The Comparison of the Reliability of Three Psychometric Scales for Measuring Design Quality

Abstract Three scales for subjectively measuring design quality have been developed. Each scale represents a unique strategy for aiding a person in judging the quality of a solution to a design problem. The scales are compared with respect to how reliable these judgements are over time. The experimental results demonstrate that one of the scales is not reliable but that the other two are reliable.

Understanding the customer is a key aspect of developing any e-commerce offering. In doing so, organizations can improve their offerings over time and benchmark against competitors and best practice in any industry. eQual is a method for assessing the quality of Web sites. The eQual instrument has evolved via a process of iterative refinement in different e-commerce domains. Two of the studies conducted have examined online bookshops as a domain for e-commerce quality evaluation, one based on eQual 2.0 and the other on eQual 4.0. In this chapter we aim to examine these studies, and, as a result, to evaluate the use of the instrument and the benchmarking of the bookshops on two separate occasions. Of particular note are whether the findings are consistent across the two studies and the implications of the findings for e-commerce practice. Finally, the paper rounds off with some conclusions and directions for further research.

Eight mandarin cultivars have been analyzed for their content of vitamin C, minerals (Ca, Mg, K, Na, Fe, Cu, Mn, and Zn), CIELab color coordinates (L*, a*, b*, C*, and h ab), total volatile compounds content and sensory aroma intensity of juice. Experimental results proved that no important enough differences were found in the minerals contents to decide which mandarin cultivar was of higher quality. Clemenules provided the darkest juice with the highest vitamin C content and with the most intense mandarin aroma. On the other hand, Nova and Hernandina mandarin could be considered as the worst cultivars for juice production. Finally if Clemenules mandarins were not available for juice processing, Orogrande, Clemenpons, Ellendale, and Marisol could also be good options.

In this context, ethics, managerial ethics, institutionalization of ethics, and importance of ethical principles in enterprises in terms of corporate managerial principles are evaluated in this chapter.

A new metric is presented to automatically establish the stability limit for time domain milling simulation signals. It is based on periodically sampled data. Because stable cuts exhibit forced vibration, the sampled points repeat over time. Periodically sampled points for unstable cuts, on the other hand, do not repeat with each tooth passage. The metric leverages this difference to define a numerical value of nominally zero for a stable cut and a value greater than zero for an unstable cut. The metric is described and is applied to numerical and experimental results.

The effect of the addition of ovine whey powder at 5%, 10%, and 15% on bread quality was studied. Two different types of semolina were used, one being a commercial blend with strong and tenacious gluten (48T) and the other coming from one single cultivar, characterized for having weak and sticky gluten (4T). Two different types of typical Mediterranean bread were produced, pan bread and flat bread, and their quality characteristics were measured, together with their shelf life. The volume of 4T pan bread was improved by the addition of 5% ovine whey powder. In the case of 48T, the volume of bread was negatively affected by the addition of ovine whey powder. Moreover, flat bread made with 4T was more extensible after the addition of ovine whey powder and showed lower starch retrogradation over time than the same type of bread made with 48T. Among the different pan bread types, consumers preferred 4T with 5% of substitution, which also showed an improved cell size distribution in the crumb.

The purpose of this article is to summarize reviews on the quality of clinical trials. Altogether 29 reviews were found. Most clinical trials were judged to be uncontrolled or poorly controlled and/or otherwise poor. To study any change over time, reviews based on reports published 1943—1959, 1960—67, and 1968—77 were considered. The proportion of controlled trials was higher in 1943—59 than in 1968—77. The proportion of trials defined as »good« was lowest in the period 1960—1967. Since the material and definitions varied from one review to the other, the results should be interpreted to reflect the reviewers’ concern about quality rather than the actual quality of the trials themselves. In fact, in most reviews, in which the criteria and material used over time were comparable, the quality of trials had improved. But various factors guarantee that worries about the quality of clinical trials will continue.

Remote interpreting, whereby the interpreter is physically separated from those who need the interpretation, has been investigated in relation to conference and healthcare settings. By contrast, very little is known about remote interpreting in legal proceedings, where this method of interpreting is increasingly used to optimise interpreters’ availability. This paper reports the findings of an experimental study investigating the viability of videoconference-based remote interpreting in legal contexts. The study compared the quality of interpreter performance in traditional and remote interpreting, both using the consecutive mode. Two simulated police interviews of detainees, recreating authentic situations, were interpreted by eight interpreters with accreditation and professional experience in police interpreting. The languages involved were French (in most cases the interpreter’s native language) and English. Each interpreter interpreted one of the interviews in remote interpreting, and the other in a traditional face-to-face setting. Various types of problem in the interpretations were analysed, quantitatively and qualitatively. Among the key findings are a significantly higher number of interpreting problems, and a faster decline of interpreting performance over time, in remote interpreting. The paper gives details of these findings, and discusses the potential legal consequences of the problems identified.

The purpose of this article is to identify what are the human resources processes to be implemented in orthodontic practices to both improve the management of patients, but also the profitability of the structure in terms of both organization and financial. The work on the cohesion of the teams will create a collective commitment which depends on the one hand on the quality of the recruitment of the employees, and then on the motivation levers set up within the teams and maintained over time. In the teams the intergenerational collaboration must be managed and optimized. On the other hand, the orthodontist leader must have a clear strategy and clear objectives to be able to communicate effectively. He must also know the communication tools according to the circumstances to convey the messages he needs.

In recent years, excessive monetization of football and professionalism among the players have been argued to have affected the quality of the match in different ways. On the one hand, playing football has become a high-income profession and the players are highly motivated; on the other hand, stronger teams have higher incomes and therefore afford better players leading to an even stronger appearance in tournaments that can make the game more imbalanced and hence predictable. To quantify and document this observation, in this work, we take a minimalist network science approach to measure the predictability of football over 26 years in major European leagues. We show that over time, the games in major leagues have indeed become more predictable. We provide further support for this observation by showing that inequality between teams has increased and the home-field advantage has been vanishing ubiquitously. We do not include any direct analysis on the effects of monetization on football’s predictability or therefore, lack of excitement; however, we propose several hypotheses which could be tested in future analyses.

Continuous bag-of-words (CB) and skip-gram (SG) models are popular approaches to training word embeddings. Conventionally they are two standing-alone techniques used individually. However, with the same goal of building embeddings by leveraging surrounding words, they are in fact a pair of complementary tasks where the output of one model can be used as input of the other, and vice versa. In this paper, we propose complementary learning of word embeddings based on the CB and SG model. Specifically, one round of learning first integrates the predicted output of a SG model with existing context, then forms an enlarged context as input to the CB model. Final models are obtained through several rounds of parameter updating. Experimental results indicate that our approach can effectively improve the quality of initial embeddings, in terms of intrinsic and extrinsic evaluations.
