Abstract This paper reports analysis equations for the computerized third-order analysis of dyads. Such equations are an extension of those reported by C.H. Suh and C.W. Radcliffe. Examples of tracing cubic of stationary curvature and quartic of derivative curvature for multiloop linkages are herein described.

New results from the most recent work within the Norwegian Joint Industry Project (JIP) “Higher Order Wave Load Effects on Large Volume Structures” are presented. A nonslender theoretical model is validated from experiments for two fixed, vertical cylinders with different diameter/peak wavelength ratios. A combination of complete diffraction first-order simulations, sum and difference frequency second-order simulations, and third-order FNV (Faltinsen, Newman, and Vinje, nonlinear long wave model) is implemented in order to develop a simplified and robust ringing load model for a large range of cylinder diameter/peak wavelength ratios. Results from the full diffraction second-order analysis show a significant reduction of second-order loads compared to pure FNV in the wavelength range relevant for ringing loads. The results show improved correspondence with high-frequency experimental loads compared with the unmodified FNV. Results for different cylinder peak wavelength ratios are presented, including validation against experiments. In addition, a few simplified response simulations are carried out demonstrating significant improvements with the modified FNV model.

SummaryFactor analytic studies in Africa are compared with other cross-cultural investigations into the structure of abilities in different ethnic groups. Similarities and differences are noted; and environmental influences on the acquisition of skills are also summarized. A correlational study of wrong answers to a battery of thirty marker tests given to a group of predominantly Mashona students indicates that efficiency skills of numerical facility and memory remain at the first order of factor extraction, reasoning abilities emerge in second-order analysis, while perceptual styles are present in the third-order level. This study is used to hypothesize, in the context of African systems of thought, the existence of a primary thought mode that asserts itself in conditions involving repeated errors.

We extract the strong coupling constant [Formula: see text] from the semileptonic τ-decay width taking into account resummation effects from the running of the strong coupling constant. In the [Formula: see text] scheme. The result reads αs=0.375±0.007 to third-order and αs=0.378±0.007 to fourth-order in the β-function, respectively, where we use the recently computed four-loop coefficient β3. These values for the coupling constant have to be compared with the value αs=0.354±0.005 derived from a third-order analysis of τ-decays. We determine the exact value of the convergence radius of the perturbation series by analyzing the singularity structure of the complex coupling constant plane.

SummaryBirths occurring in winter months, which are high viral infection months, have been repeatedly shown to produce a slight excess of later-diagnosed schizophrenics. As a result, some researchers have speculated on the possible aetiological effect of viral infections on some forms of schizophrenia. The implications of the viral hypothesis were indirectly tested in the context of an ongoing prospective study of Danish children at high-risk (HR) for schizophrenia. A third-order analysis of variance interaction was hypothesized. Genetically vulnerable individuals, born in winter, in an urban environment (which increases the likelihood of the presence and transmission of viruses) would be more likely, as foetuses or neonates, to have suffered some CNS damage due to the infection; thus they would show higher rates of schizophrenia diagnoses. This hypothesis was supported. The rate of schizophrenia in the HR-urban-winter birth condition reached 23.3 per cent, considerably above population base rates (1 per cent) or rates for the HR subjects (8.9 per cent). Alternative explanations for the results were explored.
