Thermohydraulic Performance Optimization of Automobile Radiators Using Statistical Approaches

Abstract Automobile radiator which is one of the vital components used for engine cooling in vehicles, is expected to provide higher thermal performance without changing the exterior dimensions of the radiator with the development of engine technology. This situation necessitates changes in both design and operating parameters in the currently used radiator. In the present study, all fundamental parameters affecting the thermal and hydraulic performance of an automobile radiator are evaluated and optimized with statistical methods. Optimization study is carried out using Taguchi and ANOVA methods for two specified objective functions (heat transfer and pressure drop). The order of importance and impact rates for each design and operating parameter, the best and worst working conditions in terms of both target functions are determined. Air velocity, air inlet temperature, coolant inlet temperature and fin pitch are found to be the most effective parameters on the heat transfer with a contribution ratio of 88%. The best and worst working conditions are obtained for the heat transfer and under these working conditions, they are calculated as 43.68 kW and 1.63 kW, respectively. When the system is examined in terms of the pressure drop, the results show that the coolant flow rate and tube height have a great impact with a contribution ratio of 67.04% and 32.06%, respectively. Lastly, the maximum and minimum pressure drop within the studied operating condition range, are determined as 20.68 kPa and 0.12 kPa, respectively.

Accurate measurements of heat transfer and pressure drop play important roles in thermal designs in a variety of pipes and ducts. In this study, the convective heat transfer coefficient was measured with a semi-local surface average based on Newton’s Law of cooling. Flow and heat transfer data for different Reynolds numbers were collected and compared in a duct with smooth walls. Pressure drop was measured with a pressure transducer from OMEGA Engineering Inc. The experimental results were compared with numerical estimations generated in ANSYS Fluent. Fluent contains the broad physical modeling capabilities needed to model heat transfer and pressure drop in the duct. Thermal conduction and convection in the three-dimensional (3D) duct are simulated together. Special cares for selecting the viscosity models and the near-wall treatments are discussed. The goal of the paper is to find appropriate numerical models for simulating heat conduction, heat convection and pressure drop in the duct with different Reynolds numbers. The relationship between the heat transfer coefficient and Reynolds numbers is discussed. Heat flux and inlet temperature measured in the experiment are applied to the boundary conditions. The study provides the unique opportunity to verify the accuracy of numerical models on heat transfer and pressure drop in ANSYS Fluent.

Abstract High performance and economically viable cooling solutions must be developed to reduce weight and volume, allowing for a wide-spread utilization of hybrid electric vehicles. The traditional embedded microchannel cooling heat sinks suffer from high pressure drop due to small channel dimensions and long flow paths in two-dimensional (2D) plane. Utilizing direct “embedded cooling” strategy in combination with top access three-dimensional (3D) manifold strategy reduces the pressure drop by nearly an order of magnitude. In addition, it provides more temperature uniformity across large area chips and it is less prone to flow instability in two-phase boiling heat transfer. This study presents the experimental results for single-phase thermofluidic performance of an embedded silicon microchannel cold plate (CP) bonded to a 3D manifold for heat fluxes up to 300 W/cm2 using single-phase R-245fa. The heat exchanger consists of a 5 × 5 mm2 heated area with 25 parallel 75 × 150 μm2 microchannels, where the fluid is distributed by a 3D-manifold with four microconduits of 700 × 250 μm2. Heat is applied to the silicon heat sink using electrical Joule-heating in a metal serpentine bridge and the heated surface temperature is monitored in real-time by infrared (IR) camera and electrical resistance thermometry. The maximum and average temperatures of the chip, pressure drop, thermal resistance, and average heat transfer coefficient (HTC) are reported for flow rates of 0.1, 0.2. 0.3, and 0.37 L/min and heat fluxes from 25 to 300 W/cm2. The proposed embedded microchannels-3D manifold cooler, or EMMC, device is capable of removing 300 W/cm2 at maximum temperature 80 °C with pressure drop of less than 30 kPa, where the flow rate, inlet temperature, and pressures are 0.37 L/min, 25 °C and 350 kPa, respectively. The experimental uncertainties of the test results are estimated, and the uncertainties are the highest for heat fluxes < 50 W/cm2 due to difficulty in precisely measuring the fluid temperature at the inlet and outlet of the microcooler.

Abstract Gas Turbine blade cooling is an important topic of research, as a high turbine inlet temperature (TIT) essentially means an increase in efficiency of gas turbine cycles. Internal cooling channels in gas turbine blades are key to the cooling and prevention of thermal failure of the material. Serpentine channels are a common feature in internal blade cooling. Optimization methods are often employed in the design of blade internal cooling channels to improve heat-transfer and reduce pressure drop. Topology optimization uses a variable porosity approach to manipulate flow geometries by adding or removing material. Such a method has been employed in the current work to modify the geometric configuration of a serpentine channel to improve total heat transferred and reduce the pressure drop. An in-house OpenFOAM solver has been used to create non-traditional geometries from two generic designs. Geometry-1 is a 2-D serpentine passage with an inlet and 4 bleeding holes as outlets for ejection into the trailing edge. Geometry-2 is a 3-D serpentine passage with an aspect ratio of 3:1 and consists of two 180-degree bends. The inlet velocity for both the geometries was used as 20 m/s. The governing equations employ a “Brinkman porosity parameter” to account for the porous cells in the flow domain. Results have shown a change in shape of the channel walls to enhance heat-transfer in the passage. Additive manufacturing can be employed to make such unconventional shapes.

Abstract This paper presents a comparison of heat transfer and pressure drop during single-phase flows inside diverging, converging, and uniform microgaps using distilled water as the working fluid. The microgaps were created on a plain heated copper surface with a polysulfone cover that was either uniform or tapered with an angle of 3.4°. The average gap height was 400 microns and the length and width dimensions were 10 mm × 10 mm, resulting in an average hydraulic diameter of approximately 800 microns for all configurations. Experiments were conducted at atmospheric pressure and the inlet temperature was set to 30 °C. Heat transfer and pressure drop data were acquired for flow rates varying from 57 to 485 ml/min and the surface temperature was monitored not to exceed 90 °C to avoid bubble nucleation, so the heat flux varied from 35 to 153 W/cm2 depending on the flow rate. The uniform configuration resulted in the lowest pressure drop, and the diverging one showed slightly higher pressure drop values than the converging configuration, possibly because the flow is most constrained at the inlet section, where the fluid is colder and presents higher viscosity. In addition, a minor dependence of pressure drop with heat flux was observed due to temperature dependent properties. The best heat transfer performance was obtained with the converging configuration, which was especially significant at low flow rates. This behavior could be explained by an increase in the heat transfer coefficient due to flow acceleration in converging gaps, which compensates the decrease in temperature difference between the fluid and the surface due to fluid heating along the gap. Overall, the comparison between the three configurations shows that converging microgaps have better performance than uniform or diverging ones for single-phase flows, and such effect is more pronounced at lower flow rates, when the fluid experiences higher temperature changes.

In the present study, the local heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics are investigated experimentally for the flow boiling of refrigerant HFC134a in a multi-port extruded tube of 1.06mm in hydraulic diameter. The test tube is 865mm in total length made of aluminum. The pressure drop is measured at an interval of 191 mm, and the local heat transfer coefficient is measured in every subsection of 75mm in effective heating length. Experimental ranges are as follows: the mass velocity of G = 100–700 kg/m2s, the inlet temperature of Tin = 5.9–11.4 °C and inlet pressure of about 0.5 MPa. The data of pressure drop are compared with a few previous correlations for small diameter tubes, and the correlations can predict the data relatively good agreement. The data of heat transfer coefficient is compared with the correlations of Yu et al. proposed for relatively large diameter tubes. It is found that there are some differences about two phase multiplier factor of convective heat transfer between the circular channel and rectangular channel.

In the rainy season, in tropical countries, to dry stuffs is difficult. Using electrical power or fossil energy is an expensive way. Therefore, it is wise to utilize heat waste. A device that can be used for this purpose is called radiator. The effect of mass flow rate on pressure drop and heat transfer for a dryer room radiator have been experimentally investigated. The room model size was 1000 mm x 1000 mm x 1000 mm made of plywood and the overall radiator dimension was 360 mm x 220 mm x 50 mm made of copper pipes with aluminium fins. Three mass flow rates were investigated namely 12.5 g/s, 14 g/s and 16.5 g/s. The water temperature at the entrance was increased gradually and then kept at 80°C. The maximum temperature reached in the dryer room was 50°C which was at the point just above the radiator. The effect of the mass flow rate on the room temperature was insignificant, while the effect on the pressure drop was significant. Moreover, the pressure drop decreased as the inlet temperature increased. In general, the radiator is recommended to be used as the heat source in a dryer room.

In this study, we investigated ways of improving the performance of heat exchangers, which are the heat pumps for use in hot-water supply systems on the hot-water supply side. Therefore, we verified experimentally the pressure drop and the heat transfer characteristics within the coiled flow channel. Five smooth copper tubes and five internally helical-grooved copper tubes with an outside diameter of 12.7 mm and coil diameters of 100 mm, 120 mm, 140 mm, 160 mm and 180 mm were used as the heat-transfer coiled tubes in the experiments. Experiments were conducted under conditions of constant isothermal heating and fluid flow inside coiled tubes with an inlet temperature of 20°C, and the flow rates of the fluid flow inside the coiled tubes were adjusted and varied to change the Reynolds number within the range of 900 to 25,000. Based on the experimental values, we proposed prediction equations to systematically calculate the friction factor and the heat transfer coefficient for different curvature radius ratios.

Spouted bed was simulated by a combining of Discrete Element Method (DEM) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) technique. In the simulation, DEM based on the Newton’s second law of motion was used to solve the particle motion and the fluid motion were obtained by CFD with the SIMPLE method and Upwind scheme. Programming was developed in Standard-C language and MATLABTM was used to visualize the results. The size of particles focused on this simulation is 2.5 mm in diameter (the density = 2,500 kg/m3, stiffness = 800 Nm -1). The time step used to maintain the stability of the simulation was 6.5 10-5 sec.In this simulation, three levels of the static bed height were studied: 45, 58, and 70 mm. The operating parameter effects (the static bed height on the pressure drop across the bed and the minimum spouting velocity) were investigated. The pressure drop across the bed and the minimum spouting velocity increased corresponding to the level increment. In the study of the pulsed and multi-pulsed frequency, it was found that the higher number of frequency introduced the higher heat transfer to the particles. Moreover, the effect of each type of flow on the average particles temperature was studied. The continuous flow gave the highest average particles temperature. Even though, the single pulsed flow and the multiple pulsed flows gave the lower heat transfer than continuous flow, the multiple flows produced a very good distribution in the heat transfer and also can reduce the dead zone problem of the spouted bed.

Plate heat exchangers have a widespread usage and the simplest parallel plate channel structures. Cross-corrugated ducts are basic channel geometries used in the plate heat exchangers. In this study, the increasing of heat transfer from the cross-corrugated triangular ducts by inserting triangular baffles with different placement angles into the channel upper side and pressure drop have been numerically investigated. Numerical calculations have been carried out to solve Navier-Stokes and energy equations by employing k-? turbulence model as 3-D and steady with ANSYS-FLUENT program. While inlet temperature of the air used as working fluid is 293 K, constant surface temperature values of the the lower corrugated channel walls are 373 K. The height of the baffle and apex angle of the corrugated duct have been taken constant as 0.5 H and 60?, respectively. Investigated Reynolds number range is 1000-6000 while the baffle placement angles are 30?, 45?, 60?, and 90?. Numerical results of this study are within 3.53% deviation with experimental study existed in literature. The obtained results have been presented as mean Nusselt number temperature and pressure variations of the fluid for each baffle angle. The temperature and velocity vector contour distributions have been also assessed for different Reynolds numbers and baffle angles. The value of the Num for the corrugated channel with 60? baffle angle is 8.2% higher than that of the 90? for the Re = 4000. Besides, for Re = 1000 the value of the pressure drop is 39% lower in the channel with 60? baffle angle than that of 90?.
