysis of rotating machinery. However, the influence of bearings depends on the design, manufacturing, assembly, and operating conditions of the bearings. Uncertainties occur quite often in manufacturing and assembly, which causes the inaccuracy of bearing predictions. An accurate and reliable in-situ identification method for the bearing coefficients is valuable to both analyses and industrial applications. The identification method developed in this research used the receptance matrices of flexible shafts from FEM modeling and the unbalance forces of trial masses to derive the displacements and reaction forces at bearing locations. Eight bearing coefficients are identified through a Total Least Square (TLS) procedure, which can handle noise effectively. A special feature of this method is that it can identify bearing coefficients at a specific operating speed, which make it suitable for the measurement of speed-dependent bearings, like hydrodynamic bearings. Numerical validation of this method is presented. The configurations of unbalance mass arrangements are discussed.

Cylindrical shells under axial compression are susceptible to buckling and hence require the development of enhanced underlying mathematical models in order to accurately predict the buckling load. Imperfections of the geometry of the cylinders may cause a drastic decrease of the buckling load and give rise to the need of advanced techniques in order to consider these imperfections in a buckling analysis. A deterministic buckling analysis is based on the use of the so-called knockdown factors, which specifies the reduction of the buckling load of the perfect shell in order to account for the inherent uncertainties in the geometry. In this paper, it is shown that these knockdown factors are overly conservative and that the fields of probability and statistics provide a mathematical vehicle for realistically modeling the imperfections. Furthermore, the influence of different types of imperfection on the buckling load are examined and validated with experimental results.

The propagation of scattering Lamb wave in plate was simulated using transient dynamic analysis in ANSYS. In order to extract the characteristic information of received signal for damage identification, the short time Fourier transform based on time-frequency analysis was utilized, and then the energy distribution and envelop of received signal were obtained. Based on the displacement contour of simulation and energy distribution, the propagation of scattering wave in plate with a through hole was examined. Also, a mathematic relationship between damage location and scattering signal was developed, with the help of wave propagation path through actuator, damage and sensor. A nonlinear optimization method was applied on the mathematic relationship to obtain the damage location. The damage identification method using scattering Lamb wave was therefore established.

Automatic equipmenttransportation in the wild complex terrain circumstances is very important in rescue or military. In this paper, an accompanying system based on the identification and tracking of infrared LEDmarkers is proposed. This system avoidsthe defect that visible-light identification method has. In addition, this paper presents a Kalman filter to predict where infraredmarkers may appear in the nextframe imageto reduce the searchingarea of infrared markers, which remarkablyimproves the identificationspeed of infrared markers. The experimental results show that the algorithm proposed in this paper is effective and feasible.
