Abstract Low stress interrupted creep test, as an interim compromise, can provide essential data for creep deformation design. However, there are no clear guidelines on the characterization of the terminating time for interrupted low-stress creep test. To obtain a suitable terminating time in terms of economy and effectiveness, long-term creep strain data of 9%Cr steels are collected from literatures and their creep deformation characterization is analyzed. First, the variations of normalized time and strain of each creep stage with the stress level are discussed. Then, the effect of the terminating time on final fitted results of Norton–Bailey equation is estimated. Third, the relationship between demarcation points at different creep stages and minimum/steady-state creep rate is analyzed. The results indicate that when the creep rupture life is considered as an important factor for creep design, the tertiary creep stage is of greatest significance due to the largest life fraction and creep strain fraction at low stress level. However, the primary and secondary creep stages are of great significance for design due to their larger contribution to 1% limited creep strain. And the long-term secondary creep data could be extrapolated by combining the primary creep strain data obtained from interrupted creep tests with the time to onset of tertiary creep derived from a similar Monkman–Grant relationship.

Additive creep rate model has been developed to predict creep strain-time behavior of materials important to engineering creep design of components for high temperature applications. The model has two additive formulations: the first one is related to sine hyperbolic rate equation describing primary and secondary creep deformation based on the evolution of internal stress with strain/time, and the second defines the tertiary creep rate as a function of tertiary creep strain. In order to describe creep data accurately, tertiary creep rate relation based on MPC-Omega methodology has been appropriately modified. The applicability of the model has been demonstrated for tempered martensitic plain 9Cr-1Mo steel for different applied stresses at 873 K. Based on the observations, a power law relationship between internal stress and applied stress has been established for the steel. Further, a higher creep damage accumulation with increasing life fraction has been observed at low stresses than those obtained at high stresses.

Fluid flow and fluid-rock interaction mainly take place in fracture network, consequently resulting in deformation and permeability variation of rock and deterioration of the wellbore performance. Mechanical-reactive flow coupling creep tests are performed on cracked granite under various confining pressures and acid and alkaline solution flows. The testing results show that the confining pressure and solution pH significantly influence the creep deformation, creep strain rate, and permeability. A primary creep stage and secondary creep stage are observed in all creep tests in this study; notably, the sample under a confining pressure of 10 MPa and acid solution injection undergoes creep failure for over 2700 hours. The acid solution has a more obvious influence on the creep behavior than that of the alkaline solution. With an increase in confining pressure, the total creep strain and creep strain rate in the samples gradually decrease during the injection of either solution. The permeability of the samples injected with either solution gradually deceases during the testing process, and this deceasing rate increases with the confining pressure. The scanning electron microscopy observations on the crack surfaces after the creep tests show that the surfaces of the fractures injected with the acid solution are smooth due to the dissolution of the matrix, while those injected with the alkaline solution include voids due to the dissolution of quartz. These experimental results could improve the understanding of the long-term transport and mechanical behaviors of wellbore.

A method is proposed for estimating structural creep deformation due to histories of cyclic proportional loading. The method applies to structures composed of materials whose creep strain due to constant uniaxial stress is given by an equation of the form ε(t)/ε0={σ/σ0}n{t/t0}m Knowledge of the form of the creep law for time-varying stress is not required, as use is made of an effective stress obtained from a single cyclic creep test.

The applicability of the Monkman-Grant relationship was analyzed and validated for ultrafine-grained metallic materials under investigation. A special attention has been given to the creep damage tolerance factor which is defined as the ratio of the strain to fracture to the Monkman-Grant ductility and which describes the coupling between creep deformation and damage based on continuum creep damage approach. It was found, that ultrafine-grained materials generally obey the Monkman-Grant relationship, however, the relationship is especially suitable for materials exhibiting short secondary creep and long tertiary creep stages when dislocation-controlled creep is dominant.

To investigate the time-dependent mechanical properties of rock masses in cold regions under the effects of freeze-thaw cycling and long-term loading, triaxial multilevel loading and unloading creep tests were performed on saturated red sandstone samples subjected to different numbers of freeze-thaw cycles. The effects of freeze-thaw cycles and confining pressure on the creep properties, long-term strength, and creep failure mode of the rock were analyzed. The effect of freeze-thaw cycles on the microstructure of the rock was analyzed using scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that as the number of freeze-thaw cycles increased, the rock particle boundaries became more distinct, and more pores formed. The effect of freeze-thaw cycles on the creep deformation of red sandstone was related to the loading stress level. At low stress levels, the rock viscoelastic strain increased gradually and almost linearly with an increasing number of freeze-thaw cycles; in contrast, at high stress levels, the rock viscoelastic strain increased nonlinearly. The viscoplastic strain increased almost linearly with increasing freeze-thaw cycles. The fourth loading stress level (70% σ c ) corresponded to the transition of the creep deformation of the red sandstone. When the confining pressure was low, a higher stress level caused the confining pressure to have a more significant effect on the creep strain. However, as the confining pressure continued to increase, the effect of the confining pressure on the creep strain eventually disappeared. The long-term strength of the red sandstone decreased approximately linearly with an increase in the number of freeze-thaw cycles. When the number of freeze-thaw cycles and the confining pressure were high, the rock samples formed a transverse shear plane and were more fragmented than those without a transverse shear plane. These results provide a reference for construction in rock mass engineering and long-term stability analysis in cold regions.

In this investigation, the uniaxial short-term creep tests with multi-step loading were conducted on the sandstone-coal composite samples, and the characteristics of creep strength, creep deformation, acoustic emission (AE), and creep failure of composite samples were studied, respectively. The creep strength of the composite sample decreased with the stress-level duration, which was mainly determined by the coal and influenced by the interactions with the sandstone. The creep deformation and damage of sandstone weakened the deformation and damage accumulation within the coal, resulting in the larger strength for the composite sample compared with the pure coal sample. The axial creep strain of composite sample generally increased with the stress-level or the stress-level duration under same conditions. The AE characteristics of composite sample were related to the creep strain rate, the stress level, the stress level duration, and the local failure or fracture during creep loading. The micro or macro failure and fracture within the composite sample caused the rise in the axial creep strains and the frequency and intensity of AE signals, especially the macro failure and fracture. The creep failures of composite samples mainly occurred within the coal with the splitting ejection failure accompanied by the local shear failure, and no obvious failures were found within the sandstone. The coal in the composite sample became more broken with the stress-level duration.

A finite element calculation was performed to investigate the effect of differences in the type of creep constitutive equation on the distributions of strain and stress on the net section of notched cylindrical bars subjected to large deformation. Three different types of creep constitutive equation were employed; they are of primary-tertiary creep, primary-secondary creep and tertiary creep. The effect of type of creep constitutive equation on the creep strain components versus deformation at the net section 2 In(d0/d) relations and on the distribution of axial creep strain decreases with decreasing notch radius. For a small notch radius the values of creep strain components on the net section are determined to a high degree of accuracy only by two factors of notch radius and 2 In(d0/d). The deep concave distribution of axial creep strain and high strain concentration are maintained during creep deformation. The axial and equivalent stresses versus 2 In(d0/d) relations are strongly affected by the difference in type of creep constitutive equation.

Abstract In this study, a qualification of accelerated creep-resistance of Inconel 718 is assessed using the novel Wilshire-Cano-Stewart (WCS) model and the stepped isostress method (SSM) and predictions are made to conventional creep data. Conventional creep testing (CCT) is a long-term continuous process, in fact, the ASME B&PV III requires that 10,000+ hours of experiments must be conducted to each heat for materials employed in boilers and/or pressure vessel components. This process is costly and not feasible for rapid development of new materials. As an alternative, accelerated creep testing techniques have been developed to reduce the time needed to characterize the creep resistance of materials. Most techniques are based upon the time-temperature-stress superposition principle (TTSSP) that predicts minimum-creep-strain-rate (MCSR) and stress-rupture behaviors but lack the ability to predict creep deformation and consider deformation mechanisms that occur for experiments of longer duration. The stepped isostress method (SSM) has been developed which enables the prediction of creep deformation response as well as reduce the time needed for qualification of materials. The SSM approach has been successful for polymer, polymeric composites, and recently has been introduced for metals. In this study, the WCS constitutive model, calibrated to SSM test data, qualifies the creep resistance of Inconel 718 at 750°C and predictions are compared to CCT data. The WCS model has proven to make long-term predictions for stress-rupture, minimum-creep-strain-rate (MCSR), creep deformation, and damage in metallic materials. The SSM varies stress levels after time interval adding damage to the material, which can be tracked by the WCS model. The SSM data is calibrated into the model and the WCS model generates realistic predictions of stress-rupture, MSCR, damage, and creep deformation. The calibrated material constants are used to generate predictions of stress-rupture and are post-audit validated using the National Institute of Material Science (NIMS) database. Similarly, the MCSR predictions are compared from previous studies. Finally the creep deformation predictions are compared with real data and is determined that the results are well in between the expected boundaries. Material characterization and mechanical properties can be determined at a faster rate and with a more cost-effective method. This is beneficial for multiple applications such as in additive manufacturing, composites, spacecraft, and Industrial Gas Turbines (IGT).

This paper reviews the development of an equation for the prediction of long-term creep strain and creep life. Originally, this relationship was successfully applied to 1/2 Cr-1/2 Mo-1/4 V ferritic steel, and present data suggest similar success with the 2-1/4 Cr-1 Mo material. The implications of this extrapolation technique are discussed and the consequences for plant-life assessment are considered.
