Two Phase Flow Simulation for Nucleate Boiling Heat Transfer Calculation in Waterjacket of Diesel Engine

Basic understanding of the process of coolant heat transfer inside an engine is an indispensable prerequisite to devise an infallible cooling strategy. Coolant flow and its heat transfer affect the cooling efficiency, thermal load of heated components, and thermal efficiency of a diesel engine. An efficient approach to study cooling system for diesel engine is a 3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) calculation for coolant jacket. Therefore, computer simulation can analyze and consequently optimize cooling system performance, including complex cooling jacket. In this paper a computational model for boiling heat transfer based on two-phase Mixture model flow is established. Furthermore, the phenomenon of nucleate boiling, its mathematical modeling, and its effect on heat transfer is discussed. Besides, the static, total and absolute pressure, velocity and stream lines of the flow field, heat flux, heat transfer coefficient and volume fraction of vapor distribution in the coolant jacket of a four-cylinder diesel engine is computed. Also, comparison between experimental equation (Pflaum/Mollenhauer) and two-phase Mixture model for boiling hat transfer coefficient is done and good agreement is seen. In conclusion, it is observed that at high operating temperatures, nucleate boiling occurs in regions around the exhaust port. Numerical simulation of boiling heat transfer process of cooling water jacket and temperature field in the cylinder head of the diesel engine is compared with the data measured on the engine test bench. The calculated results indicate that this method can reflect the impact of boiling heat transfer on water jacket rather accurate. Therefore, this method is benefit to improve the computational precision in the temperature field computation of a cylinder head.

Abstract The nucleate boiling regime and two-phase flow are greater importance to the safety analysis of nuclear reactors. In this study, the boiling heat transfer in nuclear reactor is numerical investigated. The computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code, ANSYS Fluent 17.2 is used and the boiling model is employed. The numerical predictions obtained are compared with the experimental data reported by A. Hamza et al. [9]. An experimental test rig is designed and constructed to investigate the effect of cooling water chemistry control and the material of heater surface. CFD software, allows the detailed analysis of the two-phase flow and heat transfer. In this paper, we evaluate the accuracy of the boiling model implemented in the ANSYS Fluent code. This model is based on the heat flux partitioning approach and accommodates the heat flux due to single-phase convection, quenching and evaporation. The validation carried out of surfactant fluid/vapor two-phase flow inside the 2-D cylindrical boiling vessel. A heated horizontal pipe with stainless steel, Aluminum, and Zircalloy surface materials are used to numerically predict the field temperature and void fraction. Different surfactant concentrations ranging from 0, (pure water) to 1500 ppm, and heat fluxes ranging from 31 to 110 kW/m2 are used. The results of the predicted model depict that the addition of SDS Surfactant and increasing the heat flux improves the coefficient of boiling heat transfer for a given concentration. Also, it was found that the increasing of the concentration of aqueous surfactant solution increases the pool boiling heat transfer coefficient. The aqueous surfactant solution SDS improved the heat transfer coefficient of Aluminum, Zircalloy and stainless steel surface materials by 135%.138% and 120% respectively. The results of the numerical model are nearly in agreement with that measured in experimental.

An experimental investigation on the characteristics of two-phase boiling heat transfer of NH3, C3H8 and CO2 in horizontal small stainless steel tubes of 1.5 and 3.0 mm inner diameters are presented in this paper. Experimental data were obtained over a heat flux range of 5 to 70 kW/m2, mass flux range of 50 to 600 kg/m2s, saturation temperature range of 0 to 12°C, and quality up to 1.0. The test section was heated uniformly by applying an electric current to the tubes directly. Nucleate boiling heat transfer was the main contribution, particularly at the low quality region. Laminar flow was observed in the small tubes. The heat transfer coefficient of the present working refrigerants was compared with other correlations. A new boiling heat transfer coefficient correlation based on the superposition model for refrigerants in small tubes was developed.

Numerous researches have been developed for pool boiling on microporous coated surface in the past decade. The nucleate boiling heat transfer was found to be increased by up to 4.5 times than that on uncoated surface. Recently, the two-phase micro heat exchangers have been considered for high flux electronic devices cooling. The enhancement techniques for improving the nucleate boiling heat transfer performance in the micro heat exchangers have gotten more importance. Previous studies of microporous coatings, however, have been restricted to boiling in unconfined space. No studies have been made on the feasibility of using microporous coatings for enhancing boiling in confined spaces. This study provides an experimental observation of the vapor generation and leaving processes on microporous coatings surface in a 1-mm confined space. It would be helpful for understanding the mechanism of boiling heat transfer and improving the design of two-phase micro heat exchangers. Aluminum particles of average diameter 20 μm were mixed with a binder and a carrier to develop a 150 μm thickness boiling enhancement paint on a 3.0 cm by 3.0 cm copper heating surface. The heating surface was covered by a thin glass plate with a 1 mm spacer to form a 1 mm vertical narrow space for the test section. The boiling phenomenon was recorded by a high speed camera. In addition to the three boiling regimes observed by Bonjour and Lallemand [1], i.e., isolated deformed bubbles, coalesced bubbles and partial dryout at low, moderate and high heat fluxes respectively in unconfined space, a suction and blowing process was observed at the highest heat flux condition. Owing to the space confinement, liquid was sucked and vapor was expelled periodically during the bubble generation process. This mechanism significantly enhanced the boiling heat transfer performance in confined space.

На основе уравнений теплопереноса в движущейся среде и соотношений теплопередачи в термоэлектрическом охладителе приведен сравнительный анализ методик расчета поля температуры в теплонапряженном элементе. Рассмотрены методики на основе: 1) теплового баланса, 2) среднего коэффициента теплоотдачи, 3) дифференциального коэффициента теплоотдачи, 4) прямого расчета в рамках метода конечных элементов. Установлено, что первые две методики не дают адекватного распределения поля температур, но могут быть полезны для определения принципиальной возможности заданного охлаждения с использованием термоэлектрических элементов. Последние две методики позволяют корректно рассчитать температурное поле, но для использования третьей методики необходим дифференциальный коэффициент теплоотдачи, который может быть найден из расчета по четвертой методике. Сделан вывод о необходимости комбинированного использования методик в общем случае. Методы теплового баланса и среднего коэффициента теплоотдачи позволяют определить принципиальную возможность использования термоэлектрического охлаждения конкретного теплонапряженного элемента (ТЭ). Реальные параметры системы охлаждения должны определяться в рамках комбинации методов дифференциального коэффициента теплоотдачи и конечных элементов (МКЭ). Первый из них позволяет определить теплонапряженные области и рассчитать параметры системы охлаждения, которые обеспечивают тепловую разгрузку этих областей. Второй метод используется для проведения численных экспериментов по определению коэффициента теплоотдачи реальной конструкции The article presents on the basis of the equations of heat transfer in a moving medium and the relations of heat transfer in a thermoelectric cooler, a comparative analysis of methods for calculating the temperature field in a heat-stressed element. We considered methods based on: 1) heat balance, 2) average heat transfer coefficient, 3) differential heat transfer coefficient, 4) direct calculation using the finite element method. We established that the first two methods do not provide an adequate distribution of the temperature field but can be useful for determining the principal possibility of a given cooling using thermoelectric elements. The last two methods allow us to correctly calculate the temperature field; but to use the third method, we need a differential heat transfer coefficient, which can be found from the calculation using the fourth method. We made a conclusion about the need for combined use of methods in a general case. The methods of thermal balance and average heat transfer coefficient allow us to determine the principal possibility of using thermoelectric cooling of a specific heat-stressed element. The actual parameters of the cooling system should be determined using a combination of the differential heat transfer coefficient and the finite element method. The first of them allows us to determine the heat-stressed areas and calculate the parameters of the cooling system that provide thermal discharge of these areas. The second method is used to perform numerical experiments to determine the heat transfer coefficient of a real structure

Heat transfer characteristic of a closed two-phase thermosyphon with enhanced boiling surface is studied and compared with that of a copper mirror surface. Two-phase cooling improves heat transfer coefficient (HTC) a lot compared to single-phase liquid cooling. The evaporator surfaces, coated with a pattern of hydrophobic circle spots (non-electroplating Ni-PTFE, 0.5∼2 mm in diameter and 1.5–3 mm in pitch) on Cu substrates, achieve very high heat transfer coefficient and lower the incipience temperature overshoot using water as the working fluid. Sub-atmospheric boiling on the hydrophobic spot-coated surface shows a much better heat transfer performance. Tests with heat loads (30 W to 260 W) reveals the coated surfaces enhance nucleate boiling performance by increasing the bubbles nucleation sites density. Hydrophobic circle spots coated surface with diameter 1 mm, pitch 1.5 mm achieves the maximal heat transfer enhancement with the minimum boiling thermal resistance as low as 0.03 K/W. The comparison of three evaporator surfaces with same spot parameters but different coating materials is carried out experimentally. Ni-PTFE coated surface with immersion method performs the optimal performance of the thermosyphon.

Experiments of flow boiling heat transfer coefficient of FC-72 were carried out over simulated silicon chip of 10×10×0.5 mm3 for electronic cooling. Four kinds of micro-pin-fins with the dimensions of 30×60, 30×120, 50×60, 50×120 μm2 (thickness, t × height, h) respectively, were fabricated on the chip surfaces by the dry etching technique to enhance boiling heat transfer. A smooth chip was also tested for comparison. The experiments were conducted at three different fluid velocities (0.5, 1 and 2m/s) and three different liquid subcoolings (15, 25 and 35K). All micro-pin-finned surfaces show a considerable heat transfer enhancement compared to the smooth surface. Both the forced convection and nucleate boiling heat transfer contribute to the total heat transfer performance. The contribution of each factor to the total heat transfer has been clearly presented in the flow boiling heat transfer coefficient curves. In a lower heat flux region, the heat transfer coefficient increases greatly with increasing fluid velocity, but increases slightly with increasing heat flux, indicating that the single-phase forced convection dominates the heat transfer process. With further increasing heat flux to the onset of nucleate boiling, the heat transfer coefficient increases remarkably. For a given liquid subcooling, the curves of flow boiling heat transfer coefficient at fluid velocities of 0.5 and 1 m/s almost follow one line for each surface, showing insensitivity of nucleate boiling heat transfer to fluid velocity. However, at the largest fluid velocity of 2 m/s, the slope of the flow boiling heat transfer coefficient curves for micro-pin-finned surfaces becomes smaller, indicating that the forced convection also plays an important role besides the nucleate boiling heat transfer. The curves of the flow boiling heat transfer coefficient can be used to determine the boiling incipience at different fluid velocities, which provides a basis for the suitable fluid velocity selection in designing highly efficient cooling scheme for electronic devices.

In this study, the boiling heat transfer coefficients of carbon dioxide with a PAG-type lubricating oil entrained from 0 to 5 wt% in a horizontally placed smooth tube with an inner diameter of 2 mm were experimentally investigated under the following operating conditions: mass fluxes from 170 to 320 kg/m2s, heat fluxes from 4.5 to 36 kW/m2, and a saturation temperature of 15 °C. The results show that for a low oil concentration of approximately 0.5% to 1%, no further deterioration of the heat transfer coefficient was observed at higher oil concentrations in spite of a significant decrement of the heat transfer coefficient compared to that under an oil-free condition. The heat flux still had a positive influence on the heat transfer coefficient in low quality regions. However, no obvious influence was observed in high quality regions, which implies that nucleate boiling dominates in the low quality region whereas it is suppressed in the high quality regions. Unlike the mass flux under an oil-free condition, mass flux has a significant influence on the heat transfer coefficient, with a maximum increase of 50% in the heat transfer. On the basis of our experimental measurements of the flow boiling heat transfer of carbon dioxide under wide experimental conditions, a flow boiling heat transfer model for horizontal tubes has been proposed for a mixture of CO2 and polyalkylene glycol (PAG oil) in the pre-dryout region, with consideration of the thermodynamic properties of the mixture. The surface tension and viscosity of the mixture were particularly taken into account. New factors were introduced into the correlation to reflect the suppressive effects of the mass flux and the oil on both the nucleate boiling. It is shown that the calculated results can depict the influence of the mass flux and the heat flux on both nucleate boiling and convection boiling.

Flow boiling heat transfer characteristics of CO2 with and without oil were investigated experimentally in horizontal smooth and enhanced tubes with an inner diameter of 11.2 mm. The visualization of flow pattern provides a detailed attributes of the nucleate and the convective boiling heat transfer. In order to investigate the effect of the miscible oil on the heat transfer of CO2, POE (polyolester) RENSIO C85E oil is added to give an oil circulation rate (OCR) between 0.5% and 2%. Results are compared with those of pure CO2. The experimental conditions include evaporation temperatures of −15 °C, mass fluxes from 40 to 200 kg/m2 s, heat fluxes from 0.5 to 10 kW/m2, and vapor qualities from 0.1 to 0.8. Oil generally deteriorates the heat transfer coefficient of pure CO2. The reduction in heat transfer coefficient is most apparent at low vapor qualities, 0.1 to 0.4, and at low mass fluxes, 100 and 200 kg/m2. It is caused by the suppression of nucleate boiling due to increased surface tension. At conditions where the convective boiling contribution is dominant, vapor qualities above 0.5, oil increases heat transfer coefficients. Through visualization, it is shown that the wetted area on the perimeter of inner tube is enhanced due to formation of foaming in the smooth tube. However, such enhancement of heat transfer due to forming is negligible in the enhanced tube, because the enhanced factor due to micro-finned structures is dominant.
