Numerical Analysis of Super-Cavitating Flow Around a Two-Dimensional Cavitator Geometry

Mostly for military purposes, which require high speed and low drag, super-cavitating flows around under-water bodies have been an interesting, yet difficult research subject for many years. In the present study, high speed super-cavitating flow around a two-dimensional symmetric wedge-shaped cavitator was studied using an unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations solver based on a cell-centered finite volume method. To verify the computational method, flow over a hemispherical head-form body was simulated and validated against existing experimental data. Through the verification tests, the appropriate selection of domain extents, cell counts, numerical schemes, turbulence models, and cavitation models was studied carefully. A cavitation model based on the two-phase mixture flow modeling was selected with the standard k-epsilon model for turbulence closure. The cavity length, surface pressure distribution, and the flow velocity at the interface were compared with experimental data and analytic solutions. Various computational conditions, such as different wedge angles and caviation numbers, were considered for super-cavitating flow around the wedge-shaped cavitator. Super-cavitation begins to form in the low pressure region and propagates downstream. The computed cavity length and drag on the body were compared with analytic solution and computational results using a potential flow solver. Fairly good agreement was observed in the three-way comparison. The computed velocity on the cavity interface was also predicted quite closely to that derived from the Bernoulli equation. Finally, comparison was made between the computational results and cavitation tunnel test data, along with suggestions for cavitator designs.

The effects of wing–body interaction (WBI) on aerodynamic performance and vortex dynamics have been numerically investigated in the forward flight of cicadas. Flapping wing kinematics was reconstructed based on the output of a high-speed camera system. Following the reconstruction of cicada flight, three models, wing–body (WB), body-only (BD) and wings-only (WN), were then developed and evaluated using an immersed-boundary-method-based incompressible Navier–Stokes equations solver. Results have shown that due to WBIs, the WB model had a 18.7 % increase in total lift production compared with the lift generated in both the BD and WN models, and about 65 % of this enhancement was attributed to the body. This resulted from a dramatic improvement of body lift production from 2 % to 11.6 % of the total lift produced by the wing–body system. Further analysis of the associated near-field and far-field vortex structures has shown that this lift enhancement was attributed to the formation of two distinct vortices shed from the thorax and the posterior of the insect, respectively, and their interactions with the flapping wings. Simulations are also used to examine the new lift enhancement mechanism over a range of minimum wing–body distances, reduced frequencies and body inclination angles. This work provides a new physical insight into the understanding of the body-involved lift-enhancement mechanism in insect forward flight.

A procedure suitable for use on high‐speed digital computers is presented for interpreting two‐dimensional gravity anomalies. In order to determine the shape of a disturbing mass with known density contrast, an initial model is assumed and gravity anomalies are calculated and compared with observed values at n points, where n is greater than the number of unknown variables (e.g. depths) of the model. Adjustments are then made to the model by a least‐squares approximation which uses the partial derivatives of the anomalies so that the residuals are reduced to a minimum. In comparison with other iterative techniques, convergence is very rapid. A convenient method to use for both the calculation of the anomalies and the adjustments is the two‐dimensional method of Talwani, Worzel, and Landisman, (1959) in which the outline of the body is polygonized and the anomalies and the partial derivatives of the anomaly with respect to the depth of a vertex on the body can be expressed as functions of the coordinates of the vertex. Not only depths but under certain circumstances regional gravity values may be evaluated; however, the relationship of the disturbing body to the gravity information may impose certain limitations on the application of the procedure.

We consider the situation of a heavier fluid placed above a lighter one in a vertically arranged Hele-Shaw cell. The two fluids are miscible in all proportions. For this configuration, experiments and nonlinear simulations recently reported by Fernandez et al. (2002) indicate the existence of a low-Rayleigh-number (Ra) ‘Hele-Shaw’ instability mode, along with a high-Ra ‘gap’ mode whose dominant wavelength is on the order of five times the gap width. These findings are in disagreement with linear stability results based on the gap-averaged Hele-Shaw approach, which predict much smaller wavelengths. Similar observations have been made for immiscible flows as well (Maxworthy 1989).In order to resolve the above discrepancy, we perform a linear stability analysis based on the full three-dimensional Stokes equations. A generalized eigenvalue problem is formulated, whose numerical solution yields both the growth rate and the two-dimensional eigenfunctions in the cross-gap plane as functions of the spanwise wavenumber, an ‘interface’ thickness parameter, and Ra. For large Ra, the dispersion relations confirm that the optimally amplified wavelength is about five times the gap width, with the exact value depending on the interface thickness. The corresponding growth rate is in very good agreement with the experimental data as well. The eigenfunctions indicate that the predominant fluid motion occurs within the plane of the Hele-Shaw cell. However, for large Ra purely two-dimensional modes are also amplified, for which there is no motion in the spanwise direction. Scaling laws are provided for the dependence of the maximum growth rate, the corresponding wavenumber, and the cutoff wavenumber on Ra and the interface thickness. Furthermore, the present results are compared both with experimental data, as well as with linear stability results obtained from the Hele-Shaw equations and a modified Brinkman equation.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate tip-clearance and secondary flows numerically in a transonic compressor rotor. The computational method used is based on the numerical integration of the Favre-Reynolds-averaged three-dimensional compressible Navier–Stokes equations, using the Launder–Sharma near-wall k–ε turbulence closure. In order to describe the flowfield through the tip and its interaction with the main flow accurately, a fine O-grid is used to discretize the tip-clearance gap. A patched O-grid is used to discretize locally the mixing-layer region created between the jetlike flow through the gap and the main flow. An H–O–H grid is used for the computation of the main flow. In order to substantiate the validity of the results, comparisons with experimental measurements are presented for the NASA_37 rotor near peak efficiency using three grids (of 106, 2 X 106, and 3 X 106 points, with 21, 31, and 41 radial stations within the gap, respectively). The Launder–Sharma k–ε model underestimates the hub corner stall present in this configuration. The computational results are then used to analyze the interblade-passage secondary flows, the flow within the tip-clearance gap, and the mixing downstream of the rotor. The computational results indicate the presence of an important leakage-interaction region where the leakage-vortex after crossing the passage shock-wave mixes with the pressure-side secondary flows. A second trailing-edge tip vortex is also clearly visible.

Abstract A computational model of a massless kite that produces power in an airborne wind energy (AWE) system is presented. AWE systems use tethered kites at high altitudes to extract energy from the wind and are being considered as an alternative to wind turbines since the kites can move in high-speed cross-wind motions over large swept areas to increase power production. In our model, the kite completes successive power-retraction cycles where the kite angle of attack is altered as required to vary the resultant aerodynamic forces on the kite. The flow field is found in a two-dimensional domain near the flexible kite by solving the full Navier–Stokes equations using an Eulerian grid together with a Lagrangian representation of the kite. The flow solver is a finite volume projection method using a non-uniform mesh on a staggered grid and corrector–predictor technique to ensure a second-order accuracy in time. The two-dimensional kite shape is modeled as a slightly cambered immersed boundary that moves with the flow. The flexible kite is modeled with a set of linear springs following Hooke’s law. The unstretched length of each elastic tether at a given time step is controlled using periodic triangular wave shapes to achieve the required power-retraction phases. A study was conducted in which the wave shape amplitude, frequency, and phase (between two tethers) were adjusted to achieve a suitably high net power output. The results are in good agreement with predictions for Loyd’s simple kite in two-dimensional motion. Aerodynamic coefficients for the kite, tether tensions, tether reel-out and reel-in speeds, and the vorticity fields in the kite wake are also determined.

The vortex induced vibration (VIV) on a circular cylinder is investigated by the numerical solution of the Reynolds average Navier-Stokes equations. An upwind and Total Variation Diminishing (TVD) conservative scheme is used to solve the governing equations written in curvilinear coordinates and the k–ε turbulence model is used to simulate the turbulent flow in the wake of the body. The cylinder is supported by a spring and a damper and free to vibrate in the transverse and in-line directions. In previous work, numerical results for the amplitude of oscillation, vortex shedding frequency, and phase angle between lift and displacement were compared to experimental data obtained from Khalak and Williamson (1996) to validate the code for VIV simulations in the transverse direction. In the present work, results are obtained for phase angle, amplitude, frequency, and lift coefficient and compared to experimental data from Jauvtis and Williamson (2003) for an elastically mounted rigid cylinder with two degrees of freedom. Differences in the amplitude of oscillation between experimental and numerical data were observed for both direction. It seems that the fluid flow memory effect is an important aspect that should be taken in consideration on numerical simulation to reproduce the experimental results for VIV with 2DOF as pointed out by Moe and Wu [1].

Comparisons are made between a nonlinear method for predicting unsteady sheet cavitation and available experimental data for a pitching foil for the purposes of verifying the calculations and to further analyze the flow. A dynamical approach is employed in which the form of the instantaneous cavity surface is modeled as a semiellipse. The cavity length (major axis), thickness (semiminor axis), and position are determined such that the nonlinear cavity-surface boundary conditions are satisfied approximately. The pressure on the instantaneous cavity surface is prescribed using an unsteady thick-foil potential-flow method based on Green’s second identity. The computational method yields best results in predicting the cavity dynamics, but underpredicts the cavity length. For fixed cavitation number, mean foil angle, and pitch amplitude, the cavity dynamics, such as maximum cavity size and cavity surface behavior, are shown to depend on the ratio of the cavity natural frequency for the foil fixed at the maximum pitch amplitude to the foil reduced frequency. For a certain value of this ratio, the cavitation response is shown to be a minimum. The experimental results confirm the computational trends up to the point that experimental data were obtained.

In the present work, results of practical interest are presented for the power absorbed by the system, phase angle, amplitude, frequency, and lift coefficient. The numerical results indicate that the hysteresis effect is observed only when the frequency of vortex shedding gets closer to the natural frequency of the structure in air.

In the present work, the CFD software FLUENT is used to calculate the ship resistance and simulate the flow field around it. Comparison of the numerical results with experimental data of the ship without interceptor shows basically satisfactory agreement in the case of high-speed. In order to get the right parameters of the interceptor for the ship, some two dimensional calculation is taken to study the influence of interceptor with different size. The simulation of the three dimensional vessel with interceptor is also included, and the effect is discussed.

An investigation in the high-speed water tunnel of the hydsrodynamic characteristics of a family of three-dimensional sharp-edged hydrofoils is described. Four rectangular plan-form, 6-deg wedge profiles with aspect ratios of 4.0, 2.0, 1.0 and 0.5 were tested over a range of cavitation numbers from noncavitating to fully cavitating flow. The effects of aspect ratio on the flow and cavity configurations and on the lift, drag and pitching moment are discussed. Where data were available the results have been compared with the two-dimensional case.
