Isothermal Fatigue Behavior and Damage Modeling of a High Temperature Woven PMC

This study focuses on the fully reversed fatigue behavior exhibited by a carbon fiber/polyimide resin woven laminate at room and elevated temperatures. Nondestructive video edge view microscopy and destructive sectioning techniques were used to study the microscopic damage mechanisms that evolved. The elastic stiffness was monitored and recorded throughout the fatigue life of the coupon. In addition, residual compressive strength tests were conducted on fatigue coupons with various degrees of damage as quantified by stiffness reduction. Experimental results indicated that the monotonic tensile properties were only minimally influenced by temperature, while the monotonic compressive and fully reversed fatigue properties displayed greater reductions due to the elevated temperature. The stiffness degradation, as a function of cycles, consisted of three stages; a short-lived high degradation period, a constant degradation rate segment covering the majority of the life, and a final stage demonstrating an increasing rate of degradation up to failure. Concerning the residual compressive strength tests at room and elevated temperatures, the elevated temperature coupons appeared much more sensitive to damage. At elevated temperatures, coupons experienced a much larger loss in compressive strength when compared to room temperature coupons with equivalent damage. The fatigue damage accumulation law proposed for the model incorporates a scalar representation for damage, but admits a multiaxial, anisotropic evolutionary law. The model predicts the current damage (as quantified by residual stiffness) and remnant life of a composite that has undergone a known load at temperature. The damage/life model is dependent on the applied multiaxial stress state as well as temperature. Comparisons between the model and data showed good predictive capabilities concerning stiffness degradation and cycles to failure. [S0742-4795(00)01001-2]

This paper presents the results of elevated temperatures on the compressive of high fly ash content concrete (HFCC). The specimens were prepared with three different replacements of cement by fly ash 30%, 40% and 50% by mass and the residual compressive strength was tested after exposure to elevated temperature 250, 450, 550 and 650°C and room temperature respectively. The results showed that the compressive strength apparently decreased with the elevated temperature increased. The presence of fly ash was effective for improvement of the relative strength, which was the ratio of residual compressive strength after exposure to elevated temperature and ordinary concrete. The relative compressive strength of fly ash concrete was higher than those of ordinary concrete. Based on the experiments results, the alternating simulation formula to determine the relationship among relative strength, elevated temperature and fly ash replacement is developed by using regression of results, which provides the theoretical basis for the evaluation and repair of HFCC after elevated temperature.

In this study, the effect of waste PET as lightweight aggregate (WPLA) replacement with conventional aggregate on the some physical and mechanical properties and residual compressive strength of concrete was investigated. For this purpose, five different mixtures were prepared (the reference mixture and four WPLA mixtures including 30%, 40%, 50% and 60% waste PET aggregate by volume). The fresh and dry unit weights, compressive strengths, flexural-tensile strengths, water absorption and porosity ratios of the mixtures were measured. In addition the specimens exposed to elevated temperatures at 150, 300 and 450 °C and the residual compressive strengths were measured. Test results indicated that the unit weight, compressive strength and flexural-tensile strength of the specimens decreased as the amount of WPLA increased in concrete. After exposing to elevated temperature, WPLA mixtures retained their structural integrity and compressive strengths at 150 °C and 300 °C. However there was a significant decrease in the residual compressive strength values of WPLA mixtures at 450 °C.

Micro-cracks in the vicinity of paste-aggregate interfaces and in the paste itself can be induced when concrete is exposed to elevated temperatures in the range 100°C-300°C. Although with increase of temperature, the strength of concrete becomes more and more influenced by the growing number of micro-cracks, the compressive strength of concrete at an elevated temperature lower than 300°C is almost the same of concrete at room temperature. Under repeated load, those microcracks caused by temperature would propagate, enlarge and become linked up, as a result, the fatigue behavior of concrete would decrease. In this paper, tests have been carried out to study the fatigue behavior of concrete after exposure to elevated temperatures of up to 300°C. Test results have shown that the reduction of fatigue strength of concrete is remarkable.

AbstractThe stability of compressive residual stresses generated by deep rolling plays a decisive role on the fatigue behavior of specimens and components, respectively. In this regard, deep rolling at elevated temperature has proven to be very effective in stabilizing residual stresses when fatigue analysis is conducted at ambient temperature. However, since residual stresses can be affected not only by plastic deformation but also when thermal energy is provided, it is necessary to analyze the influence of temperature and time on the relaxation behavior of residual stresses at elevated temperature. To evaluate the effect of deep rolling at elevated temperatures on stability limits under thermal as well as combined thermo-mechanical loads, the present work introduces and discusses the results of investigations on the thermal stability of residual stresses in differently deep rolled material conditions of the steel SAE 1045.

A reduced-activation ferritic/martensitic (RAF/M) steel, JLF-1, is considered as one of the candidate structure material of the fusion reactors and supercritical water-cooled reactor (SCWR). Low cycle fatigue properties of JLF-1 steel at elevated temperature are the design base to provide adequate design margin against postulated mechanism that could experience during its design life, such as stress range, plastic deformation, and cyclic softening etc. However, the reduction in design margin is significant when the cyclic softening happens in cyclic deformation at RT, 673K, 873K. Thus, for the application as the structural materials, it is necessary to evaluate low cycle fatigue behavior and cyclic softening of JLF-1 steel at elevated temperature since those properties of material at elevated temperature are the key issue for design.

This research is aimed at investigating the effect of elevated temperature, curing duration and curing methods on the strength recovery of lightweight concrete. Concrete specimens were subjected to elevated temperatures ranging from 300 to 600°C in a controlled heating environment. The specimens were subjected to three types of curing conditions: continuous water curing at 27°C, curing in a relative humidity of 95% at 27°C and curing in water at 60°C for three days and then curing in water at 27°C. The curing duration ranged from 7 to 56 days. The results indicated that the re-curing of concrete for the recovery of compressive strength is most effective in the temperature range from 300 to 500°C. For temperatures outside the range of 300 to 500°C, re-curing was either not effective or had limited application.

The use of polymer matrix composites (PMC) for manufacturing primary load-bearing structural components has significantly increased in many industrial applications. Specifically in the aerospace industry, PMCs are also being considered for elevated temperature applications. Current aerospace-grade composite components subjected to fatigue loading are over-designed due to insufficient understanding of the material failure processes, and due to the lace of available generic fatigue prediction models. A comprehensive literature survey reveals that there are few fatigue studies conducted on woven and braided fabric reinforced PMC materials, and even fewer at elevated temperatures. It is therefore the objective of this study to characterize and subsequently model the elevated temperature fatigue behaviour of a triaxial braided PMC, and to investigate the elevated temperature of fatigue properties of two additional woven PMCs. An extensive experimental program is conducted using a unique test protocol on the braided and woven composites, which consists of static and fatigue testing at various test temperatures. The development of mechanically-induced damage is monitored using a combination of non-destructive techniques which included infrared thermography, fiber optic sensors and edge replication. The observed microscopic damage development is quantified and correlated to the exhibited macroscopic material behaviour at all test temperatures. The fiber-dominated PMC materials considered in this study did not exhibit notable time or temperature-dependent static properties. However, fatigue tests reveal that the local damage development is in fact notably influenced by temperature. The elevated temperature environment increases the toughness of the thermosetting polymers, which results in consistently slower fatigue crack propagation rates for the respective composite materials. This has a direct impact on the stiffness degradation rate and the fatigue lives for the braided and woven composites under investigation. The developed analytical fatigue damage prediction model, which is based on actual observed damage mechanisms, accurately predicted the development of damage and corresponding stiffness degradation for the braided PMC, for all test temperatures. An excellent correlation was found between the experimental the predicted results to within a 2% accuracy. The prediction model adequately captured the local temperature-induced phenomenon exhibited by the braided PMC material. The results presented in this study are novel for a braided composite material subjected to elevated temperature fatigue.
