Abstract A specific phenomenon that has been observed in many experimental studies on turbomachinery compressors and fans is discussed under the term ‘rotating instabilities’. It is associated to a local aerodynamic phenomenon, typically occurring in the tip region at highly loaded near stall conditions and often linked to blade vibrations. Even though the effect has been discussed over more than two decades, a very ambiguous interpretation still prevails. A particular problem is that certain signatures in measurement data are often considered to characterize the phenomenon despite possible misinterpretations. The present paper illustrates that a specific image of a pulsating disturbance that has been established in the 1990s needs to be reconsidered. At the example of a recent investigation on a composite fan the difficulties concerning sensor placement and post-processing techniques is discussed with a focus on spectral averaging, isolation of non-synchronous phenomena and multi-sensor cross-correlation methods.

Liposomes have been utilized as a drug delivery system to increase the bioavailability of drugs and to control the rate of drug release at the target site of action. However, the occurrence of self-aggregation, coalescence, flocculation and the precipitation of aqueous liposomes during formulation or storage can cause degradation of the vesicle structure, leading to the decomposition of liposomes. To increase the stability of liposomes, post-processing techniques have been applied as an additional process to liposomes after formulation to remove water and generate dry liposome particles with a higher stability and greater accessibility for drug administration in comparison with aqueous liposomes. This review covers the effect of these techniques including freeze drying, spray drying and spray freeze drying on the stability, physicochemical properties and drug encapsulation efficiency of dry liposomes. The parameters affecting the properties of liposomes during the drying process are also highlighted in this review. In addition, the impact of using a protective agent to overcome such limitations of each process is thoroughly discussed through various studies.

Анализ официальных источников информации показывает, что распределение экстремальных дождей по территории происходит с учетом микроклиматических особенностей ее местности. Для оценки степени достоверности таких закономерностей в пределах мегаполисов проведены экспериментальные исследования, в которых в качестве экспериментальной базы принята система водоотведения Санкт-Петербурга, в качестве средств измерения – сеть из 34 автоматических осадкомеров, осуществляющих записи с интервалом 5 минут, в качестве экспериментальной информации – база данных результатов измерений в течение шести лет. В результате исследований установлено, что в городской среде формируется микроклимат, отличающийся от климата за ее пределами. Кроме того, в масштабах мегаполисов имеются микроклиматические зоны, в которых зависимости интенсивностей осадков от их повторяемости могут существенно отличаться. При этом отличия начинают проявляться при периодах р однократного превышения расчетной интенсивности дождей от 1,5–2 лет, а при их меньших значениях отличия не выявлены. Полученный результат согласуется с данными исследований других авторов, экспериментально установивших, что количество экстремальных дождей увеличивается в тех районах мегаполисов, как правило, исторических,в которых меньше зеленых насаждений и, соответственно, более высокая степень перегрева поверхности в летнее время. The analysis of official data resources shows that the distribution of extreme rainfall over the territory is carried out with account of the microclimatic features of the area. To estimate the degree of reliability of such patterns within megalopolises, experimental studies were carried out, where the wastewater disposal system of St. Petersburg was assumed as an experimental base; a network of 34 automatic rain gauges recording with an interval of 5 minutes was assumed as a measuring instrument, and a base was used as experimental information, i. e., a measurement data base for six years. As a result of the research, it has been established that a microclimate is formed in the urban environment that differs from the climate outside it. Besides, on a megacity scale, there are microclimatic zones where the dependences of precipitation intensities on their frequency can differ significantly. In this case, the differences begin to manifest at periods p of one-time excess of the calculated rainfall intensity from 1.5–2 years, whereas at lower values, no differences have been found. The result obtained is consistent with the research data obtained by other authors, who experimentally established that the amount of extreme rainfall increased in those areas of megacities, as a rule, historical ones, where fewer green spaces are located, and, accordingly, a higher degree of surface overheating in summer is recorded.

Introduction: Assessing Alberta Stroke Program Early CT Score (ASPECTS) and identifying hyperdense arteries on non-contrast CT (NCCT) are important components of decision-making in acute stroke. Conventional practice uses 5mm averaged slice thickness NCCT for interpretation of these features. We have systematically evaluated several post processing techniques on NCCT to determine if there is improved reliability in identification of ASPECTS and hyperdense artery. Methodology: We assessed four post-processing techniques on NCCT namely (1) 5mm averaged thickness (2) Minimum Intensity Projection (mIP) - 5mm thickness (3) thin slices (0.625mm) and (4) Maximum Intensity Projection (MIP) - 5mm thickness (Figure 1). Three raters (student, fellow and expert) independently assessed 100 NCCT scans from the PRoveIT database. All scans were read at four different times 10-14 days apart. At each time-point the post processing modality was changed and the patient order randomized. Information on side of suspected infarction was provided. Raters were asked to score ASPECTS and identify presence of hyperdense artery at each reading. Inter-rater reliability was assessed using Intra-cluster correlation (ICC) for ASPECTS and weighted kappa (wKap) for hyperdense artery. Results: The highest inter-rater reliability was found with the MIP technique (ICC 0.42; p<0.001), followed by 5 mm average, mIP and thin slice respectively (ICC 0.33, 0.32, 0.20; all p<0.01). Highest agreement for hyperdense vessel detection was noted with thin slice (wKap 0.30; p<0.001) followed by Average, MIPs and mIPs respectively (wKap 0.25, 0.18, 0.13; all p <0.05). Conclusion: The use of MIP images for ASPECTS grading and thin images for hyperdense vessel detection improves reliability on NCCT. These simple processing steps are easily available on any modern scanner and may help improve patient care.

As a promising active flow control method, boundary layer suction (BLS) can be used to enhance the aerodynamic performance of the highly-loaded compressor effectively, and due to this reason, extensive studies have been carried out on it. However, contrast to those abundant studies focusing on the flow control effects of BLS, little attention has been paid on the design method of the aspiration flow path. This work presents a 3-D steady numerical simulation on a highly-loaded aspirated compressor cascade. The aspiration slot is implemented at its best location based on the previous experimental studies and the aspiration flow rate is fix to 1.5% of the inlet massflow. The plenum configuration follows the blade shape and remains unchanged. One-side-aspiration manner is adopted to simplify the aspiration devices. Two critical geometry parameters, slot angle and slot width, are varied to study the effects of blade aspiration slot configuration on the cascade loss, radial distribution of the aspiration flow rate and inner flow structures within the aspiration flow path. Results show that the slot configuration does affect the cascade performance. In comparison with the throughflow performance, it is especially true once the flow loss caused by the aspiration flow path is also taken into account, and higher flow loss will be generated within the aspiration flow path if an inappropriate scheme is adopted. In the present investigation, apart from the cases with larger negative slot angle, a wider slot is more preferable to a narrower one, since it could enhance the aspiration capacity near the endwall regions and lower the dissipation loss within the aspiration flow path. In terms of the slot angle, a larger negative value, i.e., the slot direction more aligned with the incoming flow, is not beneficial to improve the throughflow performance, while concerning the flow loss yield by the aspiration flow path, a proper negative slot angle is always optimal.

Additive manufacturing (AM) processes can produce three-dimensional (3D) near-net-shape parts based on computer-aided design (CAD) models. Compared to traditional manufacturing processes, AM processes can generate parts with intricate geometries, operational flexibility and reduced manufacturing time, thus saving time and money. On the other hand, AM processes face complex issues, including poor surface finish, unwanted microstructure phases, defects, wear tracks, reduced corrosion resistance and reduced fatigue life. These problems prevent AM parts from real-time operational applications. Post-processing techniques, including laser shock peening, laser polishing, conventional machining methods and thermal processes, are usually applied to resolve these issues. These processes have proved their capability to enhance the surface characteristics and physical and mechanical properties. In this study, various post-processing techniques and their implementations have been compiled. The effect of post-processing techniques on additively manufactured parts has been discussed. It was found that laser shock peening (LSP) can cause severe strain rate generation, especially in thinner components. LSP can control the surface regularities and local grain refinement, thus elevating the hardness value. Laser polishing (LP) can reduce surface roughness up to 95% and increase hardness, collectively, compared to the as-built parts. Conventional machining processes enhance surface quality; however, their influence on hardness has not been proved yet. Thermal post-processing techniques are applied to eliminate porosity up to 99.99%, increase corrosion resistance, and finally, the mechanical properties’ elevation. For future perspectives, to prescribe a particular post-processing technique for specific defects, standardization is necessary. This study provides a detailed overview of the post-processing techniques applied to enhance the mechanical and physical properties of AM-ed parts. A particular method can be chosen based on one’s requirements.

This paper presents GIS-based methodology for urban area driving cycle construction. The approach reaches beyond the frames of usual driving cycle development methods and takes into account another perspective of data collection. Rather than planning data collection, the approach is based on available in-vehicle measurement data post processing using Geographic Information Systems to manipulate the excessive database and extract only the representative and geographically limited individual trip data. With such data post processing the data was carefully adjusted to include only the data that describe representative driving in Ljubljana urban area. The selected method for the driving cycle development is based on searching for the best microtrips combination while minimizing the difference between two vectors; one based on generated cycle and the other on the database. Accounting for a large random sample of actual trip data, our approach enables more representative area-specific driving cycle development than the previously used techniques.
