A Numerical Analysis of the Behavior of Liquid Film Between Counter-Rotating Rigid and Deformable Rolls

It is important to accurately predict the behavior of liquid film between the rotating rigid and deformable rolls in the film coating process of steel and paper industry. The behavior of liquid film between rolls with the negative gap due to the press contact is determined by the interaction between solid rolls and liquid passing between rolls. In the present study, the numerical methodology for the prediction of behavior of solid rolls and liquid film was introduced with the CFD and FEM analysis. The shape of a deformable roll rotating in press contact with a rigid roll was obtained numerically from the FEM simulation. Based on the results of deformed roll shape, the CFD simulation on the liquid flow between rolls was performed with an arbitrary gap between rolls in the contact area. By comparing the pressure distribution of liquid passing through the gap with the contact pressure distribution of solid rolls, the liquid film thickness between rolls was obtained in equilibrium with the pressure between the rolls. From the CFD simulation on two phase flow of liquid film around rotating rolls with the thickness and flow rate of liquid film passing through the contact area, the thickness of liquid film bifurcated along rolls were predicted for various rotating speed.

AbstractWe consider the axisymmetric arrangement of an annular liquid film, coating the inner surface of a narrow cylindrical tube, in interaction with an active core fluid. We introduce a low-dimensional model based on the two-phase weighted residual integral boundary layer (WRIBL) formalism (Dietze & Ruyer-Quil, J. Fluid Mech., vol. 722, 2013, pp. 348–393) which is able to capture the long-wave instabilities characterizing such flows. Our model improves upon existing works by fully representing interfacial coupling and accounting for inertia as well as streamwise viscous diffusion in both phases. We apply this model to gravity-free liquid-film/core-fluid arrangements in narrow capillaries with specific attention to the dynamics leading to flooding, i.e. when the liquid film drains into large-amplitude collars that occlude the tube cross-section. We do this against the background of linear stability calculations and nonlinear two-phase direct numerical simulations (DNS). Due to the improvements of our model, we have found a number of novel/salient physical features of these flows. First, we show that it is essential to account for inertia and full interphase coupling to capture the temporal evolution of flooding for fluid combinations that are not dominated by viscosity, e.g. water/air and water/silicone oil. Second, we elucidate a viscous-blocking mechanism which drastically delays flooding in thin films that are too thick to form unduloids. This mechanism involves buckling of the residual film between two liquid collars, generating two very pronounced film troughs where viscous dissipation is drastically increased and growth effectively arrested. Only at very long times does breaking of symmetry in this region (due to small perturbations) initiate a sliding motion of the liquid film similar to observations by Lister et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 552, 2006, pp. 311–343) in thin non-flooding films. This kickstarts the growth of liquid collars anew and ultimately leads to flooding. We show that streamwise viscous diffusion is essential to this mechanism. Low-frequency core-flow oscillations, such as occur in human pulmonary capillaries, are found to set off this sliding-induced flooding mechanism much earlier.

Numerical simulation using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has been carried out to study air and water two-phase flow in a small horizontal pipe of an inner diameter of 8.8mm, in order to investigate unsteady flow pattern transition behaviours and underlying physical mechanisms. The surface liquid film thickness distributions, determined by either wavy or full annular flow regime, are shown in reasonable good agreement with available experimental data. It was demonstrated that CFD simulation was able to predict wavy flow structures accurately using two-phase flow sub-models embedded in ANSYS-Fluent solver of Eulerian–Eulerian framework, together with a user defined function subroutine ANWAVER-UDF. The flow transient behaviours from bubbly to annular flow patterns and the liquid film distributions revealed the presence of gas/liquid interferences between air and water film interface. An increase of upper wall liquid film thickness along the pipe was observed for both wavy annular and full annular scenarios. It was found that the liquid wavy front can be further broken down to form the water moisture with liquid droplets penetrating upwards. There are discrepancies between CFD predictions and experimental data on the liquid film thickness determined at the bottom and the upper wall surfaces, and the obtained modelling information can be used to assist further 3D user defined function subroutine development, especially when CFD simulation becomes much more expense to model full 3D two-phase flow transient performance from a wavy annular to a fully developed annular type.

Abstract The contact conditions of a tire with the road surface have a close relationship to various properties of the tire and are among the most important characteristics in evaluating the performance of the tire. In this research, a new measurement device was developed that allows the contact stress distribution to be quantified and visualized. The measuring principle of this device is that the light absorption at the interface between an optical prism and an evenly ground or worn rubber surface is a function of contact pressure. The light absorption can be measured at a number of points on the surface to obtain the pressure distribution. Using this device, the contact pressure distribution of a rubber disk loaded against a plate was measured. It was found that the pressure distribution was not flat but varied greatly depending upon the height and diameter of the rubber disk. The variation can be explained by a “spring” effect, a “liquid” effect, and an “edge” effect of the rubber disk. Next, the measurement and image processing techniques were applied to a loaded tire. A very high definition image was obtained that displayed the true contact area, the shape of the area, and the pressure distribution from which irregular wear was easily detected. Finally, the deformation of the contact area and changes in the pressure distribution in the tread rubber block were measured when a lateral force was applied to the loaded tire.

The present study examines the possibility of using an industrial stirred chemical reactor, originally employed for liquid–liquid mixtures, for operating with two-phase liquid–solid suspensions. It is critical when obtaining a high-quality chemical product that the solid phase remains suspended in the liquid phase long enough that the chemical reaction takes place. The impeller was designed for the preparation of a chemical product with a prescribed composition. The present study aims at finding, using a numerical simulation analysis, if the performance of the original impeller is suitable for obtaining a new chemical product with a different composition. The Eulerian multiphase model was employed along with the renormalization (RNG) k-ε turbulence model to simulate liquid–solid flow with a free surface in a stirred tank. A sliding-mesh approach was used to model the impeller rotation with the commercial CFD code, FLUENT. The results obtained underline that 25% to 40% of the solid phase is sedimented on the lower part of the reactor, depending on the initial conditions. It results that the impeller does not perform as needed; hence, the suspension time of the solid phase is not long enough for the chemical reaction to be properly completed.

Two-phase CFD simulation of the monodyspersed suspension hydraulic behaviour in the tank apparatus from a circulatory pipe The hydrodynamics in fluidized-bed crystallizers is studied by CFD method. The simulations were performed by a commercial packet of computational fluid dynamics Fluent 6.x. For the one-phase modelling (15), a standard k-ε model was applied. In the case of the two-phase flows the Eulerian multi-phase model with a standard k-ε method, aided by the k-ε dispersed model for viscosity, has been used respectively. The collected data put a new light on the suspension flow behaviour in the annular zone of the fluidised bed crystallizer. From the presented here CFD simulations, it clearly issues that the real hydraulic conditions in the fluidised bed crystallizers are far from the ideal ones.

We consider the motion of a cylinder with the same mass and sizeas a curling rock, but with a very different contact geometry.Whereas the contact area of a curling rock is a thin annulus havinga radius of 6.25 cm and width of about 4 mm, the contact area of the cylinderinvestigated takes the form of several linear segments regularly spacedaround the outer edge of the cylinder, directed radially outward from the center,with length 2 cm and width 4 mm. We consider the motion of this cylinderas it rotates and slides over ice having the nature of the ice surfaceused in the sport of curling. We have previously presented a physicalmodel that accounts for the motion of curling rocks; we extend this modelto explain the motion of the cylinder under investigation. In particular,we focus on slow rotation, i.e., the rotational speed of the contact areasof the cylinder about the center of mass is small compared to thetranslational speed of the center of mass.The principal features of the model are (i) that the kineticfriction induces melting of the ice, with the consequence that thereexists a thin film of liquid water lying between the contact areasof the cylinder and the ice; (ii) that the radial segmentsdrag some of the thin liquid film around the cylinder as it rotates,with the consequence that the relative velocity between the cylinderand the thin liquid film is significantly different than the relativevelocity between the cylinder and the underlying solid ice surface.Since it is the former relative velocity that dictates the nature of themotion of the cylinder, our model predicts, and observations confirm, thatsuch a slowly rotating cylinder stops rotating well before translationalmotion ceases. This is in sharp contrast to the usual case of most slowlyrotating cylinders, where both rotational and translational motion ceaseat the same instant. The wet grip performance of tire is one of the important performances affecting vehicle safety. The steering, acceleration, and braking of the vehicle are directly affected by the grounding characteristics between the radial tire and the ground. In order to study the influence of grounding characteristics of the tire on wet grip performance, ten 205/55R16 tires produced by different manufacturers were selected and tested. The grounding characteristics of the tires were tested using an optical test rig for tire grounding pressure distribution, considering inflation pressure distribution, load and wheel alignment. The tire-road contact area was subdivided into five parts, and 69 parameters were used to describe the grounding characteristics. A software was proposed to process the test results automatically, and 69 grounding characteristic parameters of each tire were obtained. Correlation analysis on tire wet grip performance and grounding characteristics was used for selecting the principal parameters. Finally, eight grounding characteristic parameters related to tire wet grip performance was obtained. Among them are five grounding characteristic parameters (central area rectangle ratio, central area width, internal shoulder length-to-width ratio, external and internal shoulder contact area ratio, external and internal shoulder impression area ratio) which have high correlation to tire wet grip performance, and three grounding characteristic parameters (external shoulder width, external shoulder length-to-width ratio, external and internal shoulder width ratio) which have low correlation to the wet grip performance of the tire. The principal component analysis method was used to analyze the highly correlated grounding characteristic parameters, and the regression equation for evaluating tire wet grip performance was fitted. The comparison of experimental and fitted values show that the errors are within 4%. The result demonstrates that, the method for evaluating wet grip performance of the radial tire through tire-road grounding characteristics was achieved.

Heat transfer in micro scale two-phase flow attracts large attention since it can achieve large heat transfer area per density. At high quality, annular flow becomes one of the major flow regimes in micro two-phase flow. Heat is transferred by evaporation or condensation of the liquid film, which are the dominant mechanisms of micro scale heat transfer. Therefore, liquid film thickness is one of the most important parameters in modeling the phenomena. In macro tubes, large numbers of researches have been conducted to investigate the liquid film thickness. However, in micro tubes, quantitative information for the annular liquid film thickness is still limited. In the present study, annular liquid film thickness is measured using a confocal method, which is used in the previous study [1, 2]. Glass tubes with inner diameters of 0.3, 0.5 and 1.0 mm are used. Degassed water and FC40 are used as working fluids, and the total mass flux is varied from G = 100 to 500 kg/m2s. Liquid film thickness is measured by laser confocal displacement meter (LCDM), and the liquid-gas interface profile is observed by a high-speed camera. Mean liquid film thickness is then plotted against quality for different flow rates and tube diameters. Mean thickness data is compared with the smooth annular film model of Revellin et al. [3]. Annular film model predictions overestimated the experimental values especially at low quality. It is considered that this overestimation is attributed to the disturbances caused by the interface ripples.

Abstract Annular gas-liquid two-phase flows, such as the flows attached to the fuel rods of boiling water reactors (BWR), are a prevalent occurrence in industrial processes. At the gas-liquid interface of such flows, disturbance waves with diverse velocity and amplitude commonly arise. Since the thin liquid film between two successive disturbance waves leads to the dryout on the heating surface and limits the performance of the BWRs, complete knowledge of the disturbance waves is of great importance for the characterized properties of disturbance waves. The properties of disturbance waves have been studied by numerous researchers through extensive experimental and analytical approaches. However, most of the experimental data and analyses available in the literature are limited to the near atmospheric condition. In consideration of the properties of liquids and gases under atmospheric pressure which are distinct from those under BWR operating conditions (7 MPa, 285 °C), we employed the HFC134a gas and liquid ethanol whose properties at relatively low pressure and temperature (0.7 MPa, 40 °C) are similar to those of steam and water under BWR operating conditions as working fluids in a tubular test section having an inside diameter 5.0mm. Meanwhile, the liquid film thickness is measured by conductance probes. In this study, we report the liquid film thickness characteristics in a two-phase HFC134a gas-liquid ethanol flow. A simple model of the height of a disturbance wave was also proposed.
