Increasing efficiencies of modern aero-engines are accompanied by rising turbine inlet temperatures, pressure levels and rotational speeds. These operating conditions require a detailed knowledge of two-phase flow phenomena in secondary air and lubrication oil systems in order to predict correctly the heat transfer to the oil. It has been found in earlier investigations that especially at high rotational speeds the heat transfer rate within the bearing chambers is significantly increased with negative effects on the heat to oil management. Furthermore, operating conditions are reached where oil coking and oil fires are more likely to occur. Therefore, besides heat sources like bearing friction and churning, the heat transfer along the housing wall has to be considered in order to meet safety and reliability criteria. Based on our recent publications as well as new measurements of local and mean heat transfer coefficients, which were obtained at our test facility for engine relevant operating conditions, an equation for the internal bearing chamber wall heat transfer is proposed. Nusselt numbers are expressed as a function of non-dimensional parameter groups covering influences of chamber geometry, flow rates and shaft speed.

This paper deals with a numerical study aimed at the validation of a computational procedure for the aerothermal characterization of pre-swirl systems employed in axial gas turbines. The numerical campaign focused on an experimental facility which models the flow field inside a direct-flow pre-swirl system. Steady and unsteady simulation techniques were adopted in conjunction with both a standard two-equations RANS/URANS modelling and more advanced approaches such as the Scale-Adaptive-Simulation principle, the SBES and LES. The comparisons between CFD and experiments were done in terms of swirl number development, static and total pressure distributions, receiving holes discharge coefficient and heat transfer on the rotor disc surface. Several operating conditions were accounted for, spanning 0.78·106<Reφ<1.21·106 and 0.123<λt<0.376. Overall the steady-state CFD predictions are in good agreement with the experimental evidences even though it is not able to confidently mimic the experimental swirl and pressure behaviour in some regions. Although the use of unsteady sliding mesh and direct turbulence modelling, would in principle increase the insight in the physical phenomenon, from a design perspective the tradeoff between accuracy and computational costs is not always favourable.

Abstract Augmented backside cooling refers to the enhancement of the backside convection of a combustor liner using extended heat transfer surfaces to fully utilise the cooling air by maximising the heat transfer to pumping ratio characteristic. Although film cooling has and still is widely used in the gas turbine industry, augmented backside cooling has been in development for decades now. The reason for this, is to reduce the amount of air used for liner cooling and to also reduce the emissions caused by using film cooling in the primary zones. In the case of micro gas turbines, emissions are of even greater importance, since the regulations for such engines will most likely become stricter in the following years due to a global effort to reduce emission. Furthermore, the liners investigated in this paper are for a 10 kWe micro turbine, destine for various potential markets, such as combine heat and power for houses, EV hybrids and even small UAVs. The majority of these markets require long service intervals, which in turn requires the combustor liners to be under the least amount of thermal stress possible. The desire to also increase combustor inlet temperatures with the use of recuperated exhaust gases, which in turn increase the overall system efficiency, limits the cooling effectiveness of the inlet air. Due to all these reasons, an advanced form of augmented backside cooling would be of substantial significance in such a system. Currently some very simple designs are used in the form of straight plain fins, transverse strips or other similar geometries, but the creation of high heat transfer efficiency surfaces in such small sizes becomes very difficult with traditional subtractive manufacturing methods. When using additive manufacturing though these types of surfaces are not an issue. This paper covers the comparison of experimental results with conjugate heat transfer CFD models and empirical heat balance models for two different AM liner cooling geometries and an AM blank liner. The two cooling fin geometries include a rotating plain fin and an offset strip fin. The liners were tested in an AM built reverse flow radial swirl stabilised combustion chamber at a variety of operating conditions. During the experiments the surfaces were compared using a thermal camera to record the outer liner temperature which was viewed through a quartz outer casing. The experimental results showed that the cooling surfaces were effective at reducing the liner temperatures with minimal pressure losses for multiple operating points. Those results were then compared against the conjugate heat transfer CFD models and the empirical calculations used to design the surfaces initially. From this comparison, it was noticed both the CFD and empirical calculations under predicted the wall temperatures. This is thought to be due to inaccuracies in the predicted flame temperatures and the assumed emissivity values used to calibrate the thermal imaging camera. Further uncertainties arise from the assumption of a constant air and hot gas temperature and mass flow along the cooling surfaces and the lack of data for the surface roughness of the parts.

A CFD code for the prediction of flow and heat transfer in rotating turbine disc cavities is described and its capabilities demonstrated through comparison with available experimental data. Application of the method to configurations typically found in aeroengine gas turbines is illustrated and discussed. The code employs boundary-fitted coordinates and uses the k-ε turbulence model with alternative near-wall treatments. The wall function approach and a one-equation near-wall model are compared and it is shown that there are particular limitations in the use of wall functions at low rotational Reynolds number. Validation of the code includes comparison with earlier CFD calculations and measurements of heat transfer, disc moment and fluid velocities. It is concluded that, for this application CFD is a valuable design tool capable of predicting the flow at engine operating conditions thereby offering the potential for reduced engine testing through enhanced understanding of the physical processes.

In the present work, we focus on computational investigations of the Reynolds number effect and the wall heat transfer on the performance of axial compressor during its miniaturization. The NASA stage 35 compressor is selected as the configuration in this study and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is used to carry out the miniaturization process and simulations. We perform parameter studies on the effect of Reynolds number and wall thermal conditions. Our results indicate a decrease of efficiency, if the compressor is miniaturized based on its original geometry due to the increase of viscous effects. The increased heat transfer through wall has only a small effect and will actually benefit compressor performance based on our study.

Heat transfer is an important phenomenon that exists in many industrial applications, especially for gas turbines, aeronautical engines. In this work, two different turbulence models ([Formula: see text] and SAS model) are used to investigate the effects of inlet turbulence on wall heat transfer and the characteristics of flow field in a well-known turbine guide vane (LS89). In order to handle the transition, Menter’s [Formula: see text] transition model is used. The simulations show that the inlet turbulence has an apparent effect on the wall heat transfer of the vane. Not only the maximum wall heat transfer coefficient is increased, the distribution of wall heat flux at the suction side is also modified. The isentropic Mach number along the vane surface is insensitive to the variance of inlet turbulence intensity. Besides, a shock appears in the throat and a laminar-to-turbulence transition position moves forward after the main flow turbulence is enhanced. Moreover, the results indicate that SAS model is capable of capturing more flow structures such as reflecting pressure waves and shedding vortexes while the [Formula: see text] model misses them due to the dissipation.
