An experimental investigation of fluid flow friction and heat transfer coefficient in simultaneously developing flow through a multiport microchannel flat tube (MMFT) was presented. The cross-sectional geometries of five tubes were rectangular with hydraulic diameters of 0.8–1.33 mm and aspect ratio of 0.44–0.94. The working fluid was water, and the Reynolds number was in the range 150–4500. The experiment result showed that friction factor was successfully predicted by classical correlation in laminar regime, whereas the laminar–turbulent transition in the developing flow was not as obvious as in the completely developed flow. The greater aspect ratio produced stronger heat transfer capacity in the developing flow, although the effect of the aspect ratio decreased at increased Reynolds numbers for heat transfer characteristics. Moreover, the scale effect improved the heat transfer performance of MMFTs, especially at high Reynolds numbers.

Flow in the internal three-pass serpentine rib turbulated passages of an advanced high pressure rotor blade is simulated on a 1:1 scale in the laboratory. Tests to measure the effect of rotation on the Nusselt number are conducted at rotation numbers up to 0.4 and Reynolds numbers from 75,000 to 165,000. To achieve this similitude, pressurized Freon R134a vapor is utilized as the working fluid. Experimental heat transfer coefficient measurements are made using the copper-plate regional average method. Regional heat transfer coefficients are correlated with rotation numbers. An increase in heat transfer rates due to rotation is observed in radially outward passes; a reduction in heat transfer rate is observed in the radially inward pass. Strikingly, a significant deterioration in heat transfer is noticed in the “hub” region—between the radially inward second pass and the radially outward third pass. This heat transfer reduction is critical for turbine cooling designs.

Experiments to investigate heat transfer and pressure loss are performed in a rectangular channel with an aspect ratio of 6 at very high Reynolds numbers under compressible flow conditions. Reynolds numbers up to 1.3 × 106 are tested. The presence of a turbulated wall and the resultant heat transfer enhancement against a smooth surface is investigated. Three dimpled configurations including spherical and cylindrical dimples are studied on one wide wall of the channel. The presence of discrete ribs on the same wide wall is also investigated. A steady state heat transfer measurement method is used to obtain the heat transfer coefficients while pressure taps located at several streamwise locations in the channel walls are used to record the static pressures on the surface. Experiments are performed for a wide range of Reynolds numbers from the incompressible (Re = 100,000–500,000; Mach = 0.04–0.19) to compressible flow regimes (Re = 900,000–1,300,000, Mach = 0.35–0.5). Results for low Reynolds numbers are compared to existing heat transfer data available in open literature for similar configurations. Heat transfer enhancement is found to decrease at high Re with the discrete rib configurations providing the best enhancement but highest pressure losses. However, the small spherical dimples show the best thermal performance. Results can be used for the combustor liner back side cooling at high Reynolds number flow conditions. Local measurements using the steady state, hue-detection based liquid crystal technique are also performed in the fully developed region for case 1 with large spherical dimples. Good comparison is obtained between averaged local heat transfer coefficient measurements and from thermocouple measurements.

An experimental and numerical study was conducted to determine the thermal performance of V-shaped ribs in a rectangular channel with an aspect ratio of 2:1. Local heat transfer coefficients were measured using the steady state thermochromic liquid crystal technique. Periodic pressure losses were obtained with pressure taps along the smooth channel sidewall. Reynolds numbers from 95,000 to 500,000 were investigated with V-shaped ribs located on one side or on both sides of the test channel. The rib height-to-hydraulic diameter ratios (e/Dh) were 0.0625 and 0.02, and the rib pitch-to-height ratio (P/e) was 10. In addition, all test cases were investigated numerically. The commercial software FLUENT™ was used with a two-layer k-ε turbulence model. Numerically and experimentally obtained data were compared. It was determined that the heat transfer enhancement based on the heat transfer of a smooth wall levels off for Reynolds numbers over 200,000. The introduction of a second ribbed sidewall slightly increased the heat transfer enhancement whereas the pressure penalty was approximately doubled. Diminishing the rib height at high Reynolds numbers had the disadvantage of a slightly decreased heat transfer enhancement, but benefits in a significantly reduced pressure loss. At high Reynolds numbers small-scale ribs in a one-sided ribbed channel were shown to have the best thermal performance.

Heat transfer distributions are presented for a stationary three passage serpentine internal cooling channel for a range of engine representative Reynolds numbers. The spacing between the sidewalls of the serpentine passage is fixed and the aspect ratio (AR) is adjusted to 1:1, 1:2, and 1:6 by changing the distance between the top and bottom walls. Data are presented for aspect ratios of 1:1 and 1:6 for smooth passage walls and for aspect ratios of 1:1, 1:2, and 1:6 for passages with two surfaces turbulated. For the turbulated cases, turbulators skewed 45° to the flow are installed on the top and bottom walls. The square turbulators are arranged in an offset parallel configuration with a fixed rib pitch-to-height ratio (P/e) of 10 and a rib height-to-hydraulic diameter ratio (e/Dh) range of 0.100 to 0.058 for AR 1:1 to 1:6, respectively. The experiments span a Reynolds number range of 4,000 to 130,000 based on the passage hydraulic diameter. While this experiment utilizes a basic layout similar to previous research, it is the first to run an aspect ratio as large as 1:6, and it also pushes the Reynolds number to higher values than were previously available for the 1:2 aspect ratio. The results demonstrate that while the normalized Nusselt number for the AR 1:2 configuration changes linearly with Reynolds number up to 130,000, there is a significant change in flow behavior between Re = 25,000 and Re = 50,000 for the aspect ratio 1:6 case. This suggests that while it may be possible to interpolate between points for different flow conditions, each geometric configuration must be investigated independently. The results show the highest heat transfer and the greatest heat transfer enhancement are obtained with the AR 1:6 configuration due to greater secondary flow development for both the smooth and turbulated cases. This enhancement was particularly notable for the AR 1:6 case for Reynolds numbers at or above 50,000.

Systematic experiments are conducted to measure heat transfer enhancement and pressure loss characteristics on a square channel (simulating a gas turbine blade cooling passage) with two opposite surfaces roughened by 45 deg parallel ribs. Copper plates fitted with a silicone heater and instrumented with thermocouples are used to measure regionally averaged local heat transfer coefficients. Reynolds numbers studied in the channel range from 30,000 to 400,000. The rib height (e) to hydraulic diameter (D) ratio ranges from 0.1 to 0.18. The rib spacing (p) to height ratio (p/e) ranges from 5 to 10. Results show higher heat transfer coefficients at smaller values of p/e and larger values of e/D, though at the cost of higher friction losses. Results also indicate that the thermal performance of the ribbed channel falls with increasing Reynolds numbers. Correlations predicting Nusselt number (Nu) and friction factor (f¯) as a function of p/e, e/D, and Re are developed. Also developed are correlations for R and G (friction and heat transfer roughness functions, respectively) as a function of the roughness Reynolds number (e+), p/e, and e/D.

This paper experimentally investigates the effect of rotation on heat transfer in typical turbine blade serpentine coolant passage with ribbed walls at low Mach numbers. To achieve the low Mach number (around 0.01) condition, pressurized Freon R-134a vapor is utilized as the working fluid. The flow in the first passage is radial outward, after the 180 deg tip turn the flow is radial inward to the second passage, and after the 180 deg hub turn the flow is radial outward to the third passage. The effects of rotation on the heat transfer coefficients were investigated at rotation numbers up to 0.6 and Reynolds numbers from 30,000 to 70,000. Heat transfer coefficients were measured using the thermocouples-copper-plate-heater regional average method. Heat transfer results are obtained over a wide range of Reynolds numbers and rotation numbers. An increase in heat transfer rates due to rotation is observed in radially outward passes; a reduction in heat transfer rate is observed in the radially inward pass. Regional heat transfer coefficients are correlated with Reynolds numbers for nonrotation and with rotation numbers for rotating condition, respectively. The results can be useful for understanding real rotor blade coolant passage heat transfer under low Mach number, medium–high Reynolds number, and high rotation number conditions.

Recently, several publications gave attention to nanofluid based solar absorber systems in which the solar radiation energy is directly absorbed in the volume of the fluid. This idea could provide advantages over conventionally used surface absorbers regarding the optical and thermal efficiency. For the evaluation of this concept, a numerical approach is introduced and validated in this contribution. The results show that the optical efficiency of a volumetric absorber strongly depends on the scattering behavior of the nanofluid and can reach competitive values only if the particle size distribution is narrow and small. If this is achieved, the surface temperature and therefore the heat loss can be lowered significantly. Furthermore, the surface absorber requires very high Reynolds numbers to transfer the absorbed energy into the working fluid and avoid overheating of the absorber tube. This demand of pumping power can be reduced significantly using the concept of volumetric absorption.

Flow patterns and heat transfer inside mini twisted oval tubes (TOTs) heated by constant-temperature walls are numerically investigated. Different configurations of tubes are simulated using water as the working fluid with temperature-dependent thermo-physical properties at Reynolds numbers ranging between 500 and 1100. After validating the numerical method with the published correlations and available experimental results, the performance of TOTs is compared to a smooth circular tube. The overall performance of TOTs is evaluated by investigating the thermal-hydraulic performance and the results are analyzed in terms of the field synergy principle and entropy generation. Enhanced heat transfer performance for TOTs is observed at the expense of a higher pressure drop. Additionally, the secondary flow generated by the tube-wall twist is concluded to play a critical role in the augmentation of convective heat transfer, and consequently, better heat transfer performance. It is also observed that the improvement of synergy between velocity and temperature gradient and lower irreversibility cause heat transfer enhancement for TOTs.

The blade tip region encounters high thermal loads because of the hot gas leakage flows, and it must therefore be cooled to ensure a long durability and safe operation. A common way to cool a blade tip is to design serpentine passages with 180° turn under the blade tip-cap inside the turbine blade. Improved internal convective cooling is therefore required to increase blade tip lifetime. Pins, dimples and protrusions are well recognized as effective devices to augment heat transfer in various applications. In this paper, enhanced heat transfer of an internal blade tip-wall has been predicted numerically. The computational models consist of a two-pass channel with 180° turn and arrays of circular pins or hemispherical dimples or protrusions internally mounted on the tip-wall. Inlet Reynolds numbers are ranging from 100,000 to 600,000. The overall performance of the two-pass channels is evaluated. Numerical results show that the heat transfer enhancement of the pinned tip is up to a factor of 3.0 higher than that of a smooth tip while the dimpled-tip and protruded-tip provide about 2.0 times higher heat transfer. These augmentations are achieved at the cost of an increase of pressure drop by less than 10%. By comparing the present cooling concepts with pins, dimples and protrusions, it is shown that the pinned-tip exhibit best performance to improve the blade tip cooling. However, when disregarding the added active area and considering the added mechanical stress, it is suggested that the usage of dimples is more suitable to enhance blade tip cooling, especially at low Reynolds numbers.
