This paper presents a solution to an inverse problem for the elastohydrodynamic lubrication of one-layered journal bearings. Eccentricity ratio, viscosity of the lubricant at atmospheric pressure, pressure-viscosity coefficient, and bulk modulus of the lubricant are the parameters to be estimated from a given pressure distribution. The Least-squares optimization technique is used to solve the proposed inverse problem. Results are presented only for infinite-width journal bearings. The results showed that the proposed inverse algorithm is efficient and accurate. [S0742-4787(00)00703-7]

In this paper a numerical solution for the elastohydrodynamic lubrication of a finite porous journal bearing is presented. The Brinkman–extended Darcy model was applied within the porous layer to incorporate the viscous shear stresses into the analysis. A simple elastic model is used to describe the elastic deformation of the liner. An inverse model is introduced to estimate the permeability parameter and/or the eccentricity ratio from experimentally obtained pressure data. As experimental measurements were not conducted, these data were simulated numerically. It consists of a direct solution for the pressure, for given parameters (permeability parameter and/or the eccentricity ratio), to which a normally distributed random error is added. The least-squares optimization technique is used to solve the proposed inverse problem. A unique solution was obtained for one-parameter estimation. The two-parameter estimation case, however, leads to multiple solutions lying on a constant load line.

AbstractThe topological sensitivity method is an optimization technique used in different inverse problem solutions. In this work, we adapt this method to the identification of plasma domain in a Tokamak. An asymptotic expansion of a considered shape function is established and used to solve this inverse problem. Finally, a numerical algorithm is developed and tested in different configurations.

Abstract This paper is concerned with an inverse problem of the active control of non-steady dynamic vibration in elastic beams. A simulation technique based on the boundary element method and the extended Kalman filter or a new filter theory is successfully applied to the inverse problem. The Laplace-transform integral equation method is used for the solution of dynamic bending vibration in elastic beams. Through a Taylor series expansion, the linear system of equations is derived for modification of the unknown parameters, and it is solved iteratively so that an appropriate norm is minimized. The usefulness of the proposed method of inverse analysis is demonstrated through numerical computation of a few examples.

The prediction of elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) film thickness requires knowledge of the lubricant properties. Today, in many instances, the properties have been obtained from a measurement of the central film thickness in an optical EHL point contact simulator and the assumption of a classical Newtonian film thickness formula. This technique has the practical advantage of using an effective pressure-viscosity coefficient which compensates for shear-thinning. We have shown by a perturbation analysis and by a full EHL numerical solution that the practice of extrapolating from a laboratory scale measurement of film thickness to the film thickness of an operating contact within a real machine may substantially overestimate the film thickness in the real machine if the machine scale is smaller and the lubricant is shear-thinning in the inlet zone.

A theoretical analysis is presented for the study of pneumatic instability for a rigid rotor supported in externally pressurized porous gas journal bearings. The analysis is based on a first-order perturbation with respect to the amplitude of dynamic displacement of rotor. The variation of threshold mass parameter with feeding parameter is shown. In addition, the effects of supply pressure, eccentricity ratio, L/D ratio, and porosity parameter are investigated and presented in the form of graphs.

The design problem is formulated for multi-recess hydrostatic journal bearings with a design criterion of minimum total power loss. The design is subject to the constraints of constant ratio of the recess area to the total bearing area and maximum load capacity for a given recess geometry. The L/D ratio, eccentricity ratio, ratio of recess area to total bearing area, and shaft rotational speed are considered as parameters. The analysis is based on the bearing model of Raimondi and Boyd [1]. This model is generally valid for low-to-moderate speeds and a ratio of recess area-to-total bearing area of approximately 0.5 or greater. Design charts are presented for bearings having a ratio of recess area-to-total bearing area of 0.6 and employing capillary and orifice restrictors, these being the most common types of compensating elements. A design example is given to illustrate the use of the design charts.

Abstract In the classical approach to elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) a single parameter, the pressure-viscosity coefficient, quantifies the isothermal pressure dependence of the viscosity for use in prediction of film thickness. Many definitions are in current use. Progress toward a successful definition of this property has been hampered by the refusal of those working in classical EHL to acknowledge the existence of accurate measurements of the piezoviscous effect that have existed for nearly a century. The Hamrock and Dowson pressure-viscosity coefficient at high temperature requires knowledge of the piezoviscous response at pressures which exceed the inlet pressure and may exceed the Hertz pressure. The definition of pressure-viscosity coefficient and the assumed equation of state must limit the use of the classical formulas, including Hamrock and Dowson, to liquids with high Newtonian limit and to low temperature. Given that this problem has existed for at least fifty years without resolution, it is reasonable to conclude that there is no definition of pressure-viscosity coefficient that will quantify the piezoviscous response for an analytical calculation of EHL film thickness at temperatures above ambient.

In aerodynamic bearings, since the supporting air film is generated by rotor motion, there is no support at the start of motion. As in all such bearings, there is dry rubbing until the rotor achieves sufficient speed to lift-off. Thus, the lower the lift-off speed, the less will be the rubbing and so the greater will be the life of the bearing. This paper focuses on the theoretical prediction of lift-off speed in aerodynamic compliant foil journal bearings based on a generalized solution of elasto-aerodynamically coupled lubrication for compliant foil bearings. A computational method is presented which is used to predict the lift-off speed in aerodynamic foil journal bearings with eccentricity ratio greater than or equal to 1.0. Special emphasis is placed on investigating the effects of the load imposed on the bearing, the nominal radial clearance and the bearing radius on the lift-off speed. The numerical results obtained indicate that lift-off speed decreases with the decrease of load and nominal radial clearance, but with an increase in bearing radius. The eccentricity ratios are all greater than 1.0 at the lift-off speed for the aerodynamic compliant foil journal bearings used in this study.

An analytical solution for the performance characteristics of finite porous journal bearings is obtained. Results are presented which relate the eccentricity ratio and coefficient of friction as functions of load number for design variables of 0.0001, 0.001, 0.01, and 0.1. The load capacity obtained by using the finite bearing theory is compared to the load capacity obtained by using the short-bearing approximation and the infinite-bearing approximation.

This paper aims to improve the tribological performance of journal bearings by optimizing the coverage area of circular microtextures in divergent region of the sleeve. A numerical model is proposed to calculate the friction coefficient and bearing load of textured journal bearings. The surface of the sleeve is divided into rectangular squares. Textures that located at the center of rectangular grids are assumed to be present or absent, marked as 1 and 0, respectively. Afterward, different texture coverage area arrangements are evolved and selected based on the genetic algorithm (GA). The area of semi-elliptical shape is obtained as the novel and preferable textured coverage area design for journal bearings. Influences of width and eccentricity ratio are discussed, which confirm the semimajor and semiminor axes of the semi-elliptical shape of texture coverage area equal to one-third of the circumferential length and half of the width of the journal bearing, respectively.
