An OpenFOAM-Based Extension of Low-Re k–ε Model to the Partially Averaged Navier–Stokes Methodology for Simulating Separated Flows With Heat Transfer

Abstract The partially averaged Navier–Stokes (PANS) methodology is known to give improved performance over the traditional Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) formulation at an affordable computational cost. Over the years, PANS has gained popularity in both industry and academia. In this work, we strive to improve the performance of the k–ε-based PANS methodology by formulating a low-Reynolds-number (LRN) k–ε model-based PANS closure. We have compared the PANS closure based on Launder-Sharma k–ε model (LSKE) with PANS closure based on the conventional two-layer k–ε model (TLKE) in the classical case of separated flow past a heated square cylinder at Reynolds number (Re) of 21,400. The PANS methodologies are compared on the basis of flow hydrodynamics, heat transfer rate, and computational time. These methodologies are compared with the benchmark experimental and direct numerical simulation (DNS) results. The PANS + LSKE methodology clearly outperforms the conventional PANS + TLKE methodology in predicting the flow hydrodynamics and is computationally much faster as well. Moreover, the performance of the LSKE model in conjunction with the PANS methodology is found to be comparable to the more recent models like the shear stress transport (SST)–k–ω and the k–ε–ζ–f model. In heat transfer aspects, the performance of LSKE (with Yap correction)-based closure is the best on the stagnation surface, while the LSKE (without Yap correction)-based closure performs comparably better on the lateral and rear surfaces.

A power-law relation is derived between the Stanton number and the Reynolds number, expressing the law of heat transfer for a wall adjacent to a region of turbulent separated flow. The derivation is based on Prandtl's (1945) proposal for the laws of dissipation, diffusion and generation of turbulent kinetic energy. The constants appearing in these laws are determined by reference to experimental data for the hydrodynamic properties of the constant-stress and the linear-stress layers.The agreement between the resulting predictions and the experimental data of other workers is sufficiently good to suggest that the actual mechanism of heat transfer from separated flows has much in common with that which is postulated. Closer agreement can be expected only after the present one-dimensional analysis has been superseded by a two-dimensional one.

AbstractThis study presents two-dimensional aerodynamic investigations of various high-lift configuration settings concerning the deflection angles of droop nose, spoiler and flap in the context of enhancing the high-lift performance by dynamic flap movement. The investigations highlight the impact of a periodically oscillating trailing edge flap on lift, drag and flow separation of the high-lift configuration by numerical simulations. The computations are conducted with regard to the variation of the parameters reduced frequency and the position of the rotational axis. The numerical flow simulations are conducted on a block-structured grid using Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes simulations employing the shear stress transport $$k-\omega $$ k - ω turbulence model. The feature Dynamic Mesh Motion implements the motion of the oscillating flap. Regarding low-speed wind tunnel testing for a Reynolds number of $$0.5 \times 10^{6}$$ 0.5 × 10 6 the flap movement around a dropped hinge point, which is located outside the flap, offers benefits with regard to additional lift and delayed flow separation at the flap compared to a flap movement around a hinge point, which is located at 15 % of the flap chord length. Flow separation can be suppressed beyond the maximum static flap deflection angle. By means of an oscillating flap around the dropped hinge point, it is possible to reattach a separated flow at the flap and to keep it attached further on. For a Reynolds number of $$20 \times 10^6$$ 20 × 10 6 , reflecting full scale flight conditions, additional lift is generated for both rotational axis positions.

The study of flows with a high degree of turbulence in boundary layers, near-wall jets, gas curtains, separated flows behind various obstacles, as well as during combustion is of great importance for increasing energy efficiency of the flow around various elements in the ducts of gas-dynamic installations. This paper gives some general characteristics of experimental work on the study of friction and heat transfer on a smooth surface, in near-wall jets, and gas curtains under conditions of increased free-stream turbulence. Taking into account the significant effect of high external turbulence on dynamics and heat transfer of separated flows, a similar effect on the flow behind various obstacles is analyzed. First of all, the classical cases of flow separation behind a single backward-facing step and a rib are considered. Then, more complex cases of the flow around a rib oriented at different angles to the flow are analyzed, as well as a system of ribs and a transverse trench with straight and inclined walls in a turbulent flow around them. The features of separated flow in a turbulized stream around a cylinder, leading to an increase in the width of the vortex wake, frequency of vortex separation, and increase in the average heat transfer coefficient are analyzed. The experimental results of the author are compared with data of other researchers. The structure of separated flow at high turbulence—characteristic dimensions of the separation region, parameters of the mixing layer, and pressure distribution—are compared with the conditions of low-turbulent flow. Much attention is paid to thermal characteristics: temperature profiles across the shear layer, temperature distributions over the surface, and local and average heat transfer coefficients. It is shown that external turbulence has a much stronger effect on the separated flow than on the boundary layer on a flat surface. For separated flows, its intensifying effect on heat transfer is more pronounced behind a rib than behind a step. The factor of heat transfer intensification by external turbulence is most pronounced in the transverse cavity and in the system of ribs.

The boundary layer development and convective heat transfer on transonic turbine nozzle vanes are investigated using a compressible Navier–Stokes code with three low-Reynolds-number k–ε models. The mean-flow and turbulence transport equations are integrated by a four-stage Runge–Kutta scheme. Numerical predictions are compared with the experimental data acquired at Allison Engine Company. An assessment of the performance of various turbulence models is carried out. The two modes of transition, bypass transition and separation-induced transition, are studied comparatively. Effects of blade surface pressure gradients, free-stream turbulence level, and Reynolds number on the blade boundary layer development, particularly transition onset, are examined. Predictions from a parabolic boundary layer code are included for comparison with those from the elliptic Navier–Stokes code. The present study indicates that the turbine external heat transfer, under real engine conditions, can be predicted well by the Navier–Stokes procedure with the low-Reynolds-number k–ε models employed.

Abstract In this paper, experimental and numerical investigations of three variants of internal cooling configurations — dimples only, ribs only and ribs with dimples have been explored at process conditions (96°C and 207bar) with sCO2 as the coolant. The designs were chosen based on a review of advanced internal cooling features typically used for air-breathing gas turbines. The experimental study described in this paper utilizes additively manufactured square channels with the cooling features over a range of Reynolds number from 80,000 to 250,000. Nusselt number is calculated in the experiments utilizing the Wilson Plot method and three heat transfer characteristics — augmentation in Nusselt number, friction factor and overall Thermal Performance Factor (TPF) are reported. To explore the effect of surface roughness introduced due to additive manufacturing, two baseline channel flow cases are considered — a conventional smooth tube and an additively manufactured square tube. A companion computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation is also performed for the corresponding cooling configurations reported in the experiments using the Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) based turbulence model. Both experimental and computational results show increasing Nusselt number augmentation as higher Reynolds numbers are approached, whereas prior work on internal cooling of air-breathing gas turbines predict a decay in the heat transfer enhancement as Reynolds number increases. Comparing cooling features, it is observed that the “ribs only” and “ribs with dimples” configurations exhibit higher Nusselt number augmentation at all Reynolds numbers compared to the “dimples only” and the “no features” configurations. However, the frictional losses are almost an order of magnitude higher in presence of ribs.

The present study deals with the numerical simulation of mixed convective heat transfer from an unconfined heated square cylinder using nanofluids (Al2O3-water) for Reynolds number (Re) 10–150, Richardson number (Ri) 0–1, and nanoparticles volume fractions (φ) 0–5%. Two-phase modelling approach (i.e., Eulerian-mixture model) is adopted to analyze the flow and heat transfer characteristics of nanofluids. A square cylinder with a constant temperature higher than that of the ambient is exposed to a uniform flow. The governing equations are discretized and solved by using a finite volume method employing the SIMPLE algorithm for pressure–velocity coupling. The thermo-physical properties of nanofluids are calculated from the theoretical models using a single-phase approach. The flow and heat transfer characteristics of nanofluids are studied for considered parameters and compared with those of the base fluid. The temperature field and flow structure around the square cylinder are visualized and compared for single and multi-phase approaches. The thermal performance under thermal buoyancy conditions for both steady and unsteady flow regimes is presented. Minor variations in flow and thermal characteristics are observed between the two approaches for the range of nanoparticle volume fractions considered. Variation in φ affects CD when Reynolds number is varied from 10 to 50. Beyond Reynolds number 50, no significant change in CD is observed with change in φ. The local and mean Nusselt numbers increase with Reynolds number, Richardson number, and nanoparticle volume fraction. For instance, the mean Nusselt number of nanofluids at Re = 100, φ = 5%, and Ri = 1 is approximately 12.4% higher than that of the base fluid. Overall, the thermal enhancement ratio increases with φ and decreases with Re regardless of Ri variation.

With the objective of reducing the computational cost of the iterative processes of aerodynamic components design, tests were carried out to study under what conditions, and with what difference, only part of the calculation domain can be solved using as input information obtained from complete simulations already solved. An experimental study of an airfoil exposed to the wake interference of an upstream airfoil at a Reynolds number of 150,000 was used to verify the solutions of the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations solved applying the k-ω Shear Stress Transport model for turbulence closure. A Grid Convergence Index study was performed to verify if the solution of the equations for the adopted discretization leads to results within the asymptotic range. With the physical coherence of the numerical methodology verified, comparisons between the simulations with the domain comprising the two airfoils and the domain comprising only the downstream airfoil were performed. Computational time reductions in the order of 40% are observed. The differences in the aerodynamic coefficients for the two types of simulation are presented as a function of distances non-dimensionalized by the characteristic length of the body that disturbs the flow forming the wake, showing that the difference between the two methods was inversely proportional to the distance between the two bodies. Behavior that was maintained until a point where the simulation diverges, equivalent to 25% of the characteristic length of the body that generates the wake.

In this study, validations of Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes Simulation (RANS) based on Kenjeres & Hanjalic MHD turbulence model (Int. J. Heat & Fluid Flow, 21, 2000) coupled with the low-Reynolds number k-epsilon model have been conducted with the usage of Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) database. DNS database of turbulent channel flow imposed wall-normal magnetic field on, are established in condition of bulk Reynolds number 40000, Hartmann number 24, and Prandtl number 5. As the results, the Nagano & Shimada model (Trans. JSME series B. 59, 1993) coupled with Kenjeres & Hanjalic MHD turbulence model has the better availability compared with Myong & Kasagi model (Int. Fluid Eng, 109, 1990) in estimation of the heat transfer degradation in MHD turbulent heat transfer.

The unsteady viscous flow and heat transfer in the vicinity of an axisymmetric stagnation point of an infinite moving cylinder with time-dependent axial velocity and with uniform normal transpiration Uo are investigated. The impinging free stream is steady and with a constant strain rate k¯. An exact solution of the Navier–Stokes equations and energy equation is derived in this problem. A reduction of these equations is obtained by use of appropriate transformations for the most general case when the transpiration rate is also time-dependent but results are presented only for uniform values of this quantity. The general self-similar solution is obtained when the axial velocity of the cylinder and its wall temperature or its wall heat flux vary as specified time-dependent functions. In particular, the cylinder may move with constant speed, with exponentially increasing–decreasing axial velocity, with harmonically varying axial speed, or with accelerating–decelerating oscillatory axial speed. For self-similar flow, the surface temperature or its surface heat flux must have the same types of behavior as the cylinder motion. For completeness, sample semisimilar solutions of the unsteady Navier–Stokes and energy equations have been obtained numerically using a finite-difference scheme. Some of these solutions are presented for special cases when the time-dependent axial velocity of the cylinder is a step-function, and a ramp function. All the solutions above are presented for Reynolds numbers, Re=ka¯2/2υ, ranging from 0.1 to 100 for different values of dimensionless transpiration rate, S=Uo/ka¯, where a is cylinder radius and υ is kinematic viscosity of the fluid. Absolute value of the shear-stresses corresponding to all the cases increase with the increase of Reynolds number and suction rate. The maximum value of the shear- stress increases with increasing oscillation frequency and amplitude. An interesting result is obtained in which a cylinder moving with certain exponential axial velocity function at any particular value of Reynolds number and suction rate is axially stress-free. The heat transfer coefficient increases with the increasing suction rate, Reynolds number, Prandtl number, oscillation frequency and amplitude. Interesting means of cooling and heating processes of cylinder surface are obtained using different rates of transpiration. It is shown that a cylinder with certain type of exponential wall temperature exposed to a temperature difference has no heat transfer.

A numerical model was included in a three-dimensional viscous solver to account for real gas effects in the compressible Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations. The behavior of real gases is reproduced by using gas property tables. The method consists of a local fitting of gas data to provide the thermodynamic property required by the solver in each solution step. This approach presents several characteristics which make it attractive as a design tool for industrial applications. First of all, the implementation of the method in the solver is simple and straightforward, since it does not require relevant changes in the solver structure. Moreover, it is based on a low-computational-cost algorithm, which prevents a considerable increase in the overall computational time. Finally, the approach is completely general, since it allows one to handle any type of gas, gas mixture or steam over a wide operative range. In this work a detailed description of the model is provided. In addition, some examples are presented in which the model is applied to the thermo-fluid-dynamic analysis of industrial turbomachines.
